The next-gen console war hasn't shaped up like many thought it would. In fact, Sony's PlayStation 3 has barely registered as a blip on the map as of yet and Nintendo's Wii came out of the gate fighting hard.
All of this has Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates making some interesting statements. When it comes to competition on the portable front and for the Xbox 360, Nintendo is the company to watch, he says.
According to Game Spot, Gates has said, "The strength of Nintendo...in the portable space, has been very impressive. [It's] surprised a lot of people, I think, [that] and the Wii. We see Nintendo as our toughest competition."
The interview is available on YouTube.
Some writers are suggesting Gates was speaking only about the Japanese market since the quotes came out of an interview with Tokyo TV. However, given the Wii's impressive sales figures to date and the fact the console is darn near impossible to find despite constant shipments, I'd venture a guess he means overall. This, of course, doesn't mean Gates sees Sony as no competition - just that Nintendo is going to be the hardest to beat.
