Nintendo ONMake of this what you will, a professional looking presentational video supposedly introducing the Nintendo Revolution that I picked up through a random wander on the web.

It's branded as the Nintendo "ON" and it's anything but sleek, totally contradicting the official word from Nintendo yesterday that the Revolution would be about as tall as three stacked DVD cases.

If this video is to be believed, the Revolution will be dome shaped and have a skinnable chassis, with a removable headset that slots down over the machine containing a mic, an "environment capture eye" and a "proximity radar eye", surround headphones, and adjustable visors.

PlayStation PortableSony have released a compulsory patch for older versions of the Japanese PSP, closing a security flaw that allowed the running of unofficial software - i.e. any software not digitally signed by Sony itself.

The difference after the patch is applied won't be noticable by the majority of PSP owners, but it will help to prevent hackers from figuring out how to run illegal copies of PSP games that have appeared on the Internet:

Basically, [the flaw] leaves the PSP wide open to run bootlegs and possibly pirated games. An emulator for running Game Boy and Game Boy Color games on PSP has already been converted to run on unprotected PSP hardware, and while coders have so far not been able to figure out how to run stolen PSP games, the encryption flaw could be used to run the illegal rips of PSP games already posted on international pirate sites.

The SopranosGiven the upcoming game adaptations of gangster classics like Scarface and The Godfather, it was probably only a matter of time before a game based on The Sopranos was announced.

Now a Banc of America analyst has spilled the beans that publisher THQ are indeed working on one, and it's expected for release in the first half of 2006.
Though, THQ themselves dismissed the analyst's report as "speculation":

THQ described the report as "speculation," but when asked if an announcement was forthcoming spokesperson Julie MacMedan declined to comment.

If you think about it, The Sopranos are tailor made for a video game, given the success of "Grand Theft Auto" and its knock-offs. And the gangster theme is red-hot these days with publishers. Electronic Arts will publish an adaptation of "The Godfather" this fall, featuring the voice work and images of Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall and James Caan.

Nintendo Revolution mockup
Mock-up of the Nintendo Revolution
A New York Times article mainly about the XBox 360 sheds a little more light on the competing Nintendo Revolution, namely that it will be backwards compatible with the GameCube, and that it will be super-sleek - only about one inch tall in an attempt by Nintendo to shed the just-for-kids image of its consoles:

Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's vice president for corporate affairs, said GameCube's successor would be "very, very sleek." She described it as horizontal and no taller than a stack of three DVD cases.

Unlike GameCube, the new system will play DVD's, Ms. Kaplin said, and will feature a wireless controller. It will play GameCube games as well as a new class of high-definition games, with new emphasis on online play.

Final Fantasy VII - Dirge of CerberusThe latest issue of Shonen Jump gaming magazine has revealed the Final Fantasy VII spin-off Dirge of Cerberus will be a "Gun Action RPG".

The only previous information available was that it would be a PS2 game centered around Vincent Valentine, a secondary character in the original game, and reports on a brief trailer at last year's Tokyo Game Show hinted it would be an action game:

The magazine shows screenshots of Vincent in action from a third-person perspective, but there's also screenshots of a first-person perspective with a sniper rifle.

Dirge of Cerberus to be shooter RPG

A Japanese language teaser website was also recently launched.

Yet more information is due to be released when Square Enix display their new games at the E3 Expo next week.

XBox360.com

The official site for the XBox 360 launched last night after the MTV Special aired. There's not much on it at the moment except some rotatable images of the console and controller which admittedly look great, and an information section that reveals the PC desktop wallpaper above.

Your guess is as good as mine as to what the significance of the image is, I'm thinking it might be the start of another viral marketing game like OurColony.net.
If you have other ideas about it, post them in the Discussion link below.

Also worth doing is signing up to the XBox 360 mailing list, though you'll have to jump through a few hoops like signing into Passport and filling out a marketing questionnaire.

Xbox 360After months of speculation, rumour, hype and intrigue, Microsoft has finally unveiled its next-generation gaming machine in the form of the Xbox 360. Lord of the Ring's star Elijah Wood hosted an MTV exclusive that finally gave us more than just a glimpse at the little White (or "Chill") gaming monster.

Slated for a holiday release throughout North America, Europe and Japan, the console is designed for high-definition, wide-screen televisions and includes wireless controllers that not only grant you access to your games but also open the door to your music, photos, videos etc.

