PC Gamer Supreme CommanderThe August issue of PC Gamer will feature a special about Supreme Commander, the new game from TA creator Chris Taylor's Gas Powered Games.

Scans of the magazine cover show an image from the game, and the splurge "Total Annihilation Reborn! - The creator of Total Annihilation returns to re-invent the genre once again".

According to the article, the game is a year into development, though Chris Taylor is careful not to attach the Total Annihilation name to it because the property is now owned by Atari.

As such, Supreme Commander will be a new intellectual property for Gas Powered, and Taylor's first RTS game since 1997. It's being published by THQ, and is due for release on the PC next year:

Supreme Commander will sport bigger, badder robots and a cool overview tactical map. It sounds like the map will play a pretty big role in the game, according to one of my teethy moles.

In (the map), you’ll plan your empire and the outcome of the war, at the same time as directing the smaller skirmishes… with robots. It’s really big on robots.

Yuji NakaHead of the Sonic Team Yuji Naka has given his opinions of all three next-generation consoles in an interview with top Japanese gaming mag Famitsu. He doesn't side with any particular console, and points out the positive aspects of each one.

On the Playstation 3, he said, "I am very interested in the machine’s high-quality graphical capabilities. It is equipped with a graphics processor that's twice as powerful any the high-end (sic) GPU for the PC, capable of delivering a realistic experience that hasn't been possible before."

The Xbox 360 advantage he pointed out was online, "I think Microsoft has used its experience and knowledge from Xbox Live to evolve its games network, making its services and controls even more user-friendly, which I believe is a very attractive point."

As for the Revolution, he said "I look forward to the 'new kind of fun' that's always unique to Nintendo. I expect we’ll see a lot of surprises, such as the unannounced controller as well. I think it’s great that we'll be able to play Famicom and other games via Internet download. I hope that some Sega games will be playable as well."

ShadowgroundsFinnish developers Frozenbyte have announced the renaming of their upcoming PC action game from Preyground to Shadowgrounds.

The move comes as a mark of respect for 3D Realms, who apparently took issue with the similarity of the name to their resurrected sci-fi shooter Prey:

Shadowgrounds was originally known as Preyground but the name was changed
due to issues with U.S. based developer 3D Realms. "We changed the name
because 3D Realms told us that they are again working on Prey, a
first-person shooter originally announced in 1997", says Frozenbyte CEO
Lauri Hyvarinen and continues: "We respect 3D Realms. And we don't want Duke
to kick our butts."

Shadowgrounds is due for release in Q3 of this year, and according to Frozenbyte has been "developed in the Finnish woods in secrecy for almost two years."

For more about the game, check out the official site here.

Forgotten Legends of West Coast RapKotaku has happened upon a new "secret" site posted by Rockstar Games for no apparent reason. It's pretty funny but what it's promoting is beyond me - it's dedicated to forgotten West Coast rap legends and features biographies, album reviews and even .mp3 files:

You've hit the net's best stop for history on the Forgotten Legends of West Coast Rap. Living legends that were putting it down from San Fierro down to Los Santos and everywhere in between. Some of them everybody knows about, but these guys are the real players. The ones who had something to say, said it, then shut up, or got dropped by their record labels.
If you know and remember the real, then you know what's up.
And if you dont - you better ask somebody!!! Buster!!!

Project Entropia Treasure Island auctionThe Guardian Gamesblog has an interesting interview with David "Deathifier" Storey, who invested $26,500 to buy an island in the MMOG Project Entropia.

He has seen a return of $9,000 so far, and expects to reach profit by the middle of next year through a total of 60 one-off estate sales at between $450 and $550 each, and through ongoing taxation of players carrying out activities on the island:

How well has your investment returned?
Financially approximately USD$9,000 to date and we've really only just begun with the estate sales and land management, so there is still much untapped potential just in those two areas.

Aside from the financials there are intangibles such as the fame and recognition that came with the purchase in the virtual world, and the experience dealing with the various aspects of operations of the island, some of which mirror issues faced by real companies (advertising, resource acquisition, even law enforcement).

Overall the investors and myself are quite happy with progress so far, and we are still on track for full recovery and onto profit by mid next-year.

Lan ArtAn interesting concept to portray Lan gaming as art has sprung up on a website. The site has 3 pages worth of black and white photographs taken from various lans. Is it art? Who knows, a lot of drudgery gets the handle of "art" assigned it in some shape or form, or sometimes the term post-modern is attributed to what is otherwise a complete mess.

