Gearbox have pulled a major surprise and confirmed they have taken over development of Duke Nuke Forever. The vaporware favourite is now expected for release for the PS3, X360 and PC in 2011.

Previously stalled in development hell since 1997, fans hopes for a release were raised and dashed on a regular basis over the intervening 13 years, until original developer 3D Realms announced it was shutting down in 2009.

2K Games continued to hold the rights to the game and Gearbox picked up development duties. The game is currently in the ‘polishing phase’ of development according to Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
