Xbox 360 Hits 9 Million Mark - 27.12.06

Xbox 360If the next-gen video game console war were decided solely on today’s figures, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 would be the hands down winner, with Nintendo’s Wii coming in second.

Of course, declaring victory based on today’s numbers just wouldn’t be right. Microsoft has had a full year lead in the competition, and Sony has barely made it out of the gate.

According to a piece in Nintendojo, the Xbox 360 has made it to the 9 million mark, while Wii is enjoying nearly 2 million in sales during its short history. Sony trails way behind with an estimated 800,000 consoles sold, which is very likely a generous estimation.

What’s interesting to note in all of this is the fact that Wii’s been on the market now for just over a month and it’s managed to make a real dent in the gap between it and Microsoft’s sales figures, despite the full year lead. Granted, a 7-million unit gap is a big one, but just under 2 million in roughly six weeks is quite impressive indeed, and so too is its lead in holiday sales.

Sony’s figures will likely boost when availability and better game titles aren’t an issue, but whether or not the PS3 can actually close the gap effectively with its pricing remains to be seen.
