Playstation 3
It sat behind the glass windowed-case mocking me. In its shiny, high-tech, super computer glory, there was 60 GB PlayStation 3 just ready to be bought, bagged and drug home.

Even with a PS3 shortage that’s expected to continue into next year, there it was. A brand new PS3 right in a Wal-Mart in Land O’ Lakes, Florida, of all places.

“Scaling issues,” I told myself. “Backwards compatibility problems. Remember the first-gen Xbox 360 fiasco from last year you caught yourself in.”

I managed to make it out of the store without setting $600 plus on the counter.

My husband, however, couldn’t resist the urge. Upon hearing the ever-elusive PS3 was sitting in a case in the Wal-Mart store a few blocks from our house, he grabbed the car keys and headed out to buy the only and last console the store had. (He was told he beat several other people to the punch who had called and were en route.)

Now, about three hours from my first setting eyes on the box, I sit here a lot poorer with a PS3, a single game and a remote controller to call my own. And, I have to admit I’m impressed.

That’s right, I said it. I’m impressed.

Right now we only have Resistance: Fall of Man, but I have to say it looks sweet. The game’s graphics are incredible. It literally looks like you could reach out and get burned on the muzzle flash. The hands on fellow soldiers look so real, it’s almost like watching a movie. Thus far, the game play has been flawless.

Since we don’t have a stockpile of PS1 or PS2 games at hand, I can’t speak to the backwards compatibility issues. Nor have we had a chance to fiddle with the Blu-ray just yet either. There doesn’t seem to be a scaling problem on our TV, but that was also picked up by my techno nut husband, so that really shouldn’t have surprised me too much.

My first impression of the console (based on a single game mind you) is that Sony really is sitting on a gold mine. The graphics do appear better than the Xbox 360, which isn’t an easy task.

I’ll let you know more in-depth impressions after I manage to wrangle the controller away from him and check out the system myself. Based on how that’s looking right now, it will be some time in March.

In the meantime, I’m going to try and figure out how I went from being Mrs. Will Power to Mrs. PS3 owner. If Amazon contacts me as a lucky Wii purchase winner tomorrow, I'm gonna be in trouble!