Technical specifications also boast three IBM PowerPC processors each at 3.2 GHz, 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM @ 700 MHz, 10MB 500 MHz ATI graphics card, with high-definition out of the box.

Xbox live will continue but with some nice new features, like the ability to download game demos, trailers, new levels, maps, skins and other items.

Basics aside, the system announcement saw Microsoft confirming the rumors of Gold and Silver Xbox Live. The Gold version will include video messaging, online tournaments and ladders, playing celebrities and sponsored tournaments, and the Xbox Live Camera. Those new to the service will see a month of free subscription. All this comes on top of word that the system will feature build-in progressive scan, DVD, CD and photo playback support, built in Media Center Extender functionality for accessing recorded TV and movies. The extremely long press release above has more on the system. But alternatively, the newly launched Xbox 360 website has more information.

You can also customize the Xbox 360 to the max. The message from most of the marketing videos put out by Microsoft is that they simply kick-started the Xbox 360 but it is you who make it come alive. It's kind of cheesy, but you can purchase custom front chassis covers to make your console unique in the face of others. Check out this video which talks you through some of the other hardware features of the next-gen console.

Xbox 360 marks the beginning of a renaissance in video games," said Don Mattrick, president of Worldwide Studios for Electronic Arts. "The unbelievable Xbox 360 games in development at Electronic Arts will accelerate the industry's mission to make video games the pre-eminent form of all entertainment.

With Xbox 360, a new chapter in video game history is being written," said Kathy Vrabeck, president of Activision Publishing. "The platform liberates us to achieve new levels of graphics and gameplay so our audiences connect emotionally with more riveting stories, more believable characters and more open, living worlds.

Rise of Legends

Microsoft and developer Big Huge Games disclosed that they are working on Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends, the inofficial sequel to the award-winning strategy game Rise of Nations. Inofficial because Big Huge wanted to give the franchise a new impetus, making Rise of Legends not another history game but setting it in a fantasy universe where two nations wage war against each other. Each nation will have different abilities, of course, with the Vinci being a technology and the Alim a magic nation. At the game's official website, you can view several screens and wallpapers, download a sneak preview, and read what Big Huge president and industry veteran Brian Reynolds (Alpha Centauri, Civilization II) has to say on Rise of Legends:

So, you may have noticed we didn't do a history game this time! RoN: Rise of Legends is in so many ways the spiritual successor to Rise of Nations, but the long and the short of it is we got excited about doing a fantasy game. Now clearly your traditional "orcs, elves, dwarves" sort of fantasy has been-shall we say-thoroughly covered in other games, and so the story which got us excited is one where the magic of fantasy meets a world of technology. So magic and technology collide, with cataclysmic results! As you take a peek at our first two unique nations you can begin to see the contrast: the industrial Vinci with their Leonardo da Vinci inspired machines and steampunk cities; and the desert Alim with their Arabian Nights theme-sandstorms, genies, and tall glass spires. "Cataclysmic" is also a useful word to describe what we want to do visually-we've redesigned our graphics engine from the ground up because we want to make a game that gets our players as excited about our graphics as they have always been about our gameplay.

The game is scheduled for a release in early 2006.

The fact that the game will see players get to play through the events of the movie trilogy as Neo is almost certain to ensure hit status:

Throughout the game, the path the player takes to resolve each scenario and the resulting consequences will be scripted and directed by the Wachowski Brothers. Gaming Granny
A plucky London tube traveller captured this pick of an elderly woman engrossed in some handheld gaming madness. The pic was caught via a phonecam.

So nice to see the spirit of the gaming world living well into the (dare I say) 80+ demographic.

Play on Granny, play on.

I was strap-hanging over this lady on the London tube's central line a while back. It's a phonecam snap, so forgive the blur and photo quality. She was playing a hardwired (you know, where the actual artifact is designed around the game itself, with the game name printed on it. What are they called?) game of some parlour variety, like .. uh.. Cribbage.

NvidiaAccording to motherboard makers in Taiwan, Nvidia are preparing to showcase their next-generation flagship GPU, the SLI-supporting G70 graphics chip, at the Computex Taipei 2005 show from May 31 to June 4.

Market sources indicated that the Nvidia G70 should deliver twice the performance of the current flagship series, the GeForce 6800. The chips will be built using a 0.11-micron process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), as opposed to ATI’s R520 chip, which will be manufactured using a 90nm process, the sources suggested.

Early reports are that the G70 may begin shipping in the latter half of the third quarter of 2005 and retail at US$549.

