Takashi Miike Tapped For Yakuza Movie - 5.9.06

Yakuza
Let’s face it video game movies haven’t been all that fantastic to date. However, reports about Sega’s planned Yakuza-themed flick might just produce a serious exception to the rule.

The company has reportedly tapped Takashi Miike to head up production. Miike’s movies have included “Ichi the Killer” and “Audition.” Plus, his Showtime Masters of Horror short “Imprint” was so brutal and “disturbing” the cable network banned it from running. It will release straight to DVD instead later this month.

That move earned Showtime the disdain of many horror fans, myself included, but that’s another story.

Miike’s directing is incredible and his tastes are over the top, so there’s no doubt in my mind “Yakuza” the movie will be an absolute roller coaster ride. The only downfall to getting Miike to do the movie is the likelihood major cuts will be necessary for the flick to make it into American theaters. With that in mind, I’ll be waiting for the uncut DVD instead, but I digress.

Topping off the Yakuza-related news, Sega has launched a site to promote a sequel to the PlayStation 2 game. The game will reportedly build on the engine that’s already there. The North American version of the first game releases today. It's rated M, but that shouldn't be a shocker.

The first Yakuza features some big-name celebs doing the voices, including Eliza Dushku and Mark Hamill. All in all, it's looking like Sega might have a winner of a franchise on its hands here.
