PS3s, Wiis Scarce Through New Year - 23.12.06

Nintendo Wii
It’s the same tale as last year with next-gen console shortages expected to continue well into the New Year. The only difference was last year’s shortage revolved around a single machine; this year’s involves two.

Both the Wii and the PlayStation 3 are hard to come by and will remain so for quite some time, according to an article on C Net.

Sony shipments by the year’s end are expected to only total between 600,000 to 800,000, despite claims they’ll hit the 1-million mark, said American Technology Research analyst Paul-Jon McNealy.

This, McNealy said, is because many of the consoles will remain in transit, plus there’s the whole European launch to contend with. Considering the PS3 has yet to land in Europe, he expects that console to continue to be quite scarce well into the summer.

Meanwhile, the Wii, he said, will very likely be more available by March.

And, as the Wii and the PS3 are hard to find, it sounds like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 are cleaning up at the stores this holiday season.

All of this isn’t very surprising. The PlayStation 3 has come out of the gate with problems, as Sony failed to learn from the launch lessons of Microsoft’s Xbox 360. The Wii, on the other hand, has been meeting its production targets for the most part, but the demand for the more affordable console is extremely high – lawsuits and all.
