Those rumors about IPTV and the Xbox 360 have amounted to quite a bit more than just smoke blowing.Microsoft and Starz Entertainment have officially announced a deal that will provide Vongo, an Internet-based video download service, for users of Windows Vista and the Xbox 360. Vongo will provide movies as part of the deal for subscribers and the Starz TV channel will offer streaming content.
According to a media release, “the new Windows Vista-enabled Vongo service will also take advantage of the Windows Media Center platform to allow users to stream movies and other content via Media Center extenders, such as Xbox 360 consoles, that are connected to the home network. The Xbox 360 will automatically check to see which Windows XP or Vista-based devices are registered on the network and ask the user whether they want to access content, such as their Vongo movies, from that PC. This is a simple and easy approach that solves past problems that required configuration and technical knowledge by the user. The launch of Windows Vista enables a new generation of users to enjoy the ultimate entertainment experience – whether it’s movies, music, games, or the latest TV shows.”
The deal sounds like a pretty good one that will give not only Xbox 360 users, but also Windows users a whole host of easy solutions for watching download, on-demand content on their regular screens. Vongo itself gives users access to more than 1,000 movies and more, plus Starz TV for $9.99 a month. Not a bad deal.
It looks like regular Media Center extenders will work as the link between the computer and the TV if an Xbox 360 isn’t available in a home, too.
