PS3 Smokes 360 In Japan, Wii Wins Overall - 13.12.06

Playstation 3 Even with the cancellation of its worldwide launch, dismal release numbers in North America and problems with backwards compatibility, Sony’s PlayStation 3 is coming out on top in Japan.

According to Xbitlabs, the PS3 has beaten the Xbox 360’s total sales figures in Japan by about 10,000 units. Nintendo’s Wii, however, is winning the overall battle for Japan by a lot, with an estimated 400,000 units in gamers’ hands.

Meanwhile, the UK release of Wii has proven a major success for Nintendo.

According to Spong, the Wii is now the fastest-selling console in UK history, with launch weekend figures topping 100,000 units sold.

Some of the numbers are not very surprising. Japan is Sony’s home turf. That country has been notoriously anti-Microsoft. The PS3 beating the 360 here is like stealing candy from a baby, evening after the 360s year-long lead.

The UK numbers for Wii are interesting, but do make sense considering the Wii’s overall appeal and pricing. That coupled with the anti-Sony sentiment that has been generated since the cancellation of the global launch, and it really isn’t a shocker Wii is doing so well.

What these numbers look like a year from now will be the real test.