HaloSome unconfirmed rumours about Halo 3 have appeared on the forums over at Team Xbox. A poster by the name of Shaedon claims he got the info from a friend related to someone working on the title at Bungie.

They're just rumours at this stage but will be of interest to Halo fans:

My friend is not a huge fan of the series (he's a PC FPS player, although he has played both games), but he was made privy to some interesting things through his nephew. Of course, I can't confirm if they're valid or not because I'm just taking his word at face value. I will, however, let you guys take a gander at what he told me.

1) It will have a darker and more gritty story than the previous games.

2) They're attempting to maintain an online cooperative component for the campaign supporting more than two players at once.

3) It has a lot of cinematics planned for it. The opening scenes apparently occur thousands of years before the timeline of the original Halo: Combat Evolved's story.

4) It will have a multiplayer mode which pits players against bots in scenarios that are directly connected to the story of the game.

5) They're attempting to implement both a map editor and a movie maker, which would allow players to send and receive their maps/movies through Xbox Live. This would apparently be on a separate disc, and they have an entire team working just on these two projects.

6) Zanzibar, Sidewinder and Hang Em High are said to return to the multiplayer mode, completely reworked. Zanzibar will be mangled and torn apart as though after the battle, the sky will be dark red. Sidewinder will have four legs instead of just two, with bases at each end. Hang Em High will have a massive tree at its center and the structure will be deteriorated.

7) They want to support more than fifty players on Xbox Live for certain maps.

PSPAs the European release of Sony's PSP nears, one company has pledged support for the PSP movie format, UMD. Buena Vista Home Entertainment has announced itself as the first movie distributor to support the UMD format across the UK.

For the European PSP launch, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy will be sold alongside when the console launches on September 1st, although a lot more titles are promised to follow in its path.

The film, based on Douglas Adams' cult novel, stars Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent and was a hit at the box office earlier this year.

"The arrival of film on UMD is the most exciting development in the home entertainment arena since the arrival of DVD some seven years ago," Buena Vista's Julie Sneddon told The Sun.

Shigeru MiyamotoMario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that the next 3D Mario game will appear on the Nintendo Revolution and not the GameCube.

Speaking in an interview with Wired.com, he said that Mario 128, the working title for the next 3D Mario adventure, is still in the experimental stages at the moment, and the Mario team is concentrating on the Revolution as the platform for the title:

WN: But there's still no sign of the long-rumored Mario 128 for GameCube.

Miyamoto: It's still floating around. We're searching for that fundamental idea that's going to drive the next 3-D Mario game. But we're not sure when that's going to jump out at us. We're doing lots of tests with small groups.

WN: If that's the case -- if the design process is still at the point where you're doing experiments and tests -- is it even possible that Mario 128 could come out on GameCube at this point? Or is it definitely a Revolution title?

Miyamoto: We think we want it on Revolution.

WN: So, there will be no new GameCube Mario platform game.

Miyamoto: Right. The Mario team can't create too many games at the same time, so they're concentrating on the Revolution.

We also get a further idea (if we needed one) of the importance Nintendo is placing on the Revolution controller from Miyamoto; when asked about it, he said "the user interface is going to drive the Revolution software design, that's what's going to make our software stand out. Nobody else is going to be able to do what we do with next-generation game software. So, I can't reveal anything. It's under wraps because it's the big gun".

Dance Dance RevolutionIt wasn't like this when I was at school - kids in Redlands, California are to have Playstations installed in the classroom as part of the official curriculum for physical education.

To fight childhood obesity, the school district is aiming to have elementary school kids get their daily exercise through games like Dance Dance Revolution and Sony's EyeToy: Play:

"One of the things being blamed for childhood obesity is video games, so this is fighting fire with fire," said Sue Buster, the district's director of elementary education.

The proposed program would require space in the school for exertainment, with five to seven different stations capable of handling a full class of 35 children for the 50 minutes they'd ordinarily spend on the basketball court.

Xbox 360Microsoft's plans for the Xbox 360 in the Japanese market have been outlined by the chief of Xbox Japan Yoshihiro Maruyama. He has told the press that the console is due for Japanese release in December and the company hopes the early start will give an advantage over Sony and Nintendo.

