Nintendo RevolutionDetails on the Nintendo Revolution's "very unique" controllers, launch date, pricing and how games will be played on it will be revealed by the end of the year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told Reuters.

Iwata also reiterated Nintendo's focus on making gaming more accessible to non-gamers with the Revolution:

"In the past we tried to entice new users with increasingly sophisticated graphics, improved sound, and complex storytelling, but to a big extent, I think we've pursued that as much as we can," said Iwata.

"Right now, game consoles are important for the game fan, but for the rest of the family, it's just a piece of nuisance that's loud and eats up electricity ... We want to create games for people who haven't played games but are curious about them."

In their latest Steam update, Valve report from E3 with news that they are busy showing off the new HDR lighting technology for Half life 2 (High Definition Range Lighting). People are also being treated to Half Life 2 on the Xbox, a format Valve stress they are eager to get into the hands of Xbox owners the world over.

We are pretty caught up with E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) again this year. Half-Life 2 Xbox is playable on the show floor, and lots of people are trying their hand at the Gravity Gun. We can't wait to get the game into the hands of Xbox owners.

Our HDR (High Dynamic Range lighting) demonstration of HL2's Lost Coast is also on display. This soon-to-be-released area of Half-Life 2 introduces a new character, whom we first mentioned (in the form of a concept sketch) here.

They also mention a new character in Half Life 2: The Lost Coast (see above)

Playstation 3The gloves have come off early as the competition between Sony and Microsoft for the next-gen games console market begins.

In an interview with Reuters, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kazuo Hirai branded the XBox 360 a combination of todays technology that wasn't future-proofed, referred to it as the XBox 1.5 and said having a goal of being first to market, as Microsoft have done, was like "missing the forest for the trees".

Hirai also said the Playstation 3 would be packed with future technology, hinting that because of this, consumers would be willing to pay a higher price for it, perhaps lending some more weight to the rumour yesterday that the PS3 would cost in or around $465.

XBox 360 E3 KioskAnandtech.com got a little suspicious of the XBox 360 demos on display at Microsoft's E3 booth, because they didn't look all that great for a next-generation console and the controllers used wires.

So they had a closer look at the kiosks housing the demos and discovered that the XBox 360's were only for show, and the demos were being powered by Powermac G5's:

A pair of Apple Powermac G5 systems were actually running the Xbox 360 demos, not the 360 console. The consoles in the kiosks weren't actually running, they were just for show - now you know why all the controllers were wired.

Because the G5 systems can only use a GeForce 6800 Ultra or an ATI Radeon X800 XT, developers had to significantly reduce the image quality of their demos - which explains their lack luster appearance. Anti-aliasing wasn't enabled on any of the demos, while the final Xbox 360 console will have 4X AA enabled on all titles.

We are disappointed that all of Microsoft's Xbox 360 kiosks were running G5 systems as we wanted to see real hardware in action, not behind glass, but Apple should be quite happy.

PS3Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has said the company hasn't decided which territory to launch the new PlayStation 3 in first.

Traditionally, Sony's new consoles have been launched first in Japan, with other territories following later:

In an interview with the CNBC network, Hirai denied that Sony had already decided to start selling the console only in Japan next year, before releasing it in North America around next September.

"We haven't determined which territory we will go with first this time around just yet," he said.

"We will have to look at development and how things are coming along in terms of manufacture and all the other logistical things to determine which territory or multiple territories go first."

Gears of War

One of the games most impressing attendees at E3 is Gears of War for the XBox 360, built on Epic Games' new Unreal 3 engine.

The game was shown in a 20-minute demo at E3, but that short glimpse generated in-depth previews of the game from all of the major game sites, and they're all favourable; all were impressed with the sheer beauty of the graphics, and some with the care and detail put into the storyline.

The game takes place on an earth-like planet called Sera, with a long history of war and conflict. The citizens eventually managed to find peace for a time, but the discovery of a new form of fuel called Emulsion plunged the planet back into war again as warring nations bega fighting over it.

Meanwhile, beneath the soil, a Locust species was waiting to emerge and on "Emergence Day" burst to the surface and destroyed a quarter of the world's population.

The survivors forgot their own disagreements and joined together to fight the common enemy, launching a counter-attack with orbital-beam weapons that destroyed 90% of Sera's surface.

The main character in the game is Marcus Fenix, a hardened soldier imprisoned for ignoring his orders on Emergence Day so that he could save his father; the game begins with Fenix in a military prison, but he is soon released because resources to fight against the Locusts are running low.

A detailed booklet given out at the showing is an indicator of the depth of the storyline, but 1UP.com say knowing the backstory isn't needed to appreciate the stunning action of the game, and IGN.com go so far as to say we can forget about Halo 3, Gears of War will be the killer-app of the XBox 360.

IGN.com: "forget about Halo 3. From now until the game is actually in my hands, the only thing we care about is Gears of War. "
Gamespot.com: Gears of War is a visually stunning game that will obviously appeal to Xbox fans biding their time for Halo 3
Gamespy.com: "the most impressive Xbox 360 title we've seen so far"
1UP.com: "the buzz from E3 is that Gears of War is an early favorite for the title of flagship first-generation Xbox 360 game"

Vietcong 2

New screenshots and concept art for Vietcong 2 have been released at E3.

