The days of running to the store to get a copy of the Official PlayStation Magazine are over. Sony has decided to end its agreement with Ziff Davies for production of the U.S. publication. The official reason for ending the magazine is the fact there’s now no need to have a mag to deliver demo-discs to players. The birth of the PlayStation Online Network takes away the need.
Peter Dille, a senior VP at Sony, has been quoted as saying “A key element of the OPM magazine was the playable PlayStation disc packed in with every magazine. With the launch of the PLAYSTATION(R)3 (PS3(TM)) computer entertainment system and its full network and Web capabilities, we are focused on delivering content via the PlayStation Network and PlayStation.com website, not discs.
While we have enjoyed a very good run with the printed version of Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, we feel it is important to shift assets online to meet the needs of today's PlayStation consumer. This is a natural evolution of our content delivery strategy."
The move makes sense, especially with how expensive it is to produce a magazine, but I can’t help but feel a little sad. As a print person myself, the death of a magazine, newspaper or anything tangible you can put into readers’ hands is worth mourning. There’s just something neat about being able to pick up a gaming magazine to read about upcoming titles, cheats and so on at my leisure in places away from my computer or gaming systems.
So much for this one.
RIP Official PlayStation Magazine.