It looks like Microsoft will have their work cut out for them - a recent poll by Japanese gaming mag Famitsu had post-E3 interest in the Xbox 360 at a low 18% compared to 42.2% for the Revolution, and 39.8% for Sony's PS3.
Sales of the original Xbox also trail far behind those for the PS2 and GameCube in Japan.

Despite this, Maruyama is confident:

This time, as well as launching first, we have focused on designing the machine and the games for the Japanese market. We expect to win.

Metal Gear Solid 4Creator of the Metal Gear Solid series of games Hideo Kojima has said in an interview that MGS4 is only planned for release on the PS3. He explained that the game could be ported to other consoles, but would require additional staff, resources and would drive up development costs.
He also went on to say he'd rather create original titles if he were to develop on the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Revolution.

When asked about his views of the new consoles from a developers perspective, Kojima repeated a gastro-centric comparison he made in an earlier interview:

As a developer, I see the three consoles as different kinds of meals.

The PlayStation 3 is a sumptuous feast for special occasions; the Xbox 360 is a fine Sunday dinner; and the Revolution is a rich, home-cooked supper.

Black & White 2Some news coming in from Lionhead Studios website. The highly anticipated sequel to Black & White has hit alpha stage. Not exactly anything to sing and dance about, but it does mean that the game is at a much more stable development position and before long it should reach its beta (now if only they would make that a public-beta).

Will you be an evil or benevolent deity?

That's the choice you must make upon returning to a warring land in Black & White 2. Like its wildly successful predecessor, Black & White, the sequel is all about moral choices.

The land, however, has transformed itself. The inhabitants of this breathtaking 3D world have lost their innocence and developed new weapons and technology. As you enter this warring world, will you make tribes coexist peacefully; encouraging villages and towns to grow into sprawling metropolises, or prompt them to inflict their will upon others by, creating and commanding large armies that seek to dominate and conquer?

XBox 360Over the past few months, we have heard very little other than Xbox 360 and PS3 bashing and counter-bashing dished out by Microsoft and Sony. Hands have gotten quite dirty, but it never really brought potential buyers any closer to the reality of the next-gen consoles and their performance attributes.

XBox 360An interesting article over on C|NET looks at Microsoft's current position in the digital music industry, which is pretty much Apple-town as far as dominance is concerned. However, Senior Vice President, Robbie Bach, who is a 16 year MS veteran and behind some of Redmond's most successful endeavours, is reportedly looking at ways to include the Xbox 360 in repositioning Microsoft in the digital music market.

With little sign that Apple Computer's digital music dominance is on the wane, Microsoft's top Xbox executive is helping to look at ways to refocus the software company's music strategy.

I think given the Xbox business, and how music plays into it, it was a natural thing to have Robbie think of that," said Tom Pilla, a Microsoft spokesman. "But that's really happening through the lens of the existing leadership team.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Rockstar's recently released PC and Xbox version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has been making its presence felt in the UK software charts ever since the its release on June 10th. San Andreas has knocked out heavy-weight, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, which has fallen to the number 2 position.

Ever since its release to PS2 last year, the game has flourished with one of the biggest opening weeks of all time for a videogame. The Xbox launch of San Andreas has not fallen far short of its PS2 brother by entering the record books as the largest Xbox launch week ever in the UK after last November's Halo 2.

No other new releases make it into the top ten this week, although Vivendi Universal Games' Cold Winter - developed by UK studio Swordfish, which VU Games is thought to be on the verge of acquiring - climbs ten places to number nine, while NCSoft's critically acclaimed massively multiplayer title Guild Wars is up five places to number ten.

SETIWired News is running an article based around the question of whether distributed computing could be used on the next-generation consoles. After all, these systems are going to have some serious power under the lid that is not going to be used when the system is idle, so why not use them for projects like Folding@Home or SETI?:

Imagine the possibilities of millions of gaming consoles (Sony has sold more than 70 million PlayStation 2s) contributing to a community previously limited to thousands of capable processors.

How might we end up with a distributed computing client in our gaming systems? Making the client available on disc is the least intrusive means, but it will only target a subset of gaming system owners who go out of their way to get it, along with bearing the cost to produce the discs. A better method of delivery to the consumer would be to build the client as an update to firmware. As an optional update, users would be presented with an offer to install an approved distributed client of their choice into their system anytime they performed a critical system update over the internet.

