A Swedish gamer has managed to hack Orb’s streaming software and make his Wii act as a conduit between his iTunes account and a television. The hack is being reported as fairly simple to do and has been embraced by Orb. That company has officially added it to its front page. The hack works courtesy of the Wii's web browsing capabilities.
To make a Wii work in this manner, all a gamer needs to do is download the Orb software to a Windows-based PC and follow the instructions.
Orb is a software package that enables users to MyCast. This means they have instant access to content on their PC from any internet-connected device, such as a mobile phone, PDA, laptop, and now a Wii.
“Using any web browser, Orb provides a simple, intuitive interface for the user to connect to their home computer and the ability to stream digital content located there without the interruption of download delays," proclaims the site. "By removing the complexity and limitations of many of today's digital entertainment products and services, Orb's software architecture leverages the best features of today's popular standards while abiding by current digital rights management solutions.”
Sounds like Wii owners have gotten one heck of a bonus thanks to this nifty little marriage of programs. Now, if I can just find one of these between the PS3s sitting on local store shelves!
