Halo Movie Dead In The Water - 2.11.06

Halo 2After much hype and even greater anticipation, the Peter Jackson-backed Halo movie is officially and indefinitely on hold.

Cinema Blend is reporting the backing out of Fox and Universal because of the dollar amount attached to the film pretty much put the nail in the coffin. Since Microsoft won’t foot the entire $350 million bill, the flick’s dead in the water right now.

I should have seen this one coming a mile away, but I have to admit, I was holding up hope Microsoft would pick up the tab to do it right.

According to the WingNut films media release, “As was previously confirmed, we deeply regret that both Universal and Fox did not choose to move forward with financing the Halo film under the original terms of the agreement. At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with their partner, Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans throughout the world that we would settle for no less than bringing a first class film to the big screen.”

Whether anyone beyond Microsoft would be willing to bring that kind of cash to the table seems questionable at this point. It’s good that the vision isn’t being sacrificed. Still, it’s sad to hear we won’t see the Master Chief himself on the big screen at any time in the near future.