So, let my console fold proteins or search for E.T. when I'm not using it. Let the public take a larger role in innovative research efforts. Most importantly, let me be able to end any console debate with, "So what if your system lets you watch movies and TV, listen to music and play games? My system cures cancer."

Nintendo RevolutionWhile Microsoft and Sony have pledged big support for high-definition television with the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, Nintendo have officially stated it won't be a feature of the Revolution.

The main reason cited by Nintendo USA's Perrin Kaplan was that HD support at this time would drive up the price of games, while she also questioned whether it would improve games to have the feature:

Nintendo doesn't plan for the system to be HD compatible as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game.

Will it make the game better to play? With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD.

Press the Buttons are reporting on a fan-made Super Mario game, that comprises elements of Super Mario World and Super Mario Sunshine. The game is called Super Mario Pac and was created by HermitGames (without permission from Nintendo).

Super Mario fans are urged to download this one while they still can, as this good old infringing fun will more than likely not last if Nintendo has anything to say about it.

Created by HermitGames without permission from Nintendo, Super Mario Pac puts players in control of classic 2D Mario. Equipped with the FLUDD water pack, Mario must collect pieces of a warp pipe, assemble them, and then exterminate the Piranha Plant living inside. FLUDD functions as both a jetpack and a weapon, and when the water supply runs dry Mario must get a refill at the local water hole. Download this one while you can; Nintendo will probably unleash the lawyers sooner than later, and it's definitely a keeper.

Alan WakeRemedy have given some more info about their next game Alan Wake in a new Q&A.

The questions were submitted by forum members on AlanWake.net, and cover some topics of interest such as whether Max Payne fans will feel at home with Alan Wake and why multiplayer has been excluded from the game:

One of the things that many people asked for in the Max Payne series was Multiplayer. What was the reason for excluding it in Alan Wake? How will you be able to tackle replay issues?

Sam Lake: Just as we did with the Max Payne games, we are concentrating on building the best possible single player experience. For a small company, it’s very logical and necessary to concentrate on doing one thing really well, instead of dividing your resources. Also, the story is an important part of Alan Wake, and that is something that doesn’t translate well to a multiplayer game.

We have all kinds of ideas related to replayability, but we want to prototype them further before we’ll talk about them.

Alan Wake is planned for PC and next-generation consoles, though no release date has been confirmed as yet.

XBox 360In a bid to bring Blizzard's World of Warcraft to the Xbox 360, Microsoft contacted Blizzard with an offer to have the game ported to their next-gen console.

Although Blizzard has reportedly turned them down, they did not rule out the possibility of such a move in the foreseeable future.

"We've been in contact with Microsoft...," said Paul Sams, vice president of business operations at Blizzard. "World of Warcraft was really built with a focus on PC, and while I think it certainly could get to Xbox, it's not something that at this moment we've decided to do."

Resident Evil The fifth title in the Resident Evil series was announced back in March by the series producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, but at that time he said "as for exactly what it will be like... that's something we're busy thinking about right now".

Capcom might have been stuck for a few ideas, so they've opened a new thread in their official forum asking fans what they would most like to see in the next instalment:

Real-life Arcade GameThis is one of the most disturbing Derren Brown clips I've seen -
he takes some random guy playing an arcade game in a boozer, sends him into a catatonic trance and carries him into a room designed to look like the game he had just been playing, then wakes him up.

Actors lurch towards him like zombies and, utterly freaked out, he starts shooting them as if he's inside the game.

The most amazing thing is the guy's friends play along without saying a word, though you can see from their expressions they're a bit uneasy.

Risk Your Life: Path of The EmperorPlanetwide Games have announced they will release the final version of Risk Your Life: Path of the Emperor to 8100 retail outlets across the U.S and Canada on 21 June.

The game has been available to pre-order for two months from EB Games, GameStop, Best Buy and Fry's, and those who pre-ordered will also get a unique virtual item when they receive their final version copy on 21 June.

Online players got to try out the final version early - over the past two days a patch was rolled out that applied the changes seen in the final version.

All of the changes applied are listed below:

CHANGES:
1. Whenever a player dies from a monster, they will loose some exp. The player will also loose 20% of durability of all gear that the player is wearing. Whenever any player respawns with a resurrection, they will not loose any durability.
2. When a player chooses to respawn in town, HP/MP will be at 25% with G-mode on.
3. When a player respawns with the resurrection skill, HP/MP will be at 75% with No G-mode.

