Still Life screenshot

A demo is available for Still Life, a 3D horror/adventure game that puts players in the shoes of F.B.I. agent Victoria McPherson; her current assignment is to track down a serial killer who has already claimed five victims.

In order to take a break from it all, she decides to visit her father in the suburbs. Since it's close to the Christmas holidays, she and her father talk about their family, including Victoria's grandfather, who used to be a private investigator. This discussion leads Victoria to read one of her grandfather's old case files, a file which reveals an uncomfortably high number of similarities between a seventy-five year old case in Europe and the current string of killings in Chicago...

The game is expected for release on PC and XBox later this year.

Warcraft III: Frozen ThroneChris points to a recently released major patch for Warcraft III : Frozen Throne.

If you're still playing Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne in mulitplayer (like me), you'll be interested to learn that Blizzard has now relaesed a new patch version 1.18. The patch includes:

  • Six new maps from our Bonus Map program, including Excavation Site (4 players), Echo Isle ( 2 ), Hinterland Raid ( 6 ), Ruins of Stratholme ( 6 ), Azeroth Grand Prix ( 8 ), and Extreme Candy Wars 2004 ( 8 ). The six-player map, River of Souls, has also been updated to allow AMM play.
  • Balance changes, including reduced build time for the Undead Banshee, increased gold cost for the Staff of Teleportation, and changes to the abilities of several neutral Heroes.
  • New environment and floating text functions for the world editor, as well as new triggers and unit states.
  • Numerous fixes to units and abilities for all four races.
There's also a smaller Reign of Chaos patch available.

Version 7 of the popular mod for Half Life 2 has been released. This mod lets users mess and play around with the physics of Half Life 2. It installs into your Steam directory. When you run it you are presented with a kind of open arena where you can spawn just about anything you can think of from the game and mess around with the different facial expressions, alter vehicle engines and generally run-a-muck with the great technology behind Half Life 2.

Changes in version 7a include:

- Added material changer
- Fixed sprites preventing saved games from working
- Made balloons use a shiny material
- Fixed black FATCAN being offset from the object you attach it to
- Made tincan thrusters solid so you can remove them individually
- Fixed lamps losing their beam after saveload
- Now saves static/prop camera properly
- Fixed spawning in CS maps
- Moved manhack spawner to the multigun
- Restored original pistol
- Moved render target camera positioner to multigun
- Restored original 357
- Updated map (Terrain doesn't look like Barry Manilow's face anymore)
- Fixed problems caused by latest steam update (My fault - not theirs)

"Task.Force is a tactical teamplay-oriented Half-Life 1 Modification which offers the player realistic environments, tactical equipment and the standard-weapons of actual anti-terror units around the world. That realism is not only produced by the damage and weapon system and authenthic missions, also by the high-detailed and affectionately developed models and levels. All that is supposed to give the player the opportunity to believe that he is actually in one of the warzones of the world fighting global terrorism."

"HL²:SUBSTANCE is a single player campaign remix, developed for those HL² veterans who found the original game either too short or easy, and now ask for more. The levels contain now much more action and challenges - shortly, no one plays as before. The difficulty is higher and requires Nova Prospekt-like skills since the very start. You'll never fight alone, otherwise in the neverending battle that'll enrage on your screen you'd be in real trouble: keep your rebel/alien friends closer than ever. Gore is also maxed to satisfy your bloodlust."

Firingsquad have managed to get a sneak preview of ATI's next generation graphics card technology at a recent Gaming Festival in Dallas, Texas.

Unfortunately, here comes the tricky part. While ATI has now officially demonstrated their 512MB technology, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to go out and buy a 512MB X850 XT tomorrow. As of right now, ATI has no official plans to introduce a 512MB card to the public.

Recently, GamersHell op-ed writer Shaun McCormack tried to secure an email interview with lawyer Jack Thompson - Thompson is currently suing four major companies for making the games Grand Theft Auto III and GTA: Vice City available to minors, which he claims drove then-underage client Devin Thompson to murder two police officers and a dispatcher.

Thompson sees video games as 'literally "murder simulators" teaching our kids how to kill'; McCormack's questions challenged his positions somewhat, and he replied with obnoxious non-answers:

McCormack: Jack, I'm working on an article about video game violence. I've read alot about your crusades against video games and the Devin Thompson trial and wanted to get you to clarify your position for me. With Thompson, do you believe that he would not have committed these murders had he not played these games? Is there a law in Alabamma that forbids retailers from selling M-rated games to minors? Do you have as much of a problem with less realistic violence, like with games from the 1980s?

What about Dungeons and Dragons, which was demonized in the 80s and blamed for several youth murders and suicides? What about violent sports game simulations; hockey, football, boxing, wrestling? How much consideration do you give to the idea that the responsibility for shielding kids from violence should lie with the parents instead of game developers or retailers? I need to get this story in over the next few days, so please email me back soon. Feel free to call me at 201-239-0449 if you need more details. Thanks,Shaun McCormack

Thompson: kiss the game industry good-bye

[...]

McCormack: why do you have a web site urging people to contact you if you don't want to talk about this stuff?

Thompson: read again whom I want to have contact me. have the games so disabled your frontal lobes that you can't understand the site?

Read on | McCormack's GamersHell Article

This isn't the first time Thompson has replied in that way to an interview request - back in November, kotaku.com had a similar exhange with him.

XBoxHironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the hugely successful Final Fantasy series of games, has joined with Microsoft to develop two new role playing games for the XBox 2, rumoured for release this Autumn:

"I'm excited about the two epic game titles we will be developing," Sakaguchi said. "A number of talented creators have signed on to help develop these games, and I'm confident we will be able to create games that provide gamers with a new kind of thrill.

"Microsoft's cutting-edge tehnologies in the next-generation platform will allow me to bring to life an array of ideas that I have had for many years," Sakaguchi said. "I want these games to be alive with a new vision for gaming and vividly depict new characters that will transcend the game, find a place in the hearts of gamers, and make time spent with my games a fond and long-lasting memory."
