Xbox 360Big news about the Xbox 360 has come out of the Tokyo Game Show where Microsoft has announced it will roll out 1080p support with its fall software update. The company has also priced and dated its upcoming HD-DVD player for the Japanese release at least.

The 1080p support means that Xbox 360 fans will be able to enjoy the same high-resolution the PlayStation 3 will tout when it hits the market this November. The software update will automatically enable the 1080p resolution for games and movies. According to Game Daily, this is the highest resolution available today.

In addition to the high-resolution news, Microsoft has put a Nov. 17 date on its HD-DVD player in the Pacific and has given it a 19,000 yen pricing, or about $169. This means the player and the 360 will cost quite a bit less than expected, which might hamper Sony's more costly Blu-ray equipped PS3.

Microsoft is playing up the user choice of the HD-DVD player, as expected. From Peter Moore, “Xbox 360 and the HD DVD player together deliver the most powerful and affordable games and movie system for Japanese consumers. The freedom to choose their entertainment experiences is extremely important for consumers as they enter the next generation."

There’s still no date or price on the HD-DVD player for North America, but that’s expected soon. Guesses have it pricing out around $199.

The 1080p support is good news for 360 fans in that it levels the playing field a bit more between the PS3 and the 360. The versatility of the 360 will appeal to some buyers and the 1080p support is just icing on the cake.