Mining ability is set to the same time as Seige Time.

8. Pure nationality's HP / MP Max is 5% higher than god's pirate.

World of WarcraftWorld of Warcraft has surpassed expectations on all sides and now finds itself with 2 million subscribers worldwide, according to Blizzard. This places WoW among the largest online games in the world, only bowing out to the massively popular Lineage.

The 2 million figures are based on subscriptions in North America, Europe and south Korea, but Blizzard does not seem content to expect no more growth. With the game's release in China early this month, those numbers are expected to rise significantly, perhaps even out-gunning Lineage in the record books.

Figures from the public beta of the game in China showed up to 500,000 players using the servers concurrently, with six-figure queues to enter the game - numbers which come close to rivalling the peak concurrency in all three other territories combined.

Nintendo Revolution Controller

Gizmodo have the latest unofficial image of the Nintendo Revolution controller to hit the 'Net, though it's pretty doubtful this is real. It's wireless and includes a mic, a haptic tactile touch screen (check here for a related rumour) and an indicator for how much charge is left.

No official details have been released by Nintendo themselves about the controller - all we've been told so far is that 1) the controller is still being designed, and 2) that it will be "very unique" and will surprise everyone.

Mount EverestKotaku has an interview with Neal Mueller and Chris Grubb, two Mount Everest climbers who brought their Nintendo DS's along for some entertainment on the slopes.

Of all their electronic equipment, the DS withstood the high altitudes the best:

...we had a Dell computer that got fried, a Polytechnic screen that went out… we had three of the four MP3 players go bad….but the Nintendo DS units keep hanging in there…

And it was the Nintendo DS units that suffered the worst of it - they were constantly with us in our tents which were moist and cold… the were right there in our packs so they suffered a lot of wind blasts, they were dropped…

And the Sherpas would beat the (heck) out of them - they’d play with them in the kitchen where curry would get split on them, all these incredibly hot spices… and they kept on performing…

Hello PSP!The PSP firmware version 1.5 has apparently been hacked, according to a group called PsP-Dev who say they plan to release the method used in tutorial form tomorrow at 5PM GMT (12PM EST).

If genuine, the hack will make widespread piracy on the PSP much more accessible, though the only evidence so far that PsP-Dev have actually cracked version 1.5 is a video file released a couple of days ago:

A video file released to a Web site for PlayStation Portable independent developers, appears to show an independently developed "Hello, World" test application running from memory stick, on a newer model PSP with firmware version 1.5.

Security provisions built into v. 1.5 by its manufacturer, Sony, are supposed to thwart the ability of the system to execute unencrypted binaries from its Memory Stick PRO Duo, as opposed to its local UMD small-size optical disc. If the video is indeed accurate, a small but devoted group of system crackers may be one step closer to their goal of devising an underground distribution system for cracked games.

Chris Gilbert, a professional PlayStation 2 game developer and noted member of the legitimate (non-pirate) homebrew development community, believes this development means "the ability to potentially run pirated software becomes significantly more widespread due to the largest portion of PSPs worldwide now being vulnerable to the exploit." Up until now, only very early versions of PSP that were only released in Japan, could be modified to run programs from memory stick.

Ken KutaragiKen Kutaragi has said in a new interview that the Playstation 3 may come with Linux preinstalled on the machine's hard drive and mentioned photo and video editing as possible functions for the OS.

The new focus on operating systems is part of the company's positioning of the PS3 as a supercomputer rather than just a games console or toy, which is how he describes the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution.

Going further, he also claimed that the PS3 will be able to run multiple OSes, mentioning Windows, Mac OS and Lindows.

Another interesting thing mentioned in the interview is the possibility of a new operating system: "The kernel will be running on the Cell, and multiple OSes will be running on top of that as applications. Of course, the PS3 can run Linux. If Linux can run, so can Lindows. Other PC Operating Systems can run too, such as Windows and (Mac OS) Tiger, if the publishers want to do so. Maybe a new OS might come out".

Gamesindustry.biz speculate the new OS could be a Linux-based system that Sony is rumoured to be working on as a potential Windows competitor.

Jonathan HayesXbox.com discuss the industrial design guru behind the Xbox 360 case Jonathan Hayes, while examining each individual principle behind the design of Microsoft's next-gen console. Hayes himself, grew up in Boston and the coast of Maine where he has been both sculpting and painting his whole life, he also has a masters degree in Industrial Design.

