Internet Explorer 9 went live on March 14th, and according to figures released by Microsoft all is going well with browser adoption. In the first 24 hours of its release IE9 has been downloaded 2.3 million times (that’s over 240 downloads every 9 seconds).
We already knew there was interest when we found out the beta and release candidate had a combined download total of 36 million. It seems Microsoft’s attempts to win back market share and make a push-back against Firefox and Chrome may be paying off.
From Microsoft:
We want to thank everyone around the world for downloading IE9 and the enthusiastic reception. 2.3 million downloads in 24 hours is over double the 1 million downloads we saw of the IE9 Beta and four times that of the IE9 RC over the same time period.
Among other things IE9 features an updated javascript engine, hardware acceleration support, a completely overhauled user interface and full support for HTML5. You can grab it now from Microsoft.