The FPS sequel will feature a new 3D game engine, and will let players see the Vietnam war from the perspective of both sides.
In the American role, you are an army captain escorting a reporter covering the Tet festivities in the city of Hue in 1968 just as the Tet Offensive occurs, and eventually you take part in the final push to reclaim the Imperial Palace and the city of Hue.
Meanwhile in the Vietcong role, you play as a young conscript fighting against the South Vietnamese army in the areas around his village, eventually becoming a Sergeant in the Hue uprising and storming the Imperial Palace.

Vietcong 2 is due to be released this year for the PC.

Prey

Game xStream, an online distribution service for games similar to Valve's Steam, has announced a long-term partnership with 3D Realms to distribute their games online, beginning with Prey, the resurrected shooter recently shown at the E3.

Like Steam, Game xStream allows buyers to download games to their PC's for later activation on the official release date for the game, but a feature it has that Steam doesn't is dynamic streaming, which allows the player to buy an already released game and begin playing seconds after they buy, with no wait for the entire game to be downloaded:

"Gamers will be able to pre-order and pre-load Prey onto their hard drives, ready for instant activation and play upon the official release date," said 3D Realms CEO, Scott Miller. "Or, after the official release, players will be able to buy the game and begin playing in minutes, as if the full game was already downloaded. This is what sets Game xStream apart from anything else the industry has seen."

3D Realms Partners with Game xStream for Exclusive Online Distribution of Prey

Scheduled for a 2006 release on the PC, and featuring an unusual blend of Native-American mythology, sci-fi and first-person shooter action, Prey was shown to a lucky few behind closed doors at the E3.

Gamespot got a look, and in their first impressions preview, drew attention to the game's design elements:

What's really wild about the game is how it uses direction, gravity, and portals to surprise you, disorient you, and impress you. Basically, "up" and "down" is relative throughout the game; certain types of corridors allow you to run straight up onto a wall and then keep moving "forward." Portals tear through the fabric of the bizarre alien landscape you're fighting in, revealing completely different environments on the other side. You run right on through (and can even fire your weapons through) and just keep going, and you'll be suddenly surrounded by different terrain.

Some other really crazy levels featured sensors that could be shot to cause the level to literally turn upside down. You fall to the "ceiling" when this happens. As we watched the 20-minute demo, we couldn't help but wonder about all the possibilities that this type of level design could introduce. Granted, without any sense of direction to rely on, these levels might end up being just completely bewildering. After seeing the levels in action, we can say that they sure looked interesting--far more so than the typical corridor crawls you'd expect.

Half-Life 2Valve have been showing off their new lighting technology for Half Life 2 at E3, known as HDR or High Dynamic Range. IGN scored an interview with a Valve rep:

We talked with one of the Valve reps giving the presentation, and he said that although Lost Coast would require a pretty high-end system (3.2GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 6800GT or X800 Pro, et cetera), the Aftermath expansion pack would allow the player to disable HDR and tweak the visuals as usual. He also mentioned that HDR would be partially implemented in HL2 in a future patch, but that they probably wouldn't completely overhaul the lighting for two reasons: one, it would require a download on the order of five gigabytes; and two, they felt that there were certain sections of the game that were actually better, gameplay-wise, with the current lighting.

Also Gamespot has an interview with Valve's Doug Wood, in which he tries to give players a better understanding as just exactly what HDR will be bringing to Half Life 2.

Indiana JonesEarly reports coming in suggest that Indy is coming back for a splash on tomorrow's consoles. No new comer to the gaming world, though the aging archaeologist/Action hero has not really seen any action worth writing home about in recent times.

Ferrago are reporting on a possible adventure with Dr. Jones in 2007 which they say, may coincide with the release of the much talked about Indiana Jones IV movie.

Planned for release in 2007, the dates suggest a possible tie-in with the Indiana Jones IV movie which has been languishing in development hell for the last few years. That is only hopeful guesswork at the moment, as the only hard facts we know about the next Indy games is that they will take advantage of the superior graphical capabilities of the new consoles and that they will feature much improved AI and physics over previous incarnations. Which is about as surprising as Indiana belting a Nazi in the mouth. Still, it's nice to know that they are doing something with the old chap.

Ps3A question 3DGPU are asking in the face of so much new console gadgetry. One reviewer there hits home the point of how easier consoles are for games developers, in so much that the consoles' popularity far exceeds that of the PC and you are much more likely to succeed even with a bad game. As a result, developers may be less and less excited about taking their game to the PC, with a sure fire success on the console.

As a PC gamer, the announcement, and subsequently the launch, of new consoles horrifies me. The sound of cash registers ka-chinging in the ears of PC game developers can be heard quite easily, and often. Console gaming has a much wider audience than PC gaming, with young kids having easy access to them compared to powerful PC’s. Thus the money-making possibilities are much easier and quicker for game developers in the console gaming market, compared to the PC gaming market. It’s easy to make a bad game, and get away with it on consoles, than it is for PC gaming.

Nintendo RevolutionA new press release from Nintendo listing the features of the Revolution contains an interesting (though vague) statement that has sparked another mini-wave of speculation:

A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game “masterpieces” as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea.

Boingboing take this to mean that the Revolution will run anyone's code, opening up a whole new community of homebrew coders creating games legally (a very new direction for gaming consoles) though Gizmodo note that Nintendo made no hint whatsoever that unsigned code would run on the Revolution, and they even mentioned a new DRM system at their press conference at E3.

