As expected, Nintendo’s finally let the cat out of the bag about Wii. The next-gen console will hit the shelves Nov. 19 in North America for a cool $249.99. The Japanese launch takes place Dec. 2 with the console coming in at 25,000 Yen, or about $213 USD. Guess this makes the “code crackers” incorrect, but the news is fantastic nonetheless.
The console will come with a remote strap, the nunchuck attachment, an AC adaptor, an A/V cable, a stand, a sensor bar, a sensor bar stand and two AA batteries.
Proving Nintendo intends to make its console different, there are reports out Wii will not be a movie machine, too. Unlike the Xbox 360 and the PS3, this console won’t play DVDs, high-def, Blu-ray or anything of the sort. The confirmation comes from Nintendo’s VP of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan.
I’m not sure exactly where I stand on this. One part of me really likes the 360’s ability to play DVDs and the idea of the forthcoming HD-DVD drive, but honestly Wii not having the ability isn’t that big of a deal. What it tells me is that Nintendo intends to make this a gaming machine, rather than a do-it-all mechanical disaster a la the PlayStation 3 and its already failed global launch.
In more good Wii news, it looks like Nintendo’s little wonder will release with quite a few good titles. The list includes The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Call of Duty 3 and Wii Sports.
Marrying affordability with a great launch line up, my guess is Wii will be hard to come by during the holiday season.