Since the G70 is currently under non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Nvidia, motherboard makers declined to provide more details about the product. Nvidia also had no comment on the news as it is its policy not to comment on products not yet released.

Pac Man
Pac Man just recently celebrated his 25th anniversary in the gaming industry. Hard to believe it but the game itself is nearly as old as myself. Many an afternoon was spent by many a gaming fan munching power pills and running like hell from those flashing dots that represented your enemy.

According to video-game organization Twin Galaxies, Pac Man has been played on arcade machines more than 10 billion times in the 20th century.

Pac Man changed the psychological profile of the average person," explains Twin Galaxies' founder Walter Day. "Suddenly old and young, male and female, doctors, dentists, lawyers and housewives found it acceptable to be playing a video game. And Pac Man opened that door for them. Despite the fact that it was technologically advanced, it was as simple as playing a card game for them.

The little yellow hero has been a profitable endeavour over the last quarter century and Namco plan on seeing that trend continue with 4 more Pac Man titles announced for next-gen arcade machines.

Namco are keen to release another four Pac Man games in the near future, with a PSP version waiting to be announced. "I think there's a high nostalgia value with Pac Man -- a lot more so than many classic characters," said Sean Mylett, senior marketing manager for Namco. "I think Pac Man is a game where people really remember being younger and pumping quarters and quarters into machines. ... Then there's another level with the 'Pac Man World 3' character. He's an E-rated character. He's very colorful, very safe. It's definitely different than the trends going on in games. He just has an appeal." And while more then a few of the attempts to repeat the phenomenal success of Pac Man in the early eighties have been less than triumphant, a character this well-loved and recognized is sure to live on for many more years to come.Happy Birthday Pac Man.

Taxi DriverIn commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the classic movie Taxi Driver, Majesco Entertainment has announced plans they are working on a video game to pay tribute to Martin Scorsese's masterpiece film from 1976.

While current news on the highly anticipated Call of Duty 2 are rare, a new screenshot has been published by Call of Duty Files. The screen shows American soldiers patrolling through a deserted desert city on top of a tank. If the gameplay is up to game's graphical quality, then we will be in for a promising sequel.

XBox 360According to an article on VideoBusiness.com, Microsoft is expected to announce this week that HD (high-density) DVD will be a non-exclusive component of the XBox 360.

Toshiba also announced an increase in storage capacity for the HD DVD, bringing it up to 45 GB total storage for a single-sided triple-layer disc, and a double-sided "hybrid" was also announced that will be able to store 60 GB high-definition on one dual-layer side and 8.5 GB standard definition on the other.

This will puncture the tires of the PlayStation 3 slightly; Sony have gone with the rival Blu-ray format for the PS3, which has a capacity of 50 GB for a dual-layer disc.

Nintendo Revolution mockupEngadget unearthed an otherwise dull quarterly conference call by RAM company MoSys (MoSys will be supplying their products to NEC Technologies, who will provide the Revolution's RAM), that reveals this statement:

During the quarter we now expect NEC technologies will now use our 1T-SRAM embedded memory technologies on their advanced 90 nanometer process, and that the initial designs to be incorporated in SoC's will be used in Nintendo's next-generation game console, code-named Revolution.

We're excited to be a participating member of the Nintendo team once again as Nintendo will roll out it's successor game console to the GameCube in mid-2006.

Listen to the conference call (Mention of the Revolution 9 minutes in)

It's as far from an official statement as we can get, but as Engadget say, "MoSys is just the kind of company connected enough to know these kinds of things, but distant enough to have lips that loose".

Nintendo DSNintendo & GameSpy have announced a new service set for launch later this year that will use the wireless service of the DS to create a portable gaming network anyone can use.

The announcement follows earlier reports of Sony negotiating a similar service to provide free PSP WiFi that would be supported by advertisements.

There's a big focus on ease-of-use in the Nintendo announcement, and in Satoru Iwata's detailing of the plan; DS owners will be able to play with others around the world as easily as if they were face-to-face through a minimal setup procedure, and best of all, the service will be completely subscription free:

"Accessing the service will require no added Nintendo subscription charges, whether users hook up using a home broadband Wi-Fi connection or access a Wi-Fi hotspot at a coffee shop, library or elsewhere. It doesn't get any easier than that."

The service will be used by a variety of upcoming games, including the previously announced Animal Crossing® DS. Other titles will be revealed in the coming weeks. When using the service, DS owners can choose whether they would like to play with friends or strangers, whether nearby or on the other side of the world.