Atari Flashback 2If you look back on the days of playing the Atari 2600 with wistful nostalgia, you're in luck; this summer you'll be able to relive those bygone days with the Atari Flashback 2.0, modeled after the Atari 2600 and packed to the brim with 40 classics like Centipede, Missile Command and Yars' Revenge.

The Godfather Game

kotaku got to play The Godfather: The Game at the E3 Expo, and posted up a favourable first impressions:

You have 10 neighborhoods to work your muscle-flexing, window-breaking, cop-bribing ways in. The game is fairly open ended; you can get assignments by talking to your boss or just sorta roam around and try to extend the reach of your family.

I walked in to a butcher’s shop and hit him up for a little payoff. When he said no I took a bat, conveniently located in a nearby corner, and went to town on his glass display case, cash register and scales. (You see, if I had beaten him to death he couldn’t pay me.)

The Godfather uses a intuitive and visceral sort of control set-up that mimics Fight Night. To swing a bat, for instance, you pull back on the right thumbstick and then slam it forward. To grab someone, you pull in both triggers and hold. To choke you click down on both sticks, and to throttle you wiggle the sticks.

The shooting is also pretty cool. You can pinpoint specific body parts when you shoot. So if a guy is firing at you, you can choose to take him out with a headshot, kneecap him or shoot the gun out of his hand.

I also love the animations in the game. I unleaded a Tommy Gun into this old woman walking by and she jittered around, hands stuck straight down by her side as the bullets winged into her. As soon as the clip emptied, she slumped to the floor.

The game is a fantastic blending of GTA-mechanics and old-school mafioso violence. I think this could shape up to be one of the best games on the Xbox 360.

SporeWith the Sims franchise having been milked excessively, it was high time for their creator to move on to something new, but ever since mastermind Will Wright emerged with his new game Spore (we reported), the gaming world has been wondering how the new life simulation might actually look like. EA may now satisfy at least some curiosity by hosting the official website where, apart from a quite amusing flash intro, you can take a look at several in-game screenshots. Other than that, the website has very little to offer, but the game is probably in too early a stage to expect more than that for the time being.

Alan WakeFollowing the recent announcement that they are working on the "psychological action thriller" Alan Wake, Remedy (Max Payne) have now released five new in-game screenshots that give a hint what the new graphics engine will be capable of. Remedy's Sam Lake and Petri Järvilehto also talked about their game in an interview with Gamecloud:

Technology-wise, one of the key things for us was that instead of the very linear experience of the Max Payne games, we wanted to move to a massively large, free-roaming open world. And we also wanted to make this open world as dynamic as possible. So we’ve been putting a huge amount of effort into building the simulation. Light is completely dynamic, including the day & night time cycles, trees and foliage and water reacts to the wind. Morning, day and dusk all feel completely different and the transitions in weather and time are completely seamless.

They also aim at a "longer gameplay experience" than in May Payne 2.

Gamespot has a preview of Call of Duty 2: Big Red One for the Ps2. After being shown a demonstration of the game running in the company of John Hillen, Activision's military advisor, they were convinced it was the Xbox version.

Perhaps the most impressive thing we can say about Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is that when we saw the game running, it looked so good for a console shooter that we could have sworn it was the Xbox version.

The game is being developed partially by Gray Matter, the very same crowd that worked on the United Offensive expansion pack for the PC.

The game itself should offer more of that intense, hold-onto-your-helmet World War II combat that the Call of Duty franchise is known for. However, this is the first game in the franchise that will stick with the same character from beginning to end. You will play as a soldier in the "Big Red One," the famed 1st Infantry Division, as you go from North Africa, Italy, and Central Europe. We saw an intense battle for a village in Belgium, and the buildings were all gutted and burned out. Tracers and machine gun fire were everywhere, and you saw your fellow GI's running around, shooting, and getting shot.

Final Fantasy VII

A glimpse of what the original Final Fantasy VII would look like if it had been created for the PlayStation 3 has been displayed at the E3; an impressive technical demo of the intro sequence to the game was shown, though there's no word if it hints at a full on conversion for the new console (watch the demo here).

More information has also been revealed on the individual projects of Square Enix's Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, which consists of the movie Advent Children, Crisis Core for the PSP and Dirge of Cerberus for the PS2.

Gamespot have the lowdown:

Advent ChildrenAdvent Children: "Some of the characters in the movie, including Cloud, were known to be infected with geostigma, a fatal disease resulting from exposure to the planet's lifestream energy. There appears to be more to it than a simple malaise, however. Vincent tells Cloud that his body is reacting to an "unwanted visitor," while the villainous Kadaj tells a group of children that "the planet doesn't like our powers." He then tells the kids that the planet is the source of the pain that they're experiencing, and that to end their suffering, they need to "strike back at the planet." Kadaj is revealed to have a connection to Jenova, meaning that the world is once again imperiled by the calamity from the skies. At the very end of the trailer we saw, Sephiroth was revealed by a slow camera panning up the length of his slender frame (so he definitely has his part in the story, though his origins aren't made clear). Vincent does tell Cloud that it was possible for another Sephiroth to be created, so it's within the realm of possibility that we're dealing with a clone.

