P-TV/Portable TVAn image of the new TV show download service for the PSP has surfaced on the Web.
The image comes from a slide shown at the Annual PlayStation Meeting and reveals the service will be named P-TV, or Portable TV.

No details on pricing have been announced, though we do know the service is due to be launched with the update to version 2.0 of the PSP software next week. The 2.0 update will feature the official Web browser for PSP, the ability to share photos wirelessly between two PSP's, and is likely to patch the console against recent hacks that have caused a piracy worry for Sony.

GTA: San AndreasRockstar Games have made a u-turn from their earlier position and are now admitting that the sex scenes found in GTA: San Andreas were indeed created by Rockstar programmers.

The company had rather sneakily blamed the content on the creator of the Hot Coffee mod when the ESRB were investigating the game.

The modder in question insisted from the start that the content was Rockstar's, and eventually the ESRB punished the company by handing the game an Adult Only rating, which is expected to seriously impact sales:

[Rockstar's parent company]Take-Two spokesman Jim Ankner acknowledged in an Associated Press interview that the questioned scenes were created by Rockstar programmers. "The editing and finalization of any game is a complicated task and it's not uncommon for unused and unfinished content to remain on the disc," he said.

XBox 360The Xbox 360 will be the first games console to come with parental controls built-in, according to a report from Mainichi Shinbun, which echoes an earlier story from The Sun newspaper.

The console will apparently be able to read the rating of a game DVD when it's loaded, and lock users from playing those that carry an inappropriate rating. In addition, the 360 will be programmable to allow parents to restrict access to online chatrooms:

The age restrictions on the console follow the four categories classified by the Computer Entertainment Rating Organization -- age 12 and up, age 15 and up, and age 18 and up, and all ages.

In addition to being able to restrict the viewing of DVD software, the Xbox 360 can also be programmed in advance to control access to voice-chat sites.

Restrictions will also reportedly be introduced in consoles in Europe and the United States to match specific areas.

Playstation 3The Annual Playstation Meeting Sony holds every year is usually much more sober and business oriented than say, the glitzy E3 extravaganza back in May.

But Sony used this year's APM to make some very cool announcements for gamers: the new PSP browser, the licensing of Unreal 3 and other top tools like Havok for PS3 devs.

An under-reported aspect of the meeting though is that a bunch of PS3 games were revealed, and the very first playable demo of a Playstation 3 game was shown.

PSINext has a handy round-up of the highlights, including a full list of the PS3 games featured or demoed:

The complete list of PLAYSTATION 3 games featured and demo'd at this years Playstation Meeting were:

*Gundam, by Bandai - The PLAYSTATION 3's first playable demo; in early stages and not yet utilizing any of the Cell's seven SPE's or Sony's provided SDK middleware

*Genji, by Sony Computer Entertainment/Game Republic - Concept CG from the PS3 sequel to the popular PS2 series

*Resident Evil 5, by Capcom - Real-time game trailer for the upcoming sequel to the cult-classic horror series - view trailer

*Ni-Oh, by Koei - Game based in 16th century feudal Japan - demo featured real-time action; Koei let it be known that the character models on screen were comprised of 150,000 polygons

*Endless Saga, by Webzen - New PS3 RPG title revealed by acclaimed Korean developer Webzen

*Lair, by Factor 5 - Featuring what sometimes seemed like a hundred highly detailed dragon models on screen at a time, Factor 5's demo utilized nothing but in-game footage

*Project Force, by From Software - Mech-based action title in the early development stages, but very impressively featuring fully destructible environments

Playstation 3 controllerHot on the heels of their announcement of an upcoming MMOG for the Xbox 360, Webzen has revealed they will also publish an online game for the rival Playstation 3.

Called Endless Saga, the game is also being developed for PC, and Webzen expect a release in 2007. Very little other information is available about the game, though it's described as a "fantasy game".

The new game was announced at the Annual Playstation Meeting which recently took place in Japan, and attendees glimpsed screenshots and a movie trailer, though these have not yet been released for download by Webzen.

Hillary ClintonFormer First Lady Hillary Clinton has issued a statement praising the ESRB for handing down an AO (Adults Only) rating to Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, saying she is "glad" the organisation have gotten to the bottom of the issue.