Gothic 3Deep Silver and JoWood Productions have released a teaser trailer of Gothic 3 before its official unveiling at E3.

The popular RPG series developed by Piranha Bytes will be showcased at E3 this month but a small trailer featuring half a minute of in-engine footage can be downloaded here (25.1 Mb).

We remind you that Mike Hoge from Piranha Bytes revealed that Gothic 3 could be finished without joining a guild and the game world will consist of three different parts: a desert in the south, the landscape we already know from Gothic II and the northern part. However, they had to reduce the size of the world because they reached the limits of their technical capabilities and had to meet deadlines. Due to the deadlines, the multiplayer mode will not be implemented. Also, the player is no more forced to eat, sleep and supplying other wants regularly or by limiting the inventory. If the player will choose a higher degree of difficulty, then he could confront an Orc at the beginning of the game, instead of a wolf.

Half-Life 2The latest news update when you start Steam gives the confirmation that the new Lost Coast level and a demo of Half-Life 2 for the Xbox will be shown at the E3 Expo:

We'll also be showing off some products at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Half-Life 2 Xbox will be shown in the Xbox area of Microsoft’s booth.

It's unclear who will publish HL2 for the XBox; if the game is released after 31 August it won't be Vivendi Universal Games as their contract with Valve expires on that date, and no new publisher has been announced as of yet.

We'll see more of the Lost Coast at the E3 also, the update says; the new level will appear at the Games for Windows section of the show.

There is no official release date for Lost Coast, but a German games magazine carried a recent exclusive that said it would be released this month

Gamers might worry though that their systems are just not high-spec enough to play it after Doug Lombardi unequivocally confirmed that it will require the highest of high-end systems in a March interview with G4TV.

Star Wars: GalaxiesFerrago report on what sounds like a disastrous Star Wars Galaxies patch recently implemented by Sony Online Entertainment.

According to Ferrago it altered the very core of the gameplay and unbalanced the game as a whole, along with lots of other bugs like items and experience disappearing.

A massive 16,000 players have signed a petition demanding the patch be rolled back:

Players are understandably upset that SOE has neglected to fix the myriad of technical issues that have plagued the game since its launch in favour of foisting a major change to the way the game is played, all without the consent of the game's 250,000 subscribers. Players have also been complaining that negative posts on the official boards have been deleted, with some even claiming to have suffered a ban as a result of their speaking out against SOE's tyranny.

Revenge of the Star Wars Galaxies subscribers

SOE president John Smedley acknowledged the players obvious rejection of the patch, but it doesn't look like the petitioners demand of a roll back will happen as it's part of a complete overhaul of the system:

We realize that the recent Combat Upgrade has caused quite a stir. Yes, we've seen the petition. Yes, we're reading your emails very carefully.. in fact I've responded to many of you personally. From our perspective the Combat Upgrade was a crucial thing for us to do for the long term health of the game. In order to make the experience in SWG more diverse and to breathe new life into this game we felt it was important for us to entirely overhaul the current system and to make sure that it's balanced properly. Are we finished? Not by a longshot... by doing this what we've effectively done is to provide a new baseline to add a lot of new content into the game in a very short time, and to make sure that the professions really mean something in the game.

A proposed bill to impose $1000 bans on any retail store that sells violent video games to minors passed one rung on the ladder to being written into law in California last week and similar bills are expected to pass in three other states this year, according to Reuters.

The California bill was approved by the state's arts committee, and if it successfully passes the other stages in the process, will end up on the desk of Arnie Schwarzenegger:

The bill now goes to the full Assembly. If approved, it would go the state Senate for review.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose Hollywood film career includes violent movies, has not taken a position on the bill, which allows for $1,000 fines for violators and requires violent video games to be labeled.

Nintendo Revolution mockupLast months plausible speculation that the Nintendo Revolution would feature a 3D projection functionality has been rebuked, not by Nintendo but by another piece of rumour to hit the Internets.

A post on the e-empire.com forums purportedly from an anonymous former Nintendo employee dismisses the 3D rumour, and includes detailed information on a lot of features of the console, such as pressure-sensitive wireless controllers, an online service that will trump XBox Live and an extremely advanced voice-control system.

There's not much longer to wait until we get definite information from Nintendo at E3, but this makes for some interesting reading until then:

First off, the 3D visuals he mentioned have nothing to do with the system. Nintendo isn’t crazy.