Preview and new trailer"

Dirge of CerberusDirge of Cerberus: "Dirge of Cerberus is set three years after the original FFVII game (and one year after the events in Advent Children), and the plot revolves around a group of Deepground Soldiers who emerge from their underground lair--in which they were apparently buried after the meteor events at the end of FFVII--and begin terrorizing Midgar. Vincent Valentine, the enigmatic character from the previous game, is somehow connected to these attacks, and he'll be the character you take control of as you investigate the attacks and attempt to get to the root of the mystery surrounding the appearance of the Deepground Soldiers. The only other character from FFVII that's known to appear in the game is Cait Sith, although we wouldn't be surprised to see a few other familiar faces when the game comes out.

Preview and screens"

Crisis Core: "[An animated concept] trailer revolved around Zack, the soldier who fought alongside Cloud before the events of the original Final Fantasy VII. It showed a rendering of the Final Fantasy VII bit where Zack and Cloud spoke together, interspersed with images of Sephiroth going mad in Nibelheim and many scenes of Zack in battle. This suggests that Crisis Core will be a prequel to its source material, with Zack as the main character.

Before CrisisBefore Crisis: "Square Enix announced that it will be bringing its highly successful mobile massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis to the United States in 2006.

Half-Life 2VRMag, an online magazine in photographic virtual reality, has published a review of Half-Life 2, but instead of the usual in-game screenshots the author has opted for panoramic 3D shots.

Using Garry's mod for the Source engine, the reviewer froze surrounding NPCs and spawned a vehicle to chauffeur him around City 17 in order to obtain the choicest of pictures.

The images are further improved using Neotokyo's HDR Bloom Mod by making use of the Bloom effect.

Generally, before releasing games, publishers and developers give game portals some screenshots where you can see the graphic features of the in-development game, and perhaps some game action. I wanted to go further and highlight the architectural and photographic aspects of the game, which I demonstrate with QTVR images shot during game play, the first time (that I'm aware of) that this has been done.

In 1998, when Half Life was first published, it was the first storytelling game of the entertainment history; a movie-like game, where just the intro took about eight minutes of titles of the cast and the directors, moving you on a train while exploring your way to the MENSA base station. Valve worked very hard on the game-rendering engine, resulting in spectacular simulated worlds presented in HL2; today, it is probably the state-of-the-art in real-time rendering systems.

Sony PSPSony Computer Entertainment Europe boss David Reeves has confirmed earlier speculation that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto franchise is headed to the PSP this Autumn.

Reeves went on to say that the PSP GTA game titled Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, will ship soon after the release of Sony's handheld PSP in Europe on September 1st.

This is the first official word on both the name and the planned launch window of the game, and the choice of "Liberty City Stories" as the subtitle is already fuelling much speculation about the content of the game - Liberty City being the metropolis in which the first PS3 GTA title was set.

It's expected that Rockstar will show off a version of the game behind closed doors at the E3 show, which kicks off in a matter of hours here in Los Angeles.

XBox 360The whole "digital entertainment hub" angle Microsoft are aiming for with the XBox 360 became clearer after I read an interview on Tom's Hardware Guide with Jeff Henshaw (executive producer of Digital Entertainment for the XBox); any device that has a USB 2.0 port will be able to be hooked up to the console, including the Sony PSP and Apple's iPod (Bill Gates confirmed this in a recent interview with Time Magazine) among lots of other devices:

First he plugged in a Rio Carbon and began streaming tunes over the Xbox's sound system right from the MP3 player itself. Next, he took a Kodak EasyShare camera and snapped pictures of all of us, plugged the camera right into the 360 and displayed us on screen. You can even plug in a Sony PSP and watch pictures and listen to music it contains.

When asked what the thinking was behind letting gamers plug a competitor's product in to use on a Microsoft device, Mr. Henshaw replied, "Other console makers want to force you to buy brand "S" memory and use a brand "S" format to play on brand "S" TV's. We just want things to work for the gamer and be as easy as possible."

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

A new trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the GameCube was unveiled at Nintendo's E3 press conference, along with new artwork and screenshots.

The trailer can be viewed on the official Zelda site (Quicktime), and a first-impressions preview is already available on Gamespot:

In the new Legend of Zelda game, Link will apparently be able to turn into a werewolf. The gameplay effects of this are only hinted at in the new trailer; oddly enough, it appears that Link will have some kind of partner in crime that will actually ride him like a horse while he's in wolf form. This unknown and rather sinister-looking creature is a diminutive elflike thing. It appears that Link is at one point captured and imprisoned while in wolf form and that the new teammate, as yet unnamed, will help him bust out. Some of the wolf-form capabilities are revealed in the trailer, as well; you'll be able to climb walls and engage in combat while in wolf form (or perhaps just while your partner is riding Link). The final sequence of the wolf footage shows Link and friend taking on three shadowy forms and almost instantly taking them down with a series of rapid charges. Whether the wolf form is some kind of constantly usable power or is something that's triggered at certain junctions of the storyline is currently unknown.

Nintendo RevolutionAt the Nintendo E3 Conference unveiling the Revolution, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata answered the question of backward compatibility in style.

He said he wanted the Revolution to be a "virtual console" and as such the Nintendo Revolution will be able to download 20 years of Nintendo content - virtually every Nintendo console game ever created will be playable on the Revolution, from the GameCube right back to the original NES.

Iwata also teased the audience by saying that the Revolution's controllers would be wireless and "very unique", but declined to show one or give further details.

