A new initiative will outlaw the sale of "gory and sexually explicit software" in Ireland (where three out of four IGNIQ editors live):

[Justice Minister Michael McDowell] is to launch a review of censorship laws within weeks after concerns were raised by parents and campaigners, who said X-rated games are not monitored.
They also claimed that no action is taken against shops which sell 18 certificate software to under-18's.

Doom 3, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Gunslinger Girls 2 and Manhunt are among those facing the axe.

Currently, the law concerning games is The Video Recordings Act 1989; a spokesman for the Dept. of Justice said:

When The Video Recordings Act 1989 was brought in, the games were things like PacMan, which was totally innocent. It's only in the last few years that the games have become more violent.

Filefront have posted a bullet time mod for Half Life 2, allowing you to experience the Max Payne and Matrix effect in hl2.

Here's a tiny simple script for hl2, which makes the game go "bullet-time" when pressing "b" button and while in bullet-time the physics and ragdolls fly a lot further than in normal mode. Due to no physics on bullets except crossbow, grenades, rpg and bugbait, the other weapons' bullets wont slow down.

ValveValve have updated Half-Life 2 to address a sound-stuttering problem in the game:

This update will fix sound stuttering that users were experiencing that would last for longer than a few seconds during normal gameplay. This update will also eliminate this same behavior following a quicksave or autosave. There will still be a short pause while the autosave happens, but not the more drawn out stuttering behavior.

They will also release the Source SDK next week, and a "surprise for the community" is promised.

JFK Reloaded - 22.11.04

JFK ReloadedA new game launched today, the 41st anniversary of president Kennedy's assassination, puts players in the shoes of assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.

The developers of JFK Reloaded have come under criticism from the Kennedy family, but claim that the point of the game is to prove that there was no conspiracy:

"We believe that the only thing we're exploiting is new technology," said Ewing, a former documentary filmmaker and senior executive with Scottish developer VIS, responsible for games like "State of Emergency." He said he sent Edward Kennedy a letter before the game's release.

Ewing said the game was designed to undermine the theory there was some shadowy plot behind the assassination. "We believe passionately there was no conspiracy," he said.

Half-Life 2A poster on Filefront .com claims Valve have leaked a warez copy of Half-Life 2 to the Bit Torrent network, in order to identify the accounts of those who download it:

Recently, one of the HL2Files.com members here, alerted me of a pirated warez version of Half-Life 2, apparently released via the Bittorent network. I immediaely, forwarded this to Gabe Newell of VALVe Software. [The great man, we should all be thanking for Half-Life 2 :)].

A couple of hours later, Gabe replied with the following:

We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off.

So, as you can see, VALVe Software have released a test "warez" version aimed at catching people out. These people will have their accounts deleted and will be banned from Steam.

Therefore, I strongly suggest that you DO NOT participate in these illegal activities as it would only lead to your own harm.

Full post

Note: This claim should probably be taken with a grain of salt as it's only the word of the filefront poster.

House in the Middle

A display at an art exhibit in the U.K. by artist John Paul Bichard features shots taken from Max Payne 2 to create eery prints of an imaginary crime scene:

By transforming the game environment into a ready-made urban studio space, the objects and interiors were altered using the in-game weapons with the gore from dead enemies being used to 'paint' the sets before being unceremoniously blasted out of view and the scene captured.

Check out the gallery here.

Responding to criticism from kotaku, Bichard offered more details about his art:

I don’t just take screenshots randomly – I took a long time to find the right game – rejected Doom 3 – played MP2 3 times through, spent days in developer mode finding the right locations, then it took literally hours to find and create the scenes – many of the screen grabs were discarded.

Halo 2Bungie yesterday released a download to improve & expand the functionality of Halo 2.

