With about two weeks to go before the official Nov. 17 launch of the PlayStation 3, there’s little doubt gamers are getting anxious for Sony’s own spin on next-gen action.The problem many face, however, is the fact the PS3 will be scarce on the scene through the holidays and perhaps even much longer. Those who really, really want to pay out the cash for a console are finding out pre-orders in many places are already sold out.
Beyond the eBay marketplace, which proved a veritable treasure trove of both legitimate and illegitimate Xbox 360s last year, there will be very few places gamers can turn to get a PS3 unless they’re already on a preorder list.
Enter the scammers.
Sony Computer Entertainment America has issued a warning about a number of Web sites that are taking pre-orders on “discounted” or “bulk shipments” of the PS3. The problem is, these offers are not put on with cooperation from Sony. This means, it’s very likely they’re nothing more than scams.
Reported from Sony’s statement: “SCEA strongly recommends against consumers pursuing such offers, as their legitimacy cannot be confirmed. We recommend consumers purchased PlayStation products only from authorized SCEA retailers and resellers."
Scam offers have not been detected outside of America, but it’s not unlikely they will pop up elsewhere.
I know it’s tempting to be the first person on the block with a PS3 no matter the cost, but be smart and don’t make the investment unless you’re sure. It’s possible you could find yourself a day late and a dollar, or several hundred of them, short.
