The good news is that Sony has debuted its first set of games on the PlayStation Network. The bad news is the games won’t work on the PlayStation 3, even though you’ll need one to download them. That’s right, in another what the heck are they thinking moment, Sony has released Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 2, Hot Shots Golf 2 and Filter, but you’ll need both a PS3 and a PSP to play them.
The titles cost $5.99 to download and each can be transferred to a PSP using a memory stick. A firmware upgrade is also necessary to get the games to run.
I cannot think of a more boneheaded move for Sony to make in launching games on its new service. They might as well be saying, “Hey, we know you spent $600 on a PS3, but now we want to make sure you run out and give us another $200.” You'd think they would have released at least one title for the PS3, too, but not Sony.
If Sony wants to raise gamers’ confidence in its products, and win over new buyers (when it can get its consoles shipping, of course), this is not the way to do it!