She's never been a fan of Grand Theft Auto or Rockstar Games, and in the statement refers to them only as "the company" who "gamed the ratings system and enabled pornographic material to get into the hands of children."

She also puts pressure on "the company" to fulfil its pledge to pull the game off shelves, and suggests they allow parents to get a refund if they return the game:

So many parents already feel like they are fighting a battle against violence and sexually explicit material with their hands tied behind their backs. We need companies to be responsible and we need rating systems that work.

While I applaud the ESRB for its quick and thorough investigation, I urge the ESRB to redouble its efforts to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again and that games already reviewed do not have the same vulnerabilities.

5 to LifeIt seems the bad rap games have gotten over the past few months has angered gamers and games writers alike, after Wednesday's decision to rate Rockstar's San Andreas as 'Adult only', many people have just had enough.

One game which is as much under the radar as any, 25 to Life now has its very own petition and video game lovers the world over are encouraged to sign the petition to show support for Eidos (the company behind the game) but it's much bigger than that. This petition will represent the overall voice of the gaming community, who have grown weary of politicians falling back to blame games for just about every nut-case under the sun who may or may not have played a video game in his or her lifetime.

We the people are tired of the government's ignorance. We the people are tired of the government blaming video games for the actions of sick people. We the people want politicians (and everybody else) to remember we live in America, the home of free speech and free enterprise.

Xbox LiveXbox live commands over 2 million users, with a new user signing up for online play every 30 seconds, according to a new article. A pretty staggering number, considering it's over half the population of my country (yikes!) Think of the power, Microsoft could use subliminal messages encouraging their unholy army to go out at night and commit certain 'deeds'. Perhaps track down Ken Kutaragi and 'put him on ice', or better yet, hunt down Apple CEO Steve Jobs and break his legs...such potential.

In the time it takes you to read this story, someone has signed up for Xbox live. (Unless you read exceptionally fast, in which case you are on your own.) This is largely a fluff piece pimping Xbox Live, but it gives a look at what can be expected when Xbox 360 appears later this year, and the pay service is revamped for the new system.

Ken KutaragiSome PSP details were posted up in a short article over on biz.yahoo.com, but more importantly, some more Kutaragi banter in the form of PS3 pricing. The Sony heavy-weight did not give way any concrete details about pricing, he did however stress that the Playstation 3 'will be expensive'.

The announcements were made during a Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. strategy event which also showcased several games for the company's PlayStation 3 console, which hits store shelves next spring and is expected to compete with new hardware from rivals Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co.

No PS3 price has been announced, but "it will be expensive," Kutaragi said.

Hot CoffeeGameCloud has a nice write-up examining the current state of the gaming industry, particularly after Wednesday's decision by the ESRB to brand the highly popular Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with an AO (Adults only) rating.

You can find reaction from games developers on the issue, including id CEO Todd Hollenshead:

I preface my comments by saying all I know is what I've read about the situation. I don't own and haven't played GTA: SA and haven't tried the so-called "hot coffee" mod or even seen it.

The ESRB has the power and the responsibility to rate games based on the content shipped with the game. Publishers and developers have a responsibility to be honest about that content so that games can be accurately rated based on their content. The problem in this particular situation is that a dispute apparently exists as to whether the "hot coffee" mod content was included with the game or whether it was added or enabled only with the use of unauthorized third party software and/or hardware.

Mario 2Slashdot links to an interesting article over on Push the Buttons. The site examines the 'best of' and indeed the 'worst of' in terms of Nintendo box art over the years. All your old favourites are there, from Mario Brothers 2 to Duckhunt all the way up to Super Nintendo's Mega Man X.

GameSpy ran two features last year that rate the top ten best and worst video game box arts of all time. Well, in their eyes, at least. A lot of what you'd expect to find in such an article is there (The Legend of Zelda is one of the best, while Mega Man is listed as the worst), but I still found both features lacking. Here are a few of my picks for best and worst box art of all time... or, at least, in recent memory of games I've bought over the years. Anyone can point to pictures online and say "That sucks!" but it takes guts to have purchased some of these godawful boxes.

Ps3Sony has entered into a licensing agreement with Epic Games to use the awesome Unreal 3 engine for Playstation 3. PS3 software development kits are now expected to ship with an evaluation version of he ground-breaking engine.

