MTV's Choose or Lose campaign to get young people interested in the upcoming U.S. presidential election has enlisted the help of top gaming characters:

SpongeBob SquarePants, Tony Hawk and Lara Croft have taken a break from their respective pursuits of working at the Krusty Krab, skateboarding and kicking butt to make sure you vote in the upcoming presidential election.

Along with the stars of "The Sims," "Mortal Kombat," "BloodRayne," "Sonic Heroes," "SSX 3," "Leisure Suit Larry," "Splinter Cell," "Crash Bandicoot" and many more, the trio are featured in "VG Unity: Stand and Choose," a nonpartisan, animated music video featuring more than 50 video-game characters performing as "VG Unity" to encourage young people to get to the polls on November 2.

Read more on MTV.com

The video will be added to the rotation on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV.com, Spike T.V. and the N.
It can also be viewed on the Choose or Lose PRElection site. (reg req)

DOOM III screenshot

HomeLANFed.com have a chat with Dave Callaham, the scriptwriter for the planned movie based on DOOM 3.
Shooting for the movie is scheduled to start this month, with a release sometime in 2005.

"I never thought of it as a video game movie. I wanted to write first a great movie, then a great science fiction movie and then a video game movie." However, Callaham did say that gamers who know the Doom games will still enjoy it, "I wanted to really make sure that things that are really important to gamers are in the movie," he said. That includes having "…a liberal amount of the monsters” in the film as well weapons like the BFG as its overall horror tone (although the direct references to the monsters coming from Hell in the games are only implied in the film, according to Callaham). "I wanted to write it creepy and dark and gloomy and really depressing at times," he said.

Scrapland screenshot

Gamershell have a demo of this sci-fi action game:

Set inside a debris field thousands of miles wide is the tiny asteroid called Scrapland. Centuries of destructive exploitation by a race long gone, reduced what was once a paradise into a world inhabited only by machines. Those machines, robots of all shapes and sizes, rebuilt Scrapland into an awe-inspiring metropolis of glittering greatness.

As the robots rebuilt the world they also created a new class of citizens: policemen, bankers, priests, and civil servants. This fledgling society was transformed dramatically by a device dubbed "The Great Database". With it the robots could easily revive any expired or nonfunctional automaton. Death became a thing of the past.

Against this backdrop you join the story of an outsider named D-Tritus who arrives at Scrapland amid a string of bizarre murders. D-Tritus lands a job investigating the killings and eventually becomes entangled in a web of conspiracy that only his quick wits and a little help from his friends will save him from.

World Cyber Games

The World Cyber Games competition final launched yesterday, with gamers from around the planet converging on San Francisco to show off their skills, and hopefully win one of the large cash prizes.

The contests start every year with a set of national preliminaries, then a series of national finals, with the winners of those earning a place in the Grand Final.
Check here for a list of participating countries, with links to the sites for each national contest.

The official games chosen are based on various factors such as popularity and gamer opinions - this year there are 6 PC games, and 2 console games:
Counter-Strike: Condition Zero
FIFA Soccer 2004
Need For Speed: Undergound
Starcraft: Broodwar
Unreal Tournament 2004
WarCraft III: Frozen Throne
Halo
Project Gotham Racing 2

The New York Times has an article about a lucky small group of gamers who actually get to make their living at playing games, and will be competing at the contest this year:

Mr. Leto, 20, of Allen, Tex., is no ordinary gamer. He is one of a relative handful of young people who make a living playing video games. Recognized by many as the world's greatest Halo player, he was in Long Beach, Calif., last month at the American finals of the World Cyber Games. He was hoping to qualify for a trip to the world finals this week in San Francisco, aiming to repeat his feat of last year, when he won a top prize of $20,000 in Seoul, South Korea.

Survivor: Reality Gaming screenshot

A game in development by Replay Studios will place players in the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001, the eye of hurricane Andrew in 1999 as well as other real-life disaster scenarios such as Hiroshima in 1945, and the Titanic in 1912.

The game, Survivor: Reality Gaming, has not yet found a publisher, and developers are being sought by Replay to produce it.

The relatively small amount of time that has passed since 11 September will make sure this game is controversial, though a defense for Replay could be argued that the role players take on is always in a rescue situation or surviving.

Criticisms have already appeared on the official Survivor forums.

Space Interceptor: Project Freedom screenshot

Gamershell have a demo of this space-based action game, which is developed by City Interactive and will be released by Merscom later this month:

Blaze through enemy fleets and turrets around massive spaceships, tumbling asteroid fields and snaking planetside canyons. Shadows and lights dance through the galaxy in real-time as your ship darts between guns, missiles and explosions, all of which create their own light source. Your wingmen take care of themselves and will actually assist you in missions, requiring no input. The weapons system -- with Ship-to-Ship missiles, Ship-to-Ground missiles, photon torpedoes, and a plasma glob launcher in addition to the primary lasers, all on the ship simultaneously – is enough to satisfy any gun nut. Particularly entertaining is how every explosion in the game blows up magnificently, with columns of light racing into the sky as energy pierces through spectrums.

Fable screenshot

On the forums of LionHead Studios, Peter Molyneux (LionHead founder & lead game designer) has apologised for features he promised for the recently released Fable that never made it to the finished product:

If I have mentioned any feature in the past which, for whatever reason, didn't make it as I described into Fable, I apologise. Every feature I have ever talked about WAS in development, but not all made it. Often the reason is that the feature did not make sense. For example, three years ago I talked about trees growing as time past. The team did code this but it took so much processor time (15%) that the feature was not worth leaving in. That 15 % was much better spent on effects and combat. So nothing I said was groundless hype, but people expecting specific features which couldn't be included were of course disappointed. If that's you, I apologise. All I can say is that Fable is the best game we could possibly make, and that people really seem to love it.