It will also have gyroscopic controls, but like Brooke said, not all the games will use it. For instance, earlier I mentioned Nintendo has a Halo killer in development for the Revolution. This game will use the gyroscopic controls for aiming as wel as other things. Our game isn’t using this function.

The controller will be wireless; he’s right about that. As you also know, the Xbox 360’s controllers will be wireless as well. Where do you think they got this idea? That’s why Nintendo is still trying to determine what to show at E3. From what I’ve heard, they will show the design of the system as well as games. I’ll tell you about the software later though.

The controller will also be pressure sensitive. The pressure you put into it will determine certain things, such as movement. This is another optional capibility. Someone on Nintendo’s board mentioned this months ago. They said that “touching is good, but feeling is better.” This may sound strange, but it provides great controls. Racing games will really be helped by this control setting.

The Nintendo Revolution will also include voice control more advanced than anything seen so far. Nintendogs is just the beginning. To achieve this, Nintendo sent us headsets (similar to ones you can use for Xbox Live) that are wirelessless communicating with the console. Imagine being able to merely call for an airstrike or reload your gun by giving out commands orally. So far, we have put this feature to the test the most; as you can see, I’m excited over this feature.

From a graphical perspective, the Nintendo Revolution is very powerful. Many people seem to think this won’t be the case, but rest assured. The games I saw while working at Nintendo were very beautiful. I’ll tell you about those later.

I've got the goods on Revolution. Again. (Free reg. req.)

DemonikThe invisible line between games and movies has been smudged a little more with the announcement of Demonik by Clive Barker, a third-person horror action game for unspecified next-gen consoles, which will also be produced simultaneously as a movie.

The details are sparse on what to expect from Demonik, though the announcement includes a teaser trailer and tells us that in the game "you get to play the villain, and in the movie, you will be terrified by him".

Demonik will also see involvement from director John Woo (Face Off, Mission Impossible 2), whose Tiger Hill Entertainment company will co-publish the title with Majesco.

Clive Barker on Demonik:

Demonik will be an intense gaming experience. I’m having a lot of fun enriching the game’s mythology and polishing the characters till they shine. And, of course, adding a little bit of Barker darkness. Demonik promises to be a game that you will play with clammy palms.

Anno 1701

Only a few years ago, Germany was far from being a stronghold of talented game developers, mostly because they lacked the funds and the experience to produce mass-market titles. FarCry has changed much in this regard, and also the latest installment in the successful Anno series has the potential to receive international acclaim. With the E3 looming, Sunflowers now announced Anno 1701. Following Anno 1602 and Anno 1503, the mix of a simulation and strategy game is now set in the 18th century where you have to excel in exploration and sea trade to build up a thriving community. The press release reveals some details on the game's financial aspect:

The development budget totals 8 Million Euros. This makes ANNO 1701 one of the most expensive productions from Germany and one of the most important PC development projects in the whole of Europe.

Whether Sunflowers can make the most of such an enormous budget, remains to be seen. But they shouldn't be in any particular hurry right now; the game is scheduled for a release at the end of 2006.

World of WarcraftWoW provides the gaming world with an apparently incessant flow of juicy news. If you're interested in reaping the real world benefits of virtual goods hoarded during your WoW play, then you should pay attention to what Gamespot.com reports on the sale of vitual gold through eBay:

According to data gathered by Advanced Economic Research Systems, a company that tracks eBay sales, through April more than $2 million was spent on World of Warcraft (WOW) gold this year. Most of the company's employees are dedicated WOW players, and CEO Anthony Sukow began to examine the statistics after making a questionable purchase of his own.

[...]

Sukow discovered that the top seller of WOW gold made more than $23,000 in April, just on WOW gold. And that wasn't even a good month--in January and February the number-one seller took home more than $44,000 each month.

The Matrix OnlineThe Boston Phoenix has an article covering the "event implementers" or "imps" in The Matrix Online, a team of actors hired by Warner Brothers to play the game as the pivotal storyline characters like Morpheus and the Merovingian.