As outlined in their joint statement, the deal has Sony "sublicensing rights of Unreal Engine 3, a complete games development framework developed by Epic Games." By "complete," Epic means that the engine "includes a programmable shaders tool, physics engine, and GUI [Graphic User Interface] based physics attribution tool, along with various other tools, such as scenario development, movie scene development, animation and particle animation tools."

There is also speculation now that Unreal Tournament 2007, already in development for the PC, will be ported over to the PS3 sometime next year.

PSPSony have announced a major upgrade to the PSP software is on the way that will include an official Web browser for the device, the ability to share photos wirelessly between two PSP's and a service to download TV programs.

The version 2.0 update is due to be released next week, and it's likely it will also include a patch to disable some recent hacks that allowed the running of unofficial code on the PSP.

The official PSP browser will support an older version of HTML (4.01) than regular browsers, but most sites will display properly with it. A new portal site for the PSP that will offer TV programs for download is also planned, though no details on the pricing scheme for the programs have been released.

The company also announced a white version of the PSP is to be released on the 15th of September, but it will only go on sale in Japan.

Resident Evil 5/BioHaZaRD 5The first trailer for Resident Evil 5 has been released, after Capcom revealed yesterday that the game is heading for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 - surprisingly, no mention of a version for Nintendo Revolution was made in the announcement.

The first news of the game hit with an exclusive feature in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, which included an image of a character that looked very much like Chris Redfield, the star of the original game in the series.

The trailer shows (presumably) Redfield being menaced by a group of zombies before fading to black with the slogan "BioHaZaRD 5".

Ken KutaragiKen Kutaragi has been reaffirming his stance that the Playstation 3 will be much more than just a games console. In an interview with Electronic Engineering Times Asia, the 'Father of Playstation' said that although the PS3 will be sold as a game console, what will in fact enter the home is a 'Cell-based computer'.

He continued 'The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: servers around the world form one virtual 'computer,' and each PC accesses it. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. The Cell processor will completely change the concept of programming. I am sure that a technology revolution is about to occur, not only within Sony but throughout the digital consumer electronics industry."”

XBox 360Microsoft has made it clear before that success in Japan with the Xbox 360 was one of their most important undertakings with the launch of the next-gen console. Well, it turns out they may have a difficult time realizing this goal as rumours circulate the 'net of a possible shortage in Japan.

The console was slated for launch in Japan in November of this year, but reports coming in from Ferrago suggest a new Japanese release date of March 2006, which would pit Bill's new Xbox with Kutaragi's PS3 which is due out in Spring of next year.

This news reportedly comes from a Redmond insider who let the delay slip, however in uncharacteristic fashion, Microsoft have commented on this speculation - stating that the Xbox 360 "remains on track for each territory," referring to the Christmas 2005 launch period revealed at E3 in May. This could all be cods-wallop, then, but Microsoft's task is not an undaunting one: analysts are already stating that the Xbox 360 could be the biggest and most ambitious consumer launch ever - eclipsing Windows 95 in scale and significance. More as we get it, then.

WoW PornOk, I think we've heard as much as we need to concerning GTA's 'Hot Coffee' sex mod. You can bet we'll hear more from politicians, religious groups and many prudes over the coming months.

So for those bored with Hot Coffee and looking for an alternative, look no further as we now have a smutty World of Warcraft video to entertain and offend alike, featuring naked elves and such.

Now that we'’ve finally had a chance to see that hidden hardcore action in '“Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas'”, we'’re grateful to a reader for turning us on to a considerably tamer nude mod available for War of Warcraft, —although we understand that not everyone is as curious and/or desperate as we are to sit through a twenty minute download just to catch a glimpse of a few naked female characters doing the Macarena and some simulated oral sex. Grand Theft Auto: San AndreasThe ESRB has delivered the result of its investigation into Hot Coffee, the mod that enables sex mini-games in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The organisation has come to the conclusion that the current Mature rating for the game is not enough, and have handed the game a damaging AO (Adults Only) rating.

The result is expected to have such a negative impact on sales of the game that publisher Take-Two has been forced to readjust its expected earnings for the year because of the move.

Rockstar plan to cease manufacturing the current version of the game and issue a patch that disables Hot Coffee. They also plan to release a new version of the game that will disable the mod; that version is expected for release in the fourth quarter of this year, and will retain the original Mature rating given by the ESRB.