The other main points in Iwata's presentation were:
* Revolution is planned for next year
* Revolution will be about the size of a stack of three DVD cases, and will stand vertically or sit horizontally
* Big franchises will be coming to Revolution; Smash Brothers is due for release at the same time as the Revolution launch, new versions of Mario and Zelda are already underway and Square Enix will produce a version of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the console
* Stating "There is no mystery to the Revolution's core technology", Iwata pointed out the emphasis Nintendo's competitors put on graphics and horsepower in their consoles, and said graphics will be very impressive in Revolution games, but also said the Revolution's advances will be in areas that don't have a direct impact on gameplay
* Revolution will be compatible with the recently announced Nintendo Wireless Service
* Revolution will "attract casual gamers better than anyone" through consumer friendly content, control and interface. Nintendo intend to also take care of the "core gamers" with new titles, and also to attract consumers completely new to gaming
* Revolution will be game-developer friendly - "this is a console where the big idea can prevail over big budgets"

Heroes of Might & Magic V

On the eve of E3, Ubisoft has released nine new screenshots on Heroes of Might & Magic V. Developed by Nival Interactive (Blitzkrieg, Silent Storm), the latest installment in the succesful Might & Magic universe will still be a turn-based strategy game with RPG elements, tactical combat, different factions, and a story-driven campaign mode. The graphics will be overhauled completely, however, casting aside its former 2D look in favour of modern 3D graphics. More details are likely to be revealed tomorrow when the game is showcased at E3. Ubisoft hasn't been too specific about the game's release date, the only indication being "in early 2006" (who said "when it's done"?).

By the way, you can keep track of Ubisoft's E3 line-up on the newly hosted E3 website.

GameBoy Micro

Nintendo showed off the first glimpse of a new branch of the Gameboy franchise at their E3 press conference.

The Gameboy Micro, coming this Autumn, is "just a hair bigger, and about two-thirds the weight, of an iPod mini." It contains the best and brightest screen Nintendo have ever put in a handheld, will play all Gameboy Advance games and will have customizable faceplates.

Nintendo made a point of stating that the Gameboy Micro is not a successor to the DS or Gameboy Advance, but is a morphing of the Gameboy brand aimed at the "image conscious gamer".

Watch the unveiling of Gameboy Micro at Nintendo's E3 press conference

CubeEurope.com has some more specific details:

Some more details include the dimensions of the new unit: at 4 inches wide, 2 inches tall and 0.7 inches deep and weighing a mere 2.8 ounces, this Gameboy marks Nintendo's smallest ever. It has a brushed metallic case, again fully removeable and interchangeable and will feature the standard-sized GBA 2 inch screen only with considerably more juice behind its display. The screen will be immensely bright, and will be adjustable by gamers to accomodate different lighting conditions. Also, the Micro WILL have a headphone jack. Hallellujah.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Bethesda Softworks will be only showing a behind-closed-doors demo of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion at the E3, but Gamespot.com have posted up four new screenshots and an interview with producer Todd Howard.

Howard is cagy about providing more information about the story, but gives details on the combat system, the loot and item systems, and the good news that the game is in the final stages of its development - the world of Tamriel is mostly built, and Bethesda are in a stage they call the "clutter pass":

That's where we drop in all the stuff, like books, weapons, and thousands of forks and plates. We're big fans of world clutter. Forest covers about half the game's space, but even within the forest we have subregions of more tropical-based stuff going up to colder, more conifer-laden areas.

A scientific survey by AOL Games into the prevalence of video gaming in America has revealed some interesting statistics; according to the results of the nationwide poll, almost half of all American consumers have played games, either on a console, PC or Cellphone/PDA.

Adults are also stealing the percentage of total players away from the teenage age bracket - two in five of the adults polled (aged 18-55) play games, 10% of those have admitted they've actually become addicted to playing, and a quarter of all the adults polled said they have played games all night until the sun came up.

Almost half of the adults feel there is too much violence in gaming, and 66% would go as far as saying the government should ban the selling of violent or sexually explicit games to under-eighteens.

I haven't been able to find a page to link to on AOL Games, so I've reproduced the press release in the Discussion link below.

Nintendo RevolutionAfter Microsoft showcased their Xbox 360 on MTV last Thursday, and Sony revealed their Ps3 yesterday in Los Angeles, Nintendo has finally spoken out and stepped up to take part in the next-gen console wars in which it was long absent.

usatoday.com are reporting on some details that Nintendo have let out concerning their upcoming console codenamed "Revolution".

The revolution is reportedly about the size of a stack of three DVD cases and has no visible knobs, buttons or ports for joysticks. Instead the console will use wireless controllers, and can sit flat or stand vertically.

Also it will play games on full-size DVDs as well as being backwards compatible with older GameCube games on mini-DVDs and will play back video DVDs too.

Nintendo, which mostly ignored the Net with GameCube, also is catching up with the online wave. Revolution will offer broadband access to a free Internet-based player matching service, similar to Xbox Live, that also will have downloadable versions of nearly every Nintendo game — from arcade classic Donkey Kong through current titles such as Mario Sunshine. (Nintendo hasn't decided whether downloading will be free.)

Xbox spokesmen have pointed out that 360's specifications are 10 to 13 times more powerful than those of the original Xbox; Sony said Monday that the processor in Play-Station 3, which will come in several colors and be out next spring, will be 35 times more powerful than the PS2 processor.

