The tale of three next-gen consoles is just starting to be told, but November’s sales figures show the battle (for at least right now) is almost strictly a Microsoft/Nintendo thing.According to reports in the New York Sun, Sony unloaded 197,000 PlayStation 3s in November, while Nintendo sold 476,000 Wiis. Microsoft topped the charts with 511,000 Xbox 360s sold.
In all fairness, the figures for the three-way race are very premature and by all accounts, Sony has really had a false start with its PS3. The console is, however, taking a beating right now as production remains a huge issue.
It appears as if Sony’s plans to have 1 million consoles on the North American market by year’s end have also gone in the toilet. “"There's no way that Sony will make its forecast for 1 million units in America this calendar year," said Evan Wilson, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, Ore., who rates Sony shares "sector perform." "They will face supply constraints at least through March."
This is, all and all, not very surprising, but it does make one wonder how well Sony will rebound when the PS3 really does come online. Especially now that buzz about a PS4 is in the air.