When asked about the Xbox 360 design, Hayes said "We wanted to create the icon for the next generation of gaming".

Hayes goes on to explain that the Xbox 360's design values were laid out as the acronym OCCAM, after Occam's Razor.

Open
The gamer is at the center of the experience. The design enables partners to succeed and allows for customization.

Clear

Nothing is more difficult than it has to be. This should be true for hardware, software, services, and the spaces in between.

Consistent
A consistent experience integrated across design, branding, hardware, software, and services.

Athletic

The efficient use of power. Jonathan used this example: "Michael Jordan doesn't have any more muscle mass in his legs than the other guys on the basketball court. How does he jump like that? It's efficiency, not raw power."

Mirai
The Japanese word for "future," mirai (pronounced meer-EYE) expresses the goal of forward-looking, exhilarating, innovative design.

Ken KutaragiAccording to an article over at Game Daily Biz, Sony President Ken Katuragi has explained in detail just how they will be working in backwards compatibility with their Playstation 3 console. According the Kutaragi, a combination of hardware and software will make it possible to play PS2 and indeed PS1 games on the PS3 which is expected to launch in Spring of 2006.

The Sony Boss also took time out to launch another attack on team Xbox 360.

The current Xbox will become antiquated once the new machine comes out this November. When that happens, the Xbox will be killing itself. The only way to avoid that is to support 100 percent compatibility from its [Xbox 360's] launch date, but Microsoft won't be able to commit to that. It's technically difficult.

HDR, wtf? -   Email to a friend

HDRSo you've heard over and over again that Valve will be implementing their new HDR lighting technology in the upcoming Half Life 2 expansion, Aftermath. You have caught screenshots of the new technology and it looks great, but what exactly does HDR mean and what will it bring to the existing Source gaming engine?

For a more detailed explanation of HDR (or High Dynamic Range), bit-rech.com have interviewed Valve's Doug Lombardi where they take an in-depth look at the technology and even compare screenshots in HDR to real life images in order to get a better idea of what to expect.

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and is also sometimes referred to as High Dynamic Range Imagery (HDRI) or High Dynamic Range Rendering (HDRR). The Dynamic Range is the ratio of the largest value of a signal to the lowest measurable value. Current 16-bit integer-based formats use colour component values from 0 ("black") to 1 ("white"), but don't allow for what is known as "over-range" values, for example, a whiter-than-white highlight glinting off a piece of metal.

HDR facilitates the use of colour values way outside the normal range in an effort to produce a more realistic rendering of a typical 3D scene. If you have ever driven through a dark tunnel in your car, and then emerged out the other side into blazing sunshine, temporarily blinded by the difference in light levels - that oversaturation is one example of what is possible with HDR

Mr. & Mrs. SmithMr. & Mrs. Smith, this year's action comedy starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie has found its way to the mobile game's world. The game itself is based around the events in the film, which involve an assassin husband and wife, hired to kill one another.

Gamespot has a review of the game in which they look at the finer detail.

Glu Mobile has had no small amount of experience with movie-licensed games, and it has chosen the right components of the film to focus on in Mr. & Mrs. Smith: You snipe at enemy agents with high-powered firearms, while Pitt and Angelina Jolie snipe at each other with one-liners. This shooting-gallery game's design works well and is engaging, but it isn't backed up with enough content to be anything more than a quick novelty.

With the expanded opportunities like Xbox 360 it was natural to want to include the BraveTree team. XBox 360Ever since Microsoft showcased their shiny new Xbox at E3 this year, one of the talking points has been speculation as to what games will be ready for the launch, and how many.

Some fresh rumour coming in this morning from Japan's most respected games magazine, Famitsu. While MS are not giving anything away, Munetatsu Matsui, editor-in-chief of Famitsu Xbox is suggesting there will be 20 games ready for the console's launch. Of course it is merely rumour at this point but if they did come up with 20 titles for November, it would be pretty impressive and certainly drag a lot of people in that might have been reluctant to get on board train Xbox 360.

That's rather more than we've been expecting, frankly, and rather a lot for a publisher planning to launch a new console in three different territories on the same day, you might think...

We contacted Microsoft to ask if Munetatsu's estimate was correct, and a representative told us: "We're not discussing day one titles at this time."