Nintendo makes more modest claims that Revolution is two or three times more powerful than GameCube. "It's not all about having 'turbo power,' " Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan says. "It's about what you do with it."

Analyst Richard Doherty of The Envisioneering Group says one of Revolution's chief advantages is that designers will find it far easier to create games for Revolution than for competing systems. "They do not need to make major changes from the games they were designing," he says. "They have better performance without having to do a lot of extra work."

XBox 360According to Kotaku's most recent E3 post, Microsoft has held a very fruitful press conference, during which they announced that the Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible with current Xbox games. What was more surprising though, was the announcement of over 25 titles to be ready for the Xbox 360's launch date with 160 under development.

A pretty impressive line-up and another hit back at Sony who revealed their Ps3 to the world last night.

At the press conference, they also showcased Project Gotham Racing 3, Gears of War, Call of Duty 2, Kameo, NBA 2K6, Ghost Recon 3 and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

There was also an Electronic Arts montage of six titles with a bit more details on Need for Speed Most Wanted.

The montage showed some pretty interesting footage from The Godfather, Fifa 06, NBA Live 2006, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and Madden 06.

Surprise guest Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix took the stage to announced that his company would be making games for the Xbox 360 and that Final Fantasy XI would (re)launch on the next gen Microsoft console.

Quake IVNot long after Quake IV was officially announced for the Xbox 360, and a fresh new screenshot emerged...bit-tech.net posted an interesting article in which they claim the popular PCGamer magazine has news that the eagerly awaited next installment to the Quake iteration, Quake 4, is on course to be released in time for Christmas.

According to popular UK games magazine, PCGamer, Quake 4 is scheduled for release in time for it to appear in your stockings by the fireplace on that special day towards the end of December. It's that time again, The Strogg return for another installment the very popular Quake series.

There are few people who can deny that Doom 3 was made in the exact way that idSoftware wanted it, whether you loved or hated it. The game was built around its atmosphere, and it did a very good job in that respect. It is no surprise that idSoftware are right in the thick of Quake 4's development.

We already reported that Quake IV was officially announced for the Xbox 360. The first in-game screenshot of the XBox 360 version has now surfaced, not giving too much away but just about enough to whet the appetite for more.

In the game, you are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad and Earth's valiant invasion force. Fight alone, with your squad, and in hover tanks and mechanized walkers as you engage in a heroic mission into the heart of the Strogg war machine. But, in this epic war between worlds, the only way to defeat the Strogg is to become one of them. Battle through early missions as a deadly marine, then after your capture as a marine-turned-Strogg with enhanced abilities and the power to turn the tide of the war.

The first details on Sony's new console have been revealed; it will be officially called the Playstation 3, and is due for release in 2006 - I haven't been able to find any images as of yet. It will be backwards-compatible right back to the original Playstation, and will use the Blu-ray media format. Gamespot have the rest of the specs:

It will also have slots for Memory Stick Duo, a SD slot, and a compact flash memory slot. It will also sport a detachable 2.5 inch HDD.

Out of the box, the PS3 will have the capability to support seven Bluetooth controllers. It will also have six USB slots for peripherals--four up front and two in the back.

Sony also laid out the technical specs of the device. The PlayStation 3 will feature the much-vaunted Cell processor, which will run at 3.2 Ghz and feature 2.18 teraflops of performance. It will sport 256mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 Ghz, have 256MB of GDDR VRAM at 700mhz.

Update:
Playstation 3 Officially Announced, Release in 2006. Pics and specs revealed.

The official unveiling of the PlayStation 3 is underway right now at Sony's E3 press conference; the main sites providing live updates from the event are kotaku, Gamesarefun (currently undergoing a Slashdotting), and the Guardian's gamesblog, which have all gone silent in the past hour.

kotaku's last post sounds promising:

The biggest screen I’ve seen in my life takes up an entire wall.

Smaller screens float to the side. All of the screens are showing shifting, soft colors and sort of overlapping squares.

A sorta generic house music is blasting away and the room is slowly starting to fill.

There’s a definite buzz starting to build. Everyone’s expecting something big, I sure hope they don’t disappoint.

Welcome Chang3Sony have launched a PS3 ad blitz on L.A. bus shelters and billboards ahead of their pre-E3 press conference later today.

The ads don't give much away; the simple design only includes obscured versions of the famous Square, Circle, Triangle, and X patterns from the PlayStation controller and the slogan "Welcome chang3":

Combined, a half-circle, broken X, sharply cut triangle, and cropped square end up looking more like glyphs from another world.

Sony's message: "Welcome Chang3." Yes, instead of an "E" the letter is replaced with a squared-off "3," clearly signaling the PS3's presence at the show. While it's still hazy just how much of a presence Sony will make with the PS3, these ads prove that the electronics giant has not forgotten how to play the game. Indeed, Microsoft's strong showing of Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Revolution debut won't go unchallenged by the king of the hill.

Pre-E3 2005: PlayStation 3 to Change E3?

Gamesindustry.biz has the speculation on what to expect from the Sony press conference:

The Japanese company is widely expected to lead its press conference with an unveiling of the PlayStation 3 and the gossip on the ground here is that it could be touted as much more powerful than Microsoft's rival Xbox 360, which was unveiled on Thursday night.

Sony is also expected to discuss exclusive software deals aimed at derailing the excitement over the Microsoft console.