The patch will download automatically when you log in to your XBox Live account, and mainly affects these aspects of the game:

Matchmaking: Some players have experienced irritating delays while waiting for a game to be found while in Quickmatch and Optimatch. This is caused by a combination of factors, including connection speed and other detailed nuances of matchmaking. We have isolated the cause and applied a solution to the autoupdate which should normalize that wait time.

480p Support: The autoupdate will improve support for 480p resolutions on a wide range of HDTV and EDTV displays, correcting a flaw that the software encountered with some sets causing part of the HUD to be obscured. This problem does not currently occur on all HDTV sets, so it is possible that your specific set is unaffected right now and it will therefore not be altered or changed by this autoupdate. If you are seeing the HUD clip or bleed off the screen in 480p widescreen and 4:3 modes) this should address that problem perfectly.

Foundation: As something of a treat for players, we’ve decided to make the unlockable multiplayer map, Foundation, available to everyone. Previously, to unlock Foundation, it was necessary to both complete the game and activate a “training event” on the final level. We reckon that was too tough for most, and wanted very much to share Foundation – inspired by our old shoot ‘em up Marathon – with Halo 2 players everywhere. Once you have the autoupdate, you’ll be able to play this rarely seen arena map with anyone you wish. And be sure to try a game of four-team CTF on this map. It's a hoot!

Half-Life 2

IGNIQ members have started posting their initial thoughts about Half-Life 2:

Reality Is False:

this is the one game game that has met and surpassed all my expectations. There is not much that you can say about the gfx. The sound fx and voice acting are second to none. The atmosphere this game generates is beyond anything else.

Dave:

first impressions have been poor for me. loaded up the game i beat flea by all of 10 secs bitch. it then ccrashed when getting off the rail. ive managed to get it to work my specs are alright i do need the extra 512mb ram but

3200xp
512mb
9800 pro

and on source i get 95fps average and same settings as hl2 and it laggs like hell
veru buggy and disappointed.

Gary:

I'm getting unplayable lag and skipping audio at 1024 x 768 res, every setting on high and no aa or af. My spces 3.4 Pentium 4, 512 Mb ddr 400, Nvidia 6800 Gt 256 Mb, Audigy 2. I'm also gettting graphical distortion on a few objects.

I'm SOOOO dissapointed do far, to think that with the gfx card i have it is unplayable at those settings. I have to believe i'm not the only one experiencing these problems.

P.T. Flea:

The game is difficult to get used to...but once you play it for a bit, you get really immersed in it. Within the first half hour of playing my pulse was quickening when I was running from some (combine?) police officers, really pretty neat. I didn't realize how immersed I was until today though, because I was trying to get used to it all.

I think once the bugs are fixed for you guys you'll really get to like it. It definately looks and feels like it has great potential. As stated by gamespot, nothing revolutionary graphically or anything, but it's a good game.

This page will be updated as more opinions are posted, for more info see the main thread here.

Star WarsIn a Q&A with LucasArts president Jim Ward, it's revealed that a real time strategy game is in the pipeline:

As a result, we will have new live-action and animated TV shows over the next few years, and I think there's a bright future there for games based on these new properties as well as original "Star Wars" games like a new real-time strategy PC game that Petroglyph is developing for next year. This game will take the (real-time strategy) genre in a new direction and will balance gameplay between the hard-core gamers who buy these games and the broader audience that's familiar with the "Star Wars" brand.

The release date was greeted with scepticism when it was announced in late October, since there seemed to be much bugs in the beta, along with the closeness to the release of its main competition, World of Warcraft.

dek in his preview on IGNIQ said:

[...]this game is one month from its expected release date and if it ships now with such huge bugs in stability, combat, healing, encounters, and quest it will flop miserably even though its still much better in beta then SWG is now.

Armies of Exigo

EA have released a new Q&A for Armies of Exigo, the fantasy real-time strategy game, due for release on 30 Nov.

