Wii Beats PS3 In Holiday Sales Battle - 26.12.06

Nintendo WiiNintendo’s Wii has been named the winner of holiday sales battle, according to the Times Online.

What would generally be seen as the No. 3 console, has came out of the gate using unusual tactics and they seem to have paid off. The draws for the Wii are the console’s pricing and unique style of game play, including the motion-sensing remote. The strange tactics employed in marketing have included such things as recruiting mothers to help push the console through Tupperware-type parties.

Right now, estimates have the Wii outselling the PS3 by more than two to one. Of course, there simply aren’t as many PS3s on the market right now as there are Wiis.

Analyst Van Baker said the Wii simply has created more excitement and its billing as family friendly isn’t hurting it either.

“My best guess is that Sony has sold 300,000 to 400,000 units. They’ll get about 750,000 units, or a little more.”

He estimates about 2 million Wiis have made their way into consumers’ hands.

“The big challenge for Sony is that PS3s are so hard to get,” said Baker. “To a large degree, many people are buying something else. Sony is going to have to battle to retain the market share that they’ve had historically. They’ve given a two Christmas advantage to Microsoft, and a one Christmas advantage to Nintendo.”

Whether the Wii’s novelty will wear off and Sony will regain the top spot remains to be seen. The PS3 is a great console, but its pricing, availability and current lack of titles are putting a serious beating on its popularity.

Nods to Digital Battle.