Tetris ShelvesTetris nerds can now assert their superior fandom by installing shelves in their homes made from individual blocks cut to the exact proportions of the original pieces in the game; it's expensive though, each block will set you back $350:

The storage units are sold piece by piece, so you can buy as many as you want and arrange them however you want. Just think – you can recreate your own gigantic Tetris game in your living room – only without the bottom row disappearing every time you align things properly! Hopefully stacking this stuff together is as much fun as playing Tetris - cause its way more expensive. Each block runs about $350 however, so if you want more than 3 or 4 blocks, you are going to be spending some serious dough. The ten-piece set shown above is $6790.

Nintendo Revolution

Nintendo's release of official details about the Revolution squashed the very pro-looking fake video that popped up on the web over the weekend, but now a new crop of unofficial images have appeared, this time showing two controllers (one for each hand) and a very dull looking design for the front of the console.

Ghost Recon 3

Gamespot have the first look at an early build of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 3 for the XBox 360 (it was briefly glimpsed during the MTV XBox 360 unveiling, and is due for release at the same time as the launch of the next-gen console later this year).

There is no information given about a multiplayer aspect, but the graphical detail impressed Gamespot's reviewer, and they go into detail on the overhauled interface for the game called the "integrated warfighter system", which will consist of one or more onscreen windows that will serve multiple purposes (see screenshot above):

When you issue orders to your squad mates, they'll appear in the window to respond to you, and you'll be able to see the action that's happening around them as well. You might use the windows to view a satellite map to assist you in navigating the giant metropolis of Mexico City. Or you may talk to vehicle drivers and pilots assisting you on the battlefield, or receive orders from a remote commander. You'll even use airborne predator drones to scout out hostile territory ahead, and see what it sees, using these interface windows.

As the E3 nears, more and more line-up lists are being released by the game companies; most of the lists I've seen so far contain a few highly anticipated games mingled with lower-profile games, but the 2K Games line-up released a short while ago has a higher than usual blockbuster quotient:

Prey: Developed by Human Head Studios and produced by 3D Realms, Prey is a revolutionary first person shooter for PC and the Xbox 360. Prey is being exclusively showcased by ATI in a movie theater-style exhibition in booth #600 in the South Hall.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The fourth game in the PC strategy series that has sold over five million copies, Sid Meier's Civilization IV is a bold step forward for the franchise, with spectacular new 3D graphics and all-new single and multiplayer content.

Sid Meier's Pirates! [XBox]: In Sid Meier's Pirates! for Xbox, players take the leading role of a Pirate Captain in the 17th century Caribbean - amassing fortune and fame in an attempt to seize a rightful place as one of the most revered and feared pirates in history. Players test their skills as a sea captain exploring the high seas and exotic ports in a richly detailed 3D world. Some of the many additions for the Xbox version of the game include two new 2-4 player console-exclusive mini-games, Xbox Live leaderboards and content downloads, support for Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound and HDTV resolutions and much more.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: In development for PC and a next-generation console system, the fourth title in the best-selling Elder Scrolls series brings the RPG genre to new heights with its combination of freeform gameplay and cutting-edge graphics. Oblivion features a 3D engine that can render stunningly realistic environments, groundbreaking AI for all characters in the game, and the same open-ended gameplay style that has made The Elder Scrolls one of the most critically acclaimed franchises of all-time. Oblivion will be shown by appointment only at Bethesda Softworks' meeting room, #2352 in the West Hall.

Serious Sam II: Sam "Serious" Stone returns to PC and Xbox in this first person shooter from Croteam, the creators of the Serious Sam franchise. Serious Sam II features a brand new 3D engine, over 40 new levels, new vehicles and crazy weapons, and the waves upon waves of enemies that the series is known for.

24: The Game: Set between seasons two and three of the hit series on FOX, 24: The Game puts gamers in the shoes of Jack Bauer, a counter terrorism agent dealing with the longest day of his life, with jaw-dropping revelations for fans of the series and thrilling, non-stop time-pressure gameplay.

Shattered Union: Set atop the smoldering ruins of a fictional United States torn apart by civil war, Shattered Union is an action-packed turn-based strategy game for console and PC. Gamers will play through an exciting single player campaign to reunite the country by force or online in one-on-one matches.

Conflict: Global Terror: The Conflict series joins the war on terrorism in this highly anticipated entry in the successful franchise which has shipped over 2.5 million units in North America alone. In fall 2005, the original Delta Force members from the Conflict series will return to fight alongside players on consoles and PC in a variety of locations around the world where terrorism is present.

Snow: A gritty strategy game for PC and Xbox that follows the tradition of classic movie and television crime dramas and requires players to oversee every aspect of the criminal organization. This will surely make for an intense, paranoid and most importantly, strategic gaming experience.

Vietcong 2: With its brand new 3D engine, all-new single player campaign and new multiplayer modes, Vietcong 2 for PC aims to improve on the acclaimed gameplay of the first game, while presenting a completely new experience. a believable story driven by the player's character, which takes place in one area over several weeks, during the Tet offensive in the Imperial city of Hue. Player's will fight through dense jungle, sparsely populated suburbs, city streets, various houses, water canals and even an extremely large ancient citadel complex with an imperial palace.