World of Warcraft Imagine you had just launched the most successful massively multiplayer online role-playing game so far (as far-fetched as that notion might be), you'd probably lean back and tackle things somewhat more placidly - at least for a while. Not so Blizzard. After WoW's release in the US, Europe, Korea and most recently China, Blizzard do feel happy about staggering sales figures and international critical acclaim, but they know that they have still some way to go. As Paul Sams, Blizzard's vice president of business operations, puts it in a comprehensive interview with GamesIndustry.biz:

We've done it pretty well in some respects, and in other respects we've gotten our bumps and bruises - but I think that many of the challenges that we've faced are things that have been solved, or are in the process of being solved, or we now know how to solve them. [...]

I think we've done a relatively good job. We want to do better than we have; we have plans and aspirations and goals to be much better than we already are. I think that we've done a pretty decent job, but I would also say that Blizzard has the desire to be the best in class in the service that we provide and the overall experience.

Sams also talks about the first turbulent days in the wake of WoW's release, gives some hints about Blizzard's future plans for the game (they might have an add-on up their sleeves), and elaborates on Starcraft: Ghost. Unsurprisingly, however, Sams doesn't reveal anything about upcoming projects, but the community should be content with WoW for the time being anyway.

Call of Duty 2

Activision gradually reveals more and more visuals of Infinity Ward's upcoming WWII shooter, Call of Duty 2 (check out both new screens here). The level of detail is awesome, giving you a faint idea of what to expect in the final game in terms of atmosphere. Although a series of WWII shooters have saturated the market ever since Medal of Honor made its appearance, Call of Duty 2, slated for a release this fall, looks promising nonetheless.

Medal of Honor: European AssaultSources close to Electronic Arts LA have revealed to Gamespot that the next Medal of Honor game is tentatively titled Medal of Honor: Airborne, and will be one of the launch titles for the Playstation 3.

The sources claim the game has been in development for the past six months, though they didn't mention versions for any other consoles.

When asked, EA LA themselves didn't deny the rumour, but didn't offer further information except to say "Gamers can assume that EA is excited to bring the coolest content to the latest platforms.
We have an amazingly creative development team down here and they are eager to show gamers just how far they take the next-generation of consoles."

Playstation 3Ken Kutaragi has said in an interview that over 100 development kits for the Playstation 3 have been sent out to games publishers so far, but because of a shortage of parts for the kits, the company won't be able to manufacture enough to meet demand.

The kits sent out by the company so far have gone to publishers in the U.S., Japan and Europe, with some developers like Epic Games receiving theirs as long ago as March.

I had presumed a shortage of these kits would cause a subsequent shortage of games for the launch of the console, but Gamesradar explains why this probably won't happen:

This scenario really isn't unusual - most recently Sony had trouble supplying enough PSP dev-kits - and developers can simply navigate around the problem by working according to the console's specifications on high-end PCs.

Nintendo RevolutionA detailed list of specifications for the Nintendo Revolution have appeared in the blogosphere - it should go without saying that the list should be taken with a healthy dose of salt until Nintendo officially release their specs:

Cell ChipApple's ditching of IBM for Intel is big news these days, but another interesting snippet of information is included in a recent NY Times article - SCE boss Ken Kutaragi personally tried to sell Steve Jobs on using the Cell chip in the next generation of Macs back in 2004, but the Apple chief turned the offer down because he was disappointed with the design of the chip:

As it happens, Intel's was not the only alternative chip design that Apple had explored for the Mac. An executive close to Sony said that last year Jobs met in California with both Nobuyuki Idei, then the chairman and chief executive of the Japanese consumer electronics firm, and with Kenichi Kutaragi, the creator of the Sony PlayStation.

Kutaragi tried to interest Jobs in adopting the Cell chip, which is being developed by IBM for use in the coming PlayStation 3, in exchange for access to certain Sony technologies. Jobs rejected the idea, telling Kutaragi that he was disappointed with the Cell design, which he believes will be even less effective than the PowerPC.

GTA: Liberty Ciy StoriesThe first official details of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories have been revealed in the latest issue of the U.K. Official Playstation 2 Magazine.

The magazine is out 16 June and includes an exclusive first look at the game, in the meantime however, ComputerandVideoGames.com has a run-through of the key details:

As given away by the title, Liberty City Stories is set in the New York-themed metropolis that formed the backdrop for GTA III. The timeframe is approximately three years earlier than the action of GTA III (around 1998 by Rockstar's estimation).