The article includes the necessary qualifications they have to meet as they star in what's being treated by Warner Brothers as basically the fourth movie in the saga:

Once on staff, the imps work in shifts around the clock, to keep the events rolling for players in all time zones and sleep patterns. To keep up, each imp has to know how to play every character, and then hand them off after every shift. When they’re in character, they’re treated like rock stars: whenever they pop up, the human players – friend or foe – usually swarm, which used to cause server load problems. Naturally, Morpheus – one of the biggest characters from the film, where he was played by Lawrence Fishburne – draws a crowd, but according to Hewitt, "what really surprised us is there is a huge popularity for Seraph" – the Oracle’s bodyguard, played in the film by Sing Ngai. "Players, no matter who they are, love to interact with Seraph. They all respect him and they all really defer to him, and when he’s around, they watch what he’s doing and they’re very respectful. Whereas, Morpheus pops in game and there are people who will – I don’t want to say ‘harassment,’ but create a kind of friction, which we enjoy as well."

Quake IV concept sketch to screenshot

More insight into Quake IV can be gleaned from a lengthy feature on Gamespy.

The Art and Design of Quake IV includes some previously unseen design sketches of the game, and various information from Raven and id including their inspiration for the overall design, whether the game will be wholly dark like DOOM 3, and the interesting comment that, from the very beginning of development they questioned how they could differentiate the game from DOOM 3:

Eric Biessman [Raven]: From the beginning, the inception of development, we said, "how can we differentiate ourselves both stylistically and gameplay wise from DOOM?" We just set out to make a fast-action, nonstop game that you'll sit down and play right through. There's more than just fighting, but it's definitely a different game. Without letting you sit down and play through the whole game, it's hard -- I couldn't list everything. We've really gone out of our way to try to differentiate.

XBox 360I reported earlier on a very similar topic concerning the release of the Xbox 360 where Bill Gates confirmed that the Xbox was shipping this year. Well some more news coming in to finally verify beyond doubt that the next-gen console will indeed be shipped in 05.

Slashdot are reporting on an article from Gamespot that claims the Xbox 360 will indeed ship this year and possibly even in November (contrary to earlier speculation).

Gamespot has word that indeed, the Xbox 360 is finally confirmed for a release this year. What's more, the 360 will probably be released this November. The MTV 360 preview scheduled for later this month has literature which reveals the exact month of the new console's release. From the article: "The listing appears to cement suspicions that the next Xbox will launch on the fourth anniversary of the original Xbox's release in mid-November 2001. However, despite the clear wording of the MTV listing, Microsoft representatives said they could not comment on it for the time being."

Sonic the HedgehogGamesindustry.biz reports that in addition to the previously announced Shadow the Hedgehog and the Nintendo DS version of Sonic, SEGA will be introducing "a complimentary line-up of new Sonic products" at E3.

It's not clear if one of the products will be Sonic for the PSP; though it's reasonable to presume since Gamestop.com posted a "coming soon" page for it a couple of days ago, which was hastily removed, probably at SEGA's behest.

Gamesindustry speculate on what to expect:

[...]
other than that there's the possibility of a new "proper" Sonic title, not to mention the "Sonic Collection 2" title mooted by the US press for GameCube, reportedly sporting a line-up that includes the much-wanted Sonic CD and lesser known Sonic the Fighters.

The real question though is whether "new Sonic products" plural and "will be introduced at E3" are significant. If so, we could be looking at previously unannounced titles and not just a rundown and confirmation of what we already know about and suspect.

Half-Life 2Gary McTaggart, a Senior Software Engineer for Valve Software was recently interviewed by a PC Games Hardware magazine, in which he let loose some details concerning the requirements of the upcoming Lost Coast level and settings.

According to McTaggart there will be 2 settings for the revamped Half Life 2 level, Best quality and Lower quality.

In Best quality mode a graphics card capable of 16-bit Floating Point filtered textures, 16-bit Floating Point targets with alpha bend support, and Shader Model 3.0 is required. Basically, the only card that can support all those features on the market right now is Nvidia's GeForce 6 series of GPUs.

In Lower quality mode you will require 16-bit Fixed Point filtered textures and Shader Model 2.0 support.

There is an interesting tidbit of information that has surfaced on 3D technology forum, Beyond3D, regarding some of the technology behind the HDR rendering method used in the new 'Lost Coast' level that is due for release on Half-Life 2 any time soon.

XBox 360 Power ButtonsMore images of the XBox 360 have hit the Web ahead of Thursday's MTV event to unveil the console; a Microsoft launch party saw the inevitable leaking of images of various pieces of hardware including an upright image of the console, pics of the controller and the Media Center remote as well as nifty customizable power buttons:

Microsoft must have been dreaming if they thought they could hold a launch party for the Xbox 360 last night and somehow stop us from getting our hands on photos of every last piece of hardware that was there.
