In what can only be described as a massive string of bad luck and bad planning, Sony has had to announce that its new PlayStation 3 is not totally backwards compatible. That “not totally” includes about 200 titles from the original PlayStation and PS3 that were supposed to run on the PS3 without flaw. Reports, however, have come out of Japan that this isn’t the case. Some titles have features that aren’t working correctly and others just don’t work at all.
According to Reuters, industry analysts are saying these types of “glitches” are expected with console launches and shouldn’t have a lasting impact on the console’s overall sales.
"There are always sorts of little problems at launch ... It may take some time to make everything compatible, but I don't think it's a huge problem," KBC Securities analyst Hiroshi Kamide said.
While it’s true Microsoft has had similar problems with its Xbox 360, I’m not so sure this isn’t a bigger deal than is being made out right now.
Two hundred titles is a lot, and what’s more, one would think after the nightmare launch the Xbox 360 had, Sony would have checked and double checked on its backwards compatibility.
This is just yet another example of Sony not learning from the mistakes of others.
Plus, add to the fact gamers are shelling out a pretty penny for this particular console and you’d think they’d want, even demand, the darn thing works correctly coming out of the gate.
With the U.S. launch just days away, this might not bode well for Sony.
