Multiverse Network’s announcement that it has gained the rights to create a MMO based on Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” is a fantastic idea, but one whose time may have already passed.Whedon’s “Firefly” was a space-age cowboy show that was cancelled in its prime. A movie continuation, “Serenity,” only created more questions, and fans have been left dying for more.
The idea of delivering more storyline in new packages isn’t unexplored by Whedon, who intends to carry his Buffyverse forward in graphic novel form. But, I have to wonder if the MMO, due out in 2008, will already be past its prime when it hits.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Whedonite and I’ll likely give the game a spin. There’s no doubt the storyline supports a great concept for a MMO. However, my concern lies in the fact the MMO will launch several years after the show and the movie were in their prime.
How many people will be willing to give it a spin?
Corey Bridges, Multiverse’s cofounder and executive producer sounds like he’s banking on fans to make it a success. He's been quoted as saying, "It's our hope that Firefly's passionate and dedicated community of fans will enjoy the chance to become part of the story as they develop and explore the worlds of Firefly."
That’s my hope, too. I’d sure like to see this world live on in one form or another.