Tell us about the world of Exigo, where the game is set?
The story starts in the land of Noran. It is a region that has seen much conflict over the centuries. It is an area known for its magical forests and peaceful farming communities. The western mountains protect these lands from the Howling Plains; known home to the Beast race. One of the big secrets/rumors of these lands is the intricate catacomb and cave systems below the ground. Few have entered these areas but the future prospects of war force the exploration of these areas.

Can you explain the differences between the three armies: the Empire, the
Beast and the Fallen?

The Empire is comprised of Humans and their fellow elves and gnomes. They
are basically very strong on defense and have heavily fortified structures. They are big on spells. They have partnered with gnomes, who have technology to build great siege weapons and vehicles. The gnomes also bring the miner units to the faction, which are critical for transporting units from one level to another. Finally, the human units level up individually and when they reach a higher level, they are able to cast their power to surrounding units. The Beast units are tribal and nomadic. They are comprised of strong individual units like the Ogres and Trolls. They are spiritual and use the energy within the souls of creatures to protect themselves. They have the ability to cast spells like a gas form which allows the units to penetrate through the two levels of the game. Healing is completed through the sacrifice of other units. The Fallen is a bunch of creatures from another dimension who take control of fellow creatures from the underground. Their ally is the dark elves who come to join their cause. They level up as a group taking every killed enemies soul and placing it into a spirit “pool”. Their means of multi-level transfer occur by way of a dimension gate. As long as they stand on their “home turf” or creep, they will be able to self heal themselves.

How is the single player game structured?
It’s a linear game comprised of three campaigns. Starting with the Empire,
continuing with the Fallen, and wrapping up with the Beast campaign. There are 12 missions per race for a total of 36. The story is laid out so that in the end, two forces who are long time rivals actually join together for an epic battle against the Fallen.

Does Armies of Exigo feature tutorials?
Yes. There is a level that covers the basic controls for an RTS. It covers some of
the new additions to the RTS genre like multi level movement. However, the way the game unfolds, you are always acquiring new units with new abilities. We believe this keeps the game fresh and interesting.

What type of units can the player control?
Ground units that are made up of both melee and ranged attack abilities. The
user will control aerial units that both attack and transport other units. There are units that are spell casters with a variety of different abilities (including autocasting of certain spells). Finally, there are units that carry special abilities to interact between the two levels. Some can cast poison fog to the surface from the underground for example.

Does Armies of Exigo feature online and multiplayer modes?
Armies of Exigo contains an extensive multiplayer experience. The user will be
able to host a 12 player game. We also have a variety of different game modes like capture the flag, king of the hill, team melee and a few other surprises. Of course we cover the basics like internet and LAN play. The final product will contain over 40 multi-player maps. If that isn’t good enough, the product will also launch with a game editor so that users can create and customize their own maps.

Beginners Guide to RYL
Because it's currently in beta test, RYL doesn’t supply or have a beginners guide. Their help menu doesn’t work either so here are some beginning tips on how to play the game.

This guide will be aimed towards the human race as I have never played as the demon race.

Controls
  • Forward=w
  • Backwards=s
  • Strafe left=a
  • Strafe right=d
  • Jump=space
  • Sit down/restore=c
  • Zoom in/out=mouse wheel
  • Pick up=e
  • Secondary Weapon=q
  • Attack=Left Click
  • Special Skills=Right Click
  • Shift=Activates other menus
  • Backdrop mode=ESC
  • Party Window=Y
  • Stats Window=U
  • Inventory=I
  • Skill Window=K
  • Game Options=F11
  • Party Chat=/p
  • Whisper=/s [Name] [Message]
  • Shout/Announce=/c [Message]
  • Toggle Run=R
Available Classes:

Warrior
Defender-A defence fighter which uses his/her hit points at a major advantage.

Warrior-An Attacking style fighter which uses his/her strength at advantage

Rogue
Archer-A long range style fighter, which uses his/her speed and distance to defeat enemies

Assassin- A stealthy fighter uses his/her speed and deadly skills to kill and hide as quickly as possible.

