While Sony’s licking its wounds, scaling back launch plans and dealing with all kinds of bad PR, Nintendo execs must be whistling a happy tune.Unlike their next-gen competitor, Nintendo, it appears, will not be dealing with production problems on the eve of its official Wii launch.
According to International Business Times, Wii production is well ahead of schedule. In fact, 2 million Wiis are already ready to go and another 7 to 9 million are expected to be built during the fourth quarter of the year, per the report. This puts Nintendo well ahead of its 6-million unit goal.
This could be very good news for gamers who are hoping to pick up a Wii for the holidays. While it’s very likely the console will sell out and be scarce, it’s not looking like Nintendo’s launch will go as bad as Microsoft’s last year or Sony’s upcoming PlayStation 3 scaled-back launch.
In all fairness, Wii isn’t as difficult or costly to produce as the other two consoles. It also doesn’t have the Blu-ray issues of the PS3 or the complexity of either competitor.
The Wii is starting to remind me of the turtle in the race against the hare. Nintendo’s just marching to the beat of its own drum and seems to have put itself on a path to deliver what it says it will, when it says it will.
