Despite rumors that just won’t die, Microsoft doesn’t seem to be confirming or denying plans to create a “new-gen” Xbox 360 complete with an internal HD-DVD drive.
This time the rumors are coming from sources in Taiwan, per Digitimes. Previous rumors came from an Austrailian Toshiba rep.
The persistence of the rumors does make one wonder if there is some truth to the idea. Does Microsoft intend to roll out a new version of its 360 complete with the drive in place?
It just might down the road, but right now, that seems a little doubtful. There’s no way Microsoft hasn’t considered this, but doing so right now might actually take away its “flexibility” edge. The PlayStation 3 has its Blu-ray drive intact, but Microsoft’s draw is the fact it can run with an HD-DVD or it can go without. The external drive is almost a stroke of genius since it keeps the console’s overall price lower.
What Microsoft offers currently is a gaming machine for serious gamers that has “a la carte” add ons that can make it a total entertainment powerhouse – just like a PS3. The competitive edge for Microsoft is that gamers can get as much or as little as they want, or can afford, from the 360.
Plus, with all appearances making it look like the 360 and a drive will likely cost less than a fully loaded PS3, why would Microsoft want to fiddle with its formula right now?
For it’s part, Microsoft is only saying it won’t comment on rumors. Only time will tell if there’s really something to this or not.
