In light of stories about flying controllers, broken television screens and injured dogs, Nintendo has made the decision to recall about 3.2 million Wii straps and replace them with sturdier models.According to a report in Forbes, Nintendo will replace the old straps for ones that have a thicker diameter and will, therefore, resist breaking as gamers battle it out for domination in such games a virtual tennis and bowling.
"People tended to get a bit excited ... and in some cases the control would come loose from their hands," Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa has been quoted as saying. "The new strap will be almost twice as thick."
Straps can be exchanged at local Nintendo service centers. The move will cost Nintendo several million dollars.
Despite the loss in revenue, the move is a smart one on Nintendo’s part. It shows that Nintendo is not out for just itself and that it’s willing to suck up a bit of a loss to make things right with customers.
When it comes to smart PR decision, Nintendo scores well with the recall. It simply shows that Nintendo will fess up to errors, make them right and move on. Other gaming companies could learn a thing or two from this example.