Rockstar had previously denied the content enabled with Hot Coffee was put in the game by them, but their claim was undermined by independent tests that found the content was present in the Playstation 2 version of the game, which comes on a DVD that cannot have unofficial content added to it.

Rockstar stuck to their guns in the press release announcing the ESRB decision, blaming the new rating on the creators of third-party mods; they also mention legal action might be an option for them against companies that profit from tools that alter the content of the game:

The ESRB's decision to re-rate a game based on an unauthorized third party modification presents a new challenge for parents, the interactive entertainment industry and anyone who distributes or consumes digital content.

[...]
The scenes depicted in the "hot coffee" modification are not playable in the retail version of the game unless the user downloads and/or installs unauthorized software that alters the content of the original retail version of the title, representing a violation of Take-Two and Rockstar's end user license agreement (EULA) and intellectual property rights. "We are deeply concerned that the publicity surrounding these unauthorized modifications has caused the game to be misrepresented to the public and has detracted from the creative merits of this award winning product," said Mr. Eibeler. Take-Two is exploring its legal options as it relates to companies that profited from creating and distributing tools for altering the content of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

CheaterIt appears that Bungie are executing an all out assault on cheaters later today with the release of Autoupdate 4 for Halo 2. The update is mainly focused on fixing cheating exploits for people playing the game via Xbox Live.

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 20th of July, we will release Autoupdate 4. This is a small file that updates your version of Halo 2 to address various issues. It only takes a moment to download the file, but it is required for continued play on Xbox Live. If you do not wish to download the file, that is your choice, however, you will not be able to play Halo 2 on the Live service. So you've been warned. Read on for lots of specific info.

It seems you have the choice whether or not to install this update. However, if you do not there is just the small problem of not being able to continue playing, this might be a drag for some people.

Most of the stuff in this autoupdate is designed to fix cheating, security or minor, invisible bugs, but one thing you will notice right away, is that the Relic teleporter bug has been fixed, so you can no longer crouch jump to get through a locked teleporter. That's going to make team games a lot more palatable on one of the bigger, more complex maps in the game.

Battlfield 2 Case ModOk, this is one the best case mods I've ever seen. It certainly gives the Half Life 2 mod a run for its money.

Some of the most popular case mods in recent memory have been themed around popular computer games. Macroman's Hidden & Dangerous 2 Ammo Shuttles was one of the most entered competitions ever held by PCZone and PCGamer magzine. Piloux's Blackmesa II currently takes pride of place in Valve's conference room at their headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. And we couldn't talk about game-themed case mods without mentioning Doom 3: Project Mars City by Crimson Sky - one of the most detailed mods ever attempted.

However, there is a new kid on the block. 35 year-old German architect Oliver Konig aka Butterkneter enters the fray with a series of cases with a Battlefield 2 theme. But before we check them out, let's look at Oliver's modding portfolio to date.

A new trailer has been unleashed by Activision, showcasing the upcoming GUN game. GUN is a western shooter that was recently showased at E3. Sadly, the 'westerns' genre is somewhat neglected in the face of so many 'modern' shooters.

Hopefully this will open the door for more gun tootin', brothel infested, whiskey crackin' madness, especially considering the next-gen consoles are nearly upon us (at least Microsoft's offering)

GUN was the subject of a great deal of hype and speculation at E3. Activision have only now decided to give us a trailer. And some screenshots, of course. The game is looking good, though the trailer is most definitely NOT for the squeamish.

GTA: San AndreasIt would seem the war on video games is showing no sign of letting up, at least in the foreseeable future. Now onto Japan, where the government is now looking to restrict the sale of 'mature' games to people under the age of 18.

The idea was conceived by the CERO (Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association), which will see retailers taking a more 'pro-active' stance against the selling of over 18's rated games to anyone under that age. The only instance where a game will be sold to a minor is if he or she is accompanied by a parent or guardian. The new move will also see shops separating games rated over 18's from all other games. In addition to all that, stores will be asked to post up a 'ratings system' so that parents are fully aware of how the ratings work in order for them to make up their own mind what is and is not suitable for their children.

As stringent as these propositions may seem, everything outlined is completely voluntary and no store has to comply with the plans set out by the CERO (yet).

