There’s no denying that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has the popularity of a slug in Japan. In fact, a slug just might be more popular than the 360.The console’s sales numbers are so awful, it might as well have not been released there. If the next-gen sales battle depended on Japan, Microsoft would need to just pack up and go home.
But, why is this? The 360’s a pretty good gaming console. It has some fantastic titles. So, why isn’t it selling in Japan?
Perhaps it’s all in the marketing? At least that’s the guess the folks over at TechnaBob.com are making, and it’s as good as any. As they point out, the Japanese web site for the 360 is awful and the commercial Microsoft is running is even worse.
The 360 sells in the U.S. because of its power, its hard core appeal and, of course, its gun-shooting Halo action. The web site and the commercial for Japan don’t present the impression of any of the these things.
Why would Microsoft choose to go all bubble gum happy in its Japanese marketing when its strengths lie in elsewhere?
One can only wonder.
