There are rumors starting to circulate on the Web that Microsoft intends to offer downloadable high-def movies on its Xbox Live Marketplace in the very near future. The rumors have that move dated at Nov. 22.According to the rumors, the movie kick off will come with more than 1,100 hours of video available for rental or straight purchase for those using an Xbox 360 over Xbox Live.
The pricing is a little unclear, as is generally the case with rumors, but if it’s true, it seems on track with other sites. Rented videos will run about $4 each and the purchase rates are expected to range from $10 to $15.
What’s intriguing about this rumor is how it would all shake out. Would Xbox 360 users have to buy an add on HD-DVD player, which is due out later this month, too, to make them work? Or, would the Xbox 360 hooked up to a high-def television do the trick?
The implications are almost mind-boggling either way. If the 360 could play the high-def movies in high-def format without the add on HD-DVD, Microsoft will have in a single swoop made its machine a high-def player for a fraction of the cost of the PS3.
Of course, buyers would be forced to use downloads, but their popularity is greatly on the rise and their prices much lower than HD-DVD, DVD or Blu-Ray buys.
Even if the HD-DVD add on was deemed necessary, the move would still make the format more affordable for buyers. A $15 download is a heck of a lot easier on the wallet than a $25 HD-DVD purchase.
I’ll be keeping my eyes on this one for certain. Most definitely and interesting rumor to say the least.