But CESA distribution committee chief and Koei president Kiyoshi Komatsu was optimistic about the plan's effectiveness. "These self-regulation proposals have been accepted by 95 percent of retailers at the current time. That includes not only game stores, but electronic shops and convenience stores as well," Komatsu said.

The policy is expected to launch in the next few weeks. Its implementation period will differ between retailers, depending on a store's size and format.

The industry is also looking at other avenues of self-imposed control to keep games out of the wrong hands. These include more activities on the part of CESA to make the CERO rating system widely acknowledged by the public, such as making CERO labels on game packages more visible. The organization also plans to send notices about its self-imposed restrictions to government agencies, which have recently blamed violent games for negatively affecting youth.

Online Gamingaccording to a recent independent study conducted by market research firm Phoenix Marketing International, parents are happy that the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) is doing a fine job in rating PC and console games for their children. The study suggests that parents see it more their own responsibility to oversee what games their child is playing.

The study also suggests that recent news stories surrounding games can be a deciding factor in the decision making of 1 in 3 individuals.

After the whole 'Hot Coffee' drama and the numerous other problems that games seem to get a beating for, this will be a welcomed piece of news for the ESRB.

On the issue of whether or not videogames are instructive, more than half of those questioned agreed with the statement that "videogames should be taken for what they are; entertainment, not so-called 'training tools.'"

More than two-thirds of respondents agreed that videogames are "not just for kids" and that "adults have the right to play sometimes offensive games." However, gamers were significantly more likely than non-gamers to agree with this statement.

The Neistat BrothersI was emailed an interesting link by one of our readers yesterday. The link was to a video made by The Neistat Brothers (the creators of 'iPod's Dirty Secret') wishing to promote games as fun, non-lethal forms of entertainment. In a satirical manner, The Neistat Brothers, dressed up as scientists explain exactly where to get and how to install the so called 'Hot Coffee' mod for GTA: San Andreas. The whole purpose of the video is not to show you how to get free porn, rather to highlight the fact that there may very well be a lot of potentially harmful items around the house, but that video games do not fall into that category.

If nothing else, interesting.

IT'S ONLY A GAME (Quicktime required)

Thanks Mark.

Navy Training Exercises: Strike and RetrieveFollowing the lead of the U.S. Army and their successful America's Army game, the U.S. Navy has made a move into the gaming world with a new PC title they're giving away as a free download.

It has the not-so-snappy title Navy Training Exercises: Strike and Retrieve, and sees players attempt to retrieve a downed spy plane before it falls into enemy hands.

The official website doesn't give much information away about the gameplay, though Gamedaily has a short write up with some details:

To retrieve the top secret information from the downed plane, you'll have to pilot a remote operated vehicle through enemy infested waters, avoiding detection and marine wildlife.

When playing the game, you will have many puzzles to challenge you mentally. Some even require going to the Navy's website (Navy.com) to get certain codes to proceed. Obviously, since the game is a modern day recruiting tool, the level of difficulty present in the game might be a tad too much for younger games. Also, the game is single player, much unlike the Army's foray into games.

Lacking blood and gore, and instead focusing on testing the mental mettle of the gamer, Navy Training Exercises: Strike and Retrieve knows its audience, and will hopefully experience success similar to America's Army.

To play, create an account on the official site and download the game here.

If Jack Thompson and Hillary Clinton think some sex mini-games in GTA: San Andreas are a bit morally suspect, they might want to get a better perspective and take a look at a new FPS innocuously called "Ethnic Cleansing".

Published by an arm of the National Alliance, a "white separatist" group in the U.S., the game is specifically designed to promote race divisions and encourage violence against ethnic minorities.

Players can choose to play as either a skinhead or a KKK member, with the aim of killing "predatory sub-humans" - black or Latino people:

Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon appears in the game as the final boss, armed with a rocket launcher. His character makes comments along the lines of "We have destroyed your culture!" and "We silenced Henry Ford," before dying with the line: "Filthy white dog, you have destroyed thousands of years of planning."

Resistance Records began advertising the game on Martin Luther King day, using the slogan: "Celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a virtual Race War!"

Black & White 2Peter Molyneux has recently announced that development of the sequel to Black and White is coming along nicely and that a demo for the game should be ready upon its release or possibly even before the game hits the shelves.