Zathura: Based on the highly anticipated film of the same name, Zathura will be released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox in conjunction with the theatrical release of the movie in late 2005, and will allow players to create their own high-action space adventures in a visually stunning 3D game environment.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth: A first-person horror game for Xbox that combines intense action with adventure gameplay, Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth draws upon the rich mythology created by author H.P. Lovecraft that has been enjoyed by fans around the world for nearly 80 years.

24: The Game

2K Games today announced they have secured the North American publishing rights to 24: The Game.

To be released for the PlayStation 2 in Autumn 2005, the development of the game saw a close collaboration with the team behind the TV show; the writer and music composer for the series were onboard and it includes the voice talent and likenesses of many of the TV show's actors and actresses, including Kiefer Sutherland and Elisha Cuthbert.

Fans of the TV series who get the game are also promised some answers to questions they might have had concerning the plot from seasons two and three:

"24: The Game not only creates an intense gaming experience with the same time-based tension the show is well known for, but also answers questions fans have had about the events that transpired between seasons two and three."

24: The Game lets gamers take on multiple roles from the show as they frantically complete over 100 solo and team-based missions that feature shooting, stealth and puzzle-based gameplay, along with the ability to interrogate captured enemies to obtain vital information. The designers have incorporated many of the series' distinctive visual and audio features, such as its innovative use of split-screen windows for simultaneous plot developments and a constant race against the 24-hour clock.

24: The Game will also be on display at this year's E3 Expo, as part of a very impressive lineup by 2K, including: Prey, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Civilization IV, Sid Meier's Pirates for the XBox and Vietcong 2 among others.

Hellogamer has an interesting post in which they compare Xbox 360 designs that never made the final cut. In a recently released Ourcolony.net video, 9 Xbox designs in total were showcased standing side-by-side, including the final take.

Pausing the recently released Ourcolony.net video at around the halfway point reveals nine different prototype versions of the Xbox 360 standing side-by-side, as well as the final design right at the end. It flashes past pretty quickly, so check out our (badly-stitched) panoramic shot for a closer look at the ones that didn’t make it.

Nintendo Revolution mockupIn a post on the Official Nintendo website, the company have tried to dismiss claims that they are loosing the next-gen console race to Microsoft and offered a sneak peak into some of the features of their next console, codenamed Revolution.

Good news for Nintendo fans, as the article claims the Revolution will indeed be backwards compatible (a feature that team Microsoft have yet to claim)

Nintendo's legions of loyal fans will be happy to learn that Revolution will be backward compatible, playing both Nintendo GameCube 8cm disks along with its own 12cm optical disks in the same self-loading media drive.

They also boast that the Revolution will be their smallest console to date, the thickness of 3 DVD cases.

In its final form, Revolution will be about the thickness of three standard DVD cases and only slightly longer. The versatile Revolution will play either horizontally or vertically, allowing the user total flexibility in setting up a gaming session wherever they have a television.

ATARIAtari has announced its first Xbox 360 endeavour in the form of Test Drive Unlimited. The next-gen racing game is being developed by Eden Games, the very same people who brought us V-Rally 3.

Although the game's release date is not yet known, Gamespot have a small write-up

The game puts a new spin on the racing genre, asking players to custom create a character at the onset of the game. After choosing facial features and some clothes, the character will head to his house, where he can check out messages from other users or download new content.

On the road, gamers can choose from a variety of cars or motorcycles (which numbers around 150) from real manufacturers such as Ducati, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin. The vehicles will burn rubber around 1000 miles of roads on the Hawaiian islands, as they compete in races or complete missions. Each car can be customized with aftermarket parts and cosmetic upgrades

STALKER Developers of the highly anticipated STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl have made available a movie showcasing one of the missions in the game.

The trailer is codenamed "The toughest enemy" and is available in a number of different resolutions.Commentary of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Project Lead/Lead Designer Andrew Prokhorov on ‘The toughest enemy' video:

The trailer shows an extract of one of the many variants of mission types from the game. The DX9 renderer is shown in all its beauty (although in the future we will show this functioning in full outdoors and in daytime). Lighting is all dynamic – even each blade of grass casts a shadow from any light source.

Combat AI is demonstrated - team actions, accurate reactions from the sounds of characters other beings, accurate reactions from the grenades as well as the AI ability to evade gun-fire and grenades, camping skills as well as ambush and group attack. We also show an example of one of the many types of anomaly that are randomly generated across the zone. This helps the gamer to understand the gameplay opportunities that they are afforded due to the nature of the anomaly, both in terms of detection and avoidance for their own survival, but also such as luring enemies into these energy disturbances for their own destruction., as well as the ultimate function of the anomaly which is to generate artefacts – the lifeblood of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The anomaly shown in the trailer is a heat anomaly – a whirling area of air tearing everything to bits.

Finally, a note on the blood sequences. As you can see when the characters take a few serious hits they leave a trail of blood. As they attempt to flee from their pursuant this trail allows gamers to track them – a note of caution to anyone who thinks they've escaped!

Bill GatesGamegossip are reporting on an article in Time magazine and also on the Time magazine website in which Microsoft CEO Bill Gates confirms that Halo 3 is in development for the Xbox 360.

The one thing that stands out however, is that the game is not due to be launched with the next-gen console, rather used as a time-bomb set to go off with the release of the Ps3.

it seems that the next Halo won't be an Xbox 360 launch title, but a title set to launch as a disruption to the PlayStation 3 launch, arriving as a second wave of titles during spring of 2006.