Mage
Sorcerer- A magic user type fighter which uses his/her strong magic skills at advantage

An Enchanter- A supportive magic user which uses his/her distance skills ad support skills to help out others

Acolytes
Priest- A holy fighter which uses his/her high magic resistance and good fighting skills

Cleric- Another holy fighter which uses his/her supportive skills to aid the team
Now when you load up the game for the first time you will select on what you want you character to look like, his/her name and select 5 stats points. DO NOT CHOOSE ANY STATS UNTIL YOU HAVE DECIDED YOUR CLASS!

What ever class you choose, you get skills designed for that class. It’s best to use your stats and skills together carefully so you get the best out of both. So you don’t want loads of skills as many will not be useful to your character stat point type. Most skills you want are around about 4. Sorcerers may need 5 for their protection though. Make sure you read each skill and see what it needs to level up. If it’s not a main stat then don’t bother as it will be weak.

Every 2 bonus points you receive per level, will only notch one stat if it’s a main one, which you should do every time, so make sure you don’t waste points into something you don’t need. If you do there are certain things called stone of obivilions, they are kind of rare to find and if you want to buy one of someone it will cost in the region of 250k-300, then you have to pay 10k per level you are and you get to move 4 stat points, very expensive if you have done some stats wrong.

To start yourself off in the game, go visit the 2 people with highlighted name in Aldia harbour, which is Akkard and a guide, they have some simple quests which you can level up from. Make sure you get your quick slot out and drag your skills into it. Anyone highlighted green will have a quest for you, whether your high enough level is a different matter.

When you reach level 10 make sure you visit your trainer for some gear. Then the journey is for you to explore GOOD LUCK!

EXP and Drops
You get exp for completing quests and defeat your enemies, the harder the enemies the more exp you get. If the enemy is a higher level then all of your team mates, the more of you there that are lower then the enemies’ level, the more exp you shall receive. But there is a disadvantage if the enemy is a lower level, or similar level to you and your party members the exp will be shared for what your level of character is and will be less as well. You get drops of most enemies of certain items, the harder the enemy you fight, the better the drops, it may take you longer and get you less exp overall in that amount of time it takes you, but the drop rate is very much increased.
Also on a note as a sorcerer if they group the amount of enemies, your drop rate also increases, whilst they can use their magic to hit around 5 enemies at a time, which gets killer exp and drops and that’s why their books are very expensive.

Bartering
Another very important thing to this game. You find something that has no use to you, maybe someone else needs it. But if you wish to sell in a store you get poor cash for, but you can up the value of what you can sell in the store for, to get that extra bit of cash. Maybe you find something rare where you can only find and not buy like level 3 books or a gem. You are able to up the value straight away. If it's not too ridiculous I'm sure someone will buy.

How to receive fame
To receive fame you have to kill Ak Kan’s aka demons. You will find them on Scynca Island, Caervan or the Isle of Pain. You can be in a party or solo, and kill demons to get fame. If they are too low a level you wont receive anything, or if their too high a level you wont lose any either.
1 Bar = 2000>1, 2 Bars = 10,000>2000, 3 Bars = 20,000>10,000

To create a guild
Go to the guild personal in any city, you have to pay 1 million gold to open an account, and have 4 personnel in your guild within 24hrs.
If you wish to have a symbol/crest you have to pay 5 million gold, and it will cost 5 million each time you wish to change it.
Also if you want more members you have to receive fame, which will be done on an average of the amount of people in the guild.

Blacksmith
You are able to upgrade your armour and weapons at the blacksmith. The only armour that cannot be upgraded is your helmet or hood etc. You can upgrade armour with silvin, mithril, iternum. Silvin is the lowest quality and is most likely to fail, so you use that on the worst things, mithril is medium quality and iternum is the best. All can fail and if you fail once it takes you down to + 0 againL. Silvin and mithril does + 3 whilst iternum does + 6. You first upgrade does the weapon, armour or shield increased, the 2nd does another slot, the third does another upgrade whilst the next does a slot and so forth.