While attending EA's Hot Summer Nights Event in San Francisco last week, Molyneux hinted that the demo would probably contain one of the early levels of the game, giving players a glimpse of the first land and a chance to play around with their chosen creature.

Molyneux also let slip two possible release dates for the much anticipated sequel, 27th of September or 14th of October. Lionhead Studios are striving to have the game ready for release on 27th of September but admit that date is possibly 'quite tight', making the 14th of October a more likely release date.

Lionhead is also promising that preview disks for the game will be in the press's hands within the next couple of weeks, so it seems the code is firm and robust enough for our viewing pleasure. Black & White 2, we have to say, was looking rather lush, impressive and polished when we saw it last week and it seems the game is shaping up rather nicely.

We've also posted these new screens from the game for your viewing pleasure and if you'd like to know further details on B&W2, why not check out our recent and rather extensive interview with Peter Molyneux and Ron Millar where the Lionhead pair give you the complete lowdown on this ambitious marriage of god game, RTS and Tamagotchi.

KutaragiIt seems Playstation and indeed comedy fans alike just can't get enough of Ken Kutaragi's next-gen remarks. If he's not slamming Microsoft, he's brushing up on his stand-up routines. In an interview that has many people wondering if the 'Father of Playstation' is indeed taking his medication regularly, Kutaragi has recently told Electronic Engineering Times:

Cell is not like that. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. That was done for security reasons: If processors of high performance and wide bandwidth like the Cell were linked together without sufficient security, a worldwide system crash could occur with one attack.

Actually his comical anecdotes remind me of one colourful Iraqi information Minister...'There IS no Xbox 360, none I tell you!'

Hitman: Blood MoneyIt's not a happy day for Tomb Raider fans as Eidos has announced it will be pushing back the release of the upcoming Tomb Raider: Legend along with another one of its key titles, Hitman: Bloodmoney. The reasoning behind the delay is for extra developing time as Eidos are looking to 'maximise their hit potential'.

This is the first time a new Lara game has been in the works outside of usual series developer Core Design, whose last offering Angel of Darkness was such a disappointment it lost the series to American developer Crystal Dynamics. The Hitman meanwhile is in altogether better shape, but will still no doubt benefit from the extra polish. Expectation is high that SCI can reinvigorate Eidos' impressive but somewhat tarnished portfolio, and we'll be watching their decisions - such as this - with interest over coming months.

No new release date has been given for either titile just yet. Watch this space for more.

Prison TycoonA demo of Prison Tycoon has been released, the sim where you have to build the ultimate correctional facility. In the game, you build a low-security prison from the ground-up, gradually upgrading to maximum-security for the world's most dangerous criminals. You have to break up inmate fights and keep up prisoner morale by providing them with activities, while taking care of issues such as giving time-off for good behaviour and hiring the prison staff.

The demo allows full access to all of the game features, but includes a sixty-minute time limit:

CRIME DOESN’T PAY, BUT JUSTICE DOES.
Brick by Brick...
Start from the ground up placing the very walls and fences that will
house and contain your prisoners. Choose from multiple isolated
environments and get to work.

Pay the Cost to be the Boss...
Begin with a low security prison and build it up to a maximum security
facility for the world's most dangerous criminals.

What We Have Here is a Failure to Communicate...
Expertly staff your prison with wardens, guards, cooks and rehabilitation
experts. Carefully balance your budget, maintain prisoner morale and
minimize the potential for financial meltdown.

Iron Hand or Velvet Fist...
Determine the overall security level of your lockdown, but beware!
Too harsh a prison will create a dangerous environment and could spark
prisoner riots. Too lenient an approach will result in rampant gang activity.

GTA: San AndreasGamespot.com are speculating that the furore over the Hot Coffee GTA: San Andreas mod might actually be an artful piece of viral marketing initiated by Rockstar Games.

The notion came up in an IM conversation with a source close to Rockstar's marketing department; he told them it wasn't unlikely that the whole thing is a marketing ploy, suggesting Rockstar may have actually given the mod to an outside party as a way of getting around the ratings handed down by the ESRB:

Sony PSPBandai Games have announced they will be publishing The Legend of Heroes, an RPG with over 50 hours of gameplay for the Sony PSP.

