The folks at Merrill Lynch are betting on Microsoft and its Xbox 360 to win the next-gen battle with its strong North American following holding up the numbers.According to reports, Merrill Lynch analyst Yoshiyuki Kinoshita has said “the winner in the next-generation console battle is likely to be the Xbox 360, which is the leader in North America, the world’s biggest market.”
Kinoshita went on to say he expects the 360 to have 39 percent of the market share, followed by the PS3 at 34 and Wii at 27 percent.
All of this sounds great on paper, but the fact of the matter is that the PS3 and Wii are not even in the game as of today. They will be soon, but they’re not yet.
Going with the 360 is a fairly safe bet since it’s the middle of the road console pricing wise. And, it’s got Halo and Gears of War. But, there’s always the “universal” appeal Nintendo’s going for with its Wii and then Sony’s powerhouse strategy with the PS3.
It’s honestly my guess Wii will do better than some think because of its pricing and novelty. The console’s simply more attainable for the masses and it’s been designed to be so. The PS3, however, has all kinds of power and Blu-ray to boot. And, then of course, there’s the 360 with Halo and Gears of War. Did I mention Halo and Gears of War?
Seriously, my prediction on who will win the next-gen war?
Since I don’t have a crystal ball, I’ll say what I’ve said before: all gamers. With three awesome consoles soon to be on the market and tons of next-gen titles coming our way, we all win.
Competition is a wonderful thing.
