As Sony revels in finally hitting the 1 million unit shipped mark in Japan, two weeks later than it planned, there is some indication as to when the official European launch will take place for the PlayStation 3 console. In a piece on Games Industry, a date of March 23 is pointed to based on retail sources. Whether the date’s accurate or not remains to be seen, but Games Industry tends to be on the mark or darn close to it.
The question now arises as to whether Sony will really be ready to unleash the PS3 on Europe and Australia in just over two months. With only two million units out between North America and Japan, can the company come up with enough consoles to make the launch look respectable? Or, has it alienated Europe so badly that only a modest number of consoles will be necessary?
For Sony’s sake, I hope the launch goes well. The fact PS3s can be found on store shelves in America, sometimes two at a time, isn’t looking good for the console’s popularity and industry analysts are giving the projected sales a serious beating. On the upside, the software sales have hit the 5 million mark and game titles should be getting better soon.