You play Tony Cipriani, an up-and-coming mafia big gun who's just returned to the city. The GTA fanboys amongst you will remember him from GTA III - he was the chubby Tony Soprano-esque mobster operating out of the bistro in St Marks.

While the city remains largely unchanged, Rockstar has altered everything slightly to make it look slightly earlier. Familiar locations will be littered across the city, making exploration feel like a fun return to the past for veterans of the series. Even the motors will look slightly different to reflect the late-90s timeframe.

Girls and GamingAn interesting article over at The Game Chair raises that old 'girls and games' argument. Interesting is the perspective from the writer who is both a gamer and a girl who believes that attempts at pleasing and appealing to girl gamers today is just 'barking up the wrong bush'.

I think the point here is that while the game industry should be concerned about trying to increase the number of female gamers (and retaining the ones that are already fans) - the 18-35 year old male demographic that everyone talks about is not going to be able to support the industry forever - the way to do this is not to focus on the development of a mythic “game for women. The industry needs to focus on developing games that are innovative, genre-crossing, and mold breaking. By doing that, they will be creating games that appeal to a cross-section of gaming demographics - perhaps attracting current players to new genres, people new to gaming, and so on. By expanding options for all of us, the game industry can expand their appeal to women - not by marketing directly to women through a specific type or formula of game, but by giving every single one of us, regardless of gender, more options to pick and choose from.

Garry's ModA new version of the immensely popular Garry's Mod for Half Life 2 has been released. This build fixes a bad compile from the previous release.

Garry's mod is a physics manipulator mod that allows you to spawn a world of Half Life 2 characters in any scenario from the game and stage pretty much anything you like by manipulating whatever aspect of people and machinery you desire.

Hah! Bet you didn't see this coming. Jesus what an awful release. I know a lot of you want to believe it was all down to my shit coding but it wasn't - it was all down to me not testing the mod before I uploaded it. For the most part it was a bad compile.

Anyway - here's what's fixed in this update.

  • [FIX] Blurry menu icons (thanks to Bucketmuncher)
  • [FIX] Ghost guide single player crash
  • [FIX] Weird Physics
  • [FIX] Model randomised every spawn
  • [FIX] Level transitions crapping out in multiplayer
  • [FIX] Killed 3D menu background

XBoxIn an embarrassing chain of events, Microsoft has had to once again re-issue new power chords for early versions of its Xbox console. Redmond already had to issue new power-cables earlier this year due to safety issues, but it turns out even earlier models have suffered the same fate and they too need to have their power-cables replaced.

Microsoft claim that in about twenty cases the power-chord has caused damage to a carpet or the Xbox itself.

"We have recently determined that in the UK and Republic of Ireland a small number of consoles manufactured between October 23, 2003 and January 14, 2005, require a new replacement cord as well," read Bach's apologetic letter. The power cable can be replaced by registering on Xbox.com for a new one, or by calling 0800 0289276. It is unclear whether other PAL regions are effected by this ongoing danger, but we'll keep you posted. New cables should take two to four weeks to be delivered, and gamers should keep their console unplugged whilst not in use in the meantime. More soon.

XBox 360Latest claims in the harsh and bloody next-gen console wars comes from the side of Microsoft. One of ATI's Leading graphical designers Richard Huddy in a recent interview has said that despite the PS3 taking home 1st prize in specification, it will be beaten graphically by the Xbox 360.

Huddy claims the that although ATI's Xenos hardware is 50 Mhz slower on paper than Nvidia's RSX engine, the 'unified shader architecture' of his creation would be the deciding factor in the graphics race and ultimately give Microsoft the edge.

That mere 10 per cent clock speed that RSX has on Xenos is easily countered by the unified shader architecture that we've implemented," he stated in the interview with a technology site. "Rather than separate pixel and vertex pipelines, we've created a single unified pipeline that can do both.

Providing developers throw instructions at our architecture in the right way, Xenos can run at 100 per cent efficiency all the time, rather than having some pipeline instructions waiting for others," the expert explained. "For comparison, most high-end PC chips run at 50-60% typical efficiency. The super cool point is that 'in the right way' just means 'give us plenty of work to do'. The hardware manages itself.