The game will hit stores in the U.S. this September, and initial information reveals it will be a single-player turn based RPG with 3D environments, and will feature over 100 unique characters for players to interact with:

Known by the name: Eiyuu Densetsu ("Legend of Heroes") Gagharv Trilogy: Akai Shizuku ("Crimson Tears") in Japan, the game is developed by legendary Nihon Falcom in Tokyo. The company is well known for their RPG work on many platforms and brands, including the "Ys", "Brandish" and "Sorcerian Series." While faithful to the "Legend of Heroes" series, players unfamiliar with the story will discover an easy-to-pick-up gameplay experience.

The game also features more than 100 types of original character illustrations by Minako Iwasaki, a beloved ex-Falcom artist who has redrawn her characters specifically for the PSP system.

Bandai promise more information on the game will be released in the coming months.

Video games have been under the spotlight recently, surrounded by a lot of controversy, mainly from the San Andreas sex mod and other such games related happenings that have not seen the industry's reputation coming up roses.

Well some positive news coming in recently from the British Medical Journal that suggests video games may help children who suffer with cancer and other severe conditions in such a way that it distracts them from their pain.

According to professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Tent University, Mark Griffiths, patients who were distracted by video games had 'less nausea and lower systolic blood pressure than [control patients] (who were simply asked to rest) after treatment and needed fewer analgesics.'

Griffiths wrote: "games focus attention away from potential discomfort and, unlike more traditional, therapeutic activities, they do not rely on passive movements and sometimes painful manipulation of the limbs."

One example he cited of the benefits of playing videogames concerned an eight year-old boy who continually picked at his face, leading to scarring on his upper lip. "Previous treatments had failed so the boy was given a hand held video game to keep his hands occupied. After two weeks the affected area had healed."

Battlefield 2
Over on the official Battlefield 2 website, EA has announced availability of the second patch for the much troubled online shooter. This patch (1.02) is purported to fix the recent memory leak that was causing some servers hosting the game to crash unexpectedly.

Recently EA advised fans to uninstall Battlefield 2 from their PCs after applying the last patch (1.01) that caused more problems than it fixed but hopefully they will make a nice recovery and redeem there long awaited sequel.

The hotfix for Battlefield 2 v1.01 is now available for download. This update replaces v1.01 and fixes the said memory leak. Along with this update, we'’ve made available an updated unranked server file for Win32 and an updated unranked server file for Linux.

bf2patch_v_102.exe (16.3MB)
battlefield2_server_2484.exe (127MB)
bf2-linuxded-1.1.2484.0-installer.zip (131MB)

Doom Movie Logo?

According to an article over on GameCloud.com, it is confirmed that the upcoming Doom movie will be based in Mars, contrary to previous speculation.

Recently there was a Doom movie panel held in San Diego, California. The panel saw some audience questions answered by stars of the upcoming Doom movie, including The Rock.

GameCloud have the 90 second teaser trailer that confirms the movie takes place one Mars, plus another trailer that fans of the Doom game will certainly want to check out. The second trailer features part of the first person shooter's sequence, as the movie will have very similar scenes to that of the Doom 3 game.

Yes, the movie will at one point have a viewpoint just like the game, right down to the weapons loading animation. The sequence was, by the producer'’s own admission, still incomplete in terms of visual effects and other elements but watching the clip feels like you are watching the game in action, from surprise monster appearance in corridors to shooting parts of the environment to fry the creatures.

We recently reported on a survey conducted by US polling firm Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, in which it was concluded that consumers favoured Sony's Blue-Ray disks over Toshiba's HD-DVD as a next-gen format.

Well, Gamespot did a little snooping and discovered some disturbing facts:

1. The survey was funded by the Blue-Ray association.
2. When asking for the data, GameSpot was only provided with a small sample of incomplete data that compared Blu-Ray features against current DVDs, not HD-DVDs.
3.Consumers were told to assume the price would be the same, when in fact Blu-Ray discs are expected to sell for at least $10 more than current DVDs.

But there was no such question about whether people would prefer a format that makes the discs $10 more expensive or just 10 percent more expensive, as is expected with HD-DVDs.
If the above price estimates are correct, a $20 DVD would equate to a $22 HD-DVD and a $30 Blu-Ray disc.

So in retrospect, it looks like some shady marketing by team Blue-Ray.