Silvin sells between 30-50k, Mithril sells between 70-100k, and Iternum sells between 200-300k.

Be wary of files named Half-Life 2 unlocker, hl2unlock.exe or rft-hl2u

When run, the program asks for the user's Steam login details and password. "Fair enough," you think. "I'll soon be playing Half-Life 2 before my friends."

Except you won't. Idiot. Because you've just downloaded a Trojan. The program will not unlock Half-Life 2; instead your Steam login details will be sent to the hacker who created the file.

The ATI Radeon 9800 pro is known for being the best buy for performance for many months now. It is a very cheap GFX card which only has a decrease of 5% of the top end cards costing double its value. (Not including AA)
The problem is ATI have fitted it with a very poor fan and heatsink, so not very good OC or it may get too hot.

The cooler I have chosen is very well known for great performance and low noise. It is also cheap, so great for people who don't want to splash out a lot. ME! :)

The VGA Silencer Rev 3
Noise level
Standard ATI Pro 100%
VGA Silencer High Speed Mode 100%
VGA Silencer Low Speed Mode 50%

So this cooler can also be quieter as well as cooler.

Cooling Performance
Standard ATI Pro 79.6 C
VGA Silencer High Speed Mode 47.1 C
VGA Silencer Low Speed Mode 58.0 C

So it is nearly twice as cool as the standard fan on fast speed mode and at the same noise.
Note: These are estimates from artic-cooler, none are dealt by IGNIQ!

Now, before you wish to go purchase one of these, you have to remember your warranty will now be invalid, due to you modified it. So it's at your own risk. And IGNIQ are not responsible for your actions!

Installation Guide

First off you have to unconnect the plug from the front which is the fan connected to the GFX card itself, it should be located close to the heatsink.
Then turn the GFX card over and you will see two barbs at a 30-45 degrees angle from each other. You will need to squeeze these with some small pliers in which you make them smaller to fit through their holes. Then gently pull the heatsink off when the barbs are either pushed through or loose. Be gentle and dont force it!
If the heatsink does not come off, get a hairdryer and heat the heatsink to 50-60 C for removal.

Once you have removed the heatsink you will see some paste residue. You can remove this by either using a thin razor blade carefully, or your nail and paper. (NO CLOTH'S OR TISSUES)
You will now need to apply new paste!

The paste I used was Artic Silver 5. This is the best NON-Epoxy, paste available it can be quite expensive but I had some spare. This is usually used on OC CPU's. It will decrease the temperatures down more than standard paste.

After it is reasonable clean and the old paste residue isn't there, apply a new thin coat of paste either using a thin razor blade or just use the tube end.

Then after that is done. Attach the new VGA Silencer Plug to the correct plug on the GFX Card.

Then turn the GFX Card around. The heatsink will face surface down. Now you must match up the two threads of the heatsink and the GFX Card.
Then you get the blue clip and screw each screw alternatively so it doesn't get too tight, and so the positioning and balance will always be there.

Now you should have a new Modded GFX Card.

The problem with having a larger cooling system you will need the AGP slot to be quite spread open, not too close to the cpu or the PCI slots. If it is then move the certain component from its PCI slot to another.
Also as you can see there is another bracket attached to the VGA Silencer as it toggles the speed at supports the weight of the card so 2 PCI slots will need to be opened.

Now you have something to be proud of and it looks great and is very cool. Now this card can be softmod or OC to reach XT speeds!

Comparison

As you can see and quite obviously it's easy to understand why the standard ATI cooler is not sufficent, and that this VGA Silencer is twice the size at least in width and length.

With Intel's latest offering of the Pentium 4 3.46 Ghz (Extreme Edition) and AMD's Fx 55, gamers are wondering which is the true winner when it comes down to system hungry 3d graphics rendering.
