A few days ago, I wrote a piece about a video on YouTube that exposes the backwards compatibility problems the PlayStation 3 is experiencing.“No matter what type of TV you are using … no matter what video cables you use … your PS1 and PS2 games will look like utter shit when played on the PS3,” proclaims the opening sequence of “The truth about PS3 backwards compatibility.”
At the time I wrote this, I had to do so from the perspective of an outsider looking in, since I didn’t have an older game on hand to check out. Now, thanks to some serious digging around in our house, we found a copy of Iron & Blood for the original PlayStation.
Let me tell you, the game never looked all that great before, but on the PS3 it’s doubly awful. Pong, in fact, might look at little better than Iron & Blood did.
Granted, it was very easy to get the game to work. It only took a slight bit of fiddling and the game was fully functional, right down to the irritating opposing fighters’ comments.
In regards to the timing of its launch versus the readiness of its console, the words of Iron & Blood’s Stellerex, the annoying wizard, ring true, “Your first mistake was entering the arena.”
The console is awesome, but there are just too many “little” things with it at this point to make it a serious contender in my mind, and evidentaly the minds of a lot of others based on Wii and 360 sales. Sony might have done itself a whole lot of good in making sure its ducks were in a row before releasing the beast on a market that’s loaded with critics (myself included) and other options.
