If you’re hanging on to an old Nintendo DS rather than coming over to the Lite side, you might want to stock up on accessories that are not interchangeable with the newer, sleeker model.Accessories that are DS-specific are hard to come by, and I do mean hard. This isn’t to say they’re not out there and they’re not being made. What I am saying is that retailers are not keeping them on the shelves for a variety of reasons.
A recent trip to several gaming outlets in the Tampa area - and I do mean several - to find an AC adapter, battery charger for the original DS model turned into what can only be described as a near wild goose chase. Four stores later, we found the necessary adapter, and were told an investment in the new DS Lite might be smart.
It seems even though Nintendo is continuing to support the DS in light of the Lite, retailers aren’t taking up their shelving space with DS-only items. Battery chargers for the DS Lite could be found at every retailer, not so for the regular DS.
It’s not that I can blame retailers either. In nearly every store I visited, spaces were already marked out for where the Wii and the PS3 displays would go. This means gaming store space is at a premium and in many outlets it’s the DS that’s taking the hit over the DS Lite.
I can't say this extends to every market, but I’m willing to venture a guess it does in most retail outlets. Space is always limited and when something new comes in, something old must go.
Fortunately, accessories that are DS specific can still be found online in a fair abundance and they’re still being released anew. That, of course, doesn’t help when you’ve lost your kid’s charger and there’s a game of Nintendogs to be played!
Stock up on those hard to find parts or bookmark online ordering sites. With all the next-gen ruckus going on, those store shelves are bound to get even more cramped.
You’ve been warned.
