Quake IVThe QuakeCon convention is underway in Texas, and id have been talking up the next instalment in the series, Quake 4.
The company's CEO, Todd Hollenshead has revealed that he thinks Quake 4 will trump DOOM 3 with the help of varied gameplay, better A.I. and advancements such as drivable vehicles:

"I really feel that Quake 4's going to be a better game than Doom 3 was"

Also revealed for the first time at the convention was the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is being developed alongside the PC version by Raven Software. Gamespot were among the few who got an early look at the 360 version behind closed doors, and revealed that it looks slightly rougher than the PC version:

The 360 version of the game looks slightly rougher around the edges than the PC version--the textures don't seem quite as sharp--but since both versions of the game are being developed at the same time, Raven plans to have the 360 version come out shortly after the PC version. The 360 version of the game will apparently use the Halo/Red Faction-style control scheme that has become a standard setup for console shooters. You'll use the analog sticks to move and aim, and you'll use the D pad to select weapons. Furthermore, in classic Quake fashion, you'll be able to carry every weapon in the game simultaneously (including machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers, rocket launchers, railguns, nailguns, and the hyperblaster energy weapon).

Both versions of Quake 4 are due for release later on this year.

Windows 95 on PSP

A PSP hacker has managed to get both Windows 95 and Linux running on the handheld, though only with version 1.0 of the firmware. The hack makes use of an open-source x86 PC emulator and apparently Windows runs well, but takes a long time to start up. Once running, he was able to navigate the hard drive through My Computer and play Minesweeper and Solitaire.

DLX Linux also loaded perfectly, but due to a lack of keyboard support not a lot can be done with it.

Instructions and screenshots are available here, via PSPUpdates.com

Prey2K Games have released six new screenshots and a cool new teaser trailer for Prey, the resurrected sci-fi shooter that's being developed for PC and Xbox 360.

It was revealed back in May that Human Head Studios were working on the game with supervision provided by 3D Realms. The game is set to use a modified version of the DOOM 3 engine and will be partly distributed through a Steam-esque system that lets customers who pre-order begin playing the instant the game is officially released next year.

George W. Bush Madden NFL '06To mark a recent visit to their Florida studio by Governor Jeb Bush, EA Sports worked up a fantasy sequence featuring the Governor facing off against his brother in Madden NFL '06.

The two brothers square up in a match between the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys that sees Jeb Bush flatten George W. before going on to score the winning touchdown for the Miami Dolphins:

Following the demonstration, the folks at Tiburon presented Bush with an autographed copy of Madden NFL 06 -- and two DVD copies of the Bush vs. Bush video.

"One’s going to Crawford, Texas," said the Governor, where President Bush is vacationing at his Texas ranch. "This is a keeper."

It's been less than a month since SOE launched Station Exchange, but already a group of hackers have managed to exploit the "secure marketplace" for EverQuest II.

Last weekend, hackers figured out how to create tons of EQ II platinum, the game's currency that can be exchanged for items or cashed in for real currency on Station Exchange. According to SOE's Chris Kramer, the hackers had a field day, managing to inflate the game's economy by a fifth. However, the sudden influx of money set off alarm bells over at fortress Sony and the scam was quickly shut down:

Once the team identified the hackers, it immediately shut down their accounts. Sony does not disclose the names of its players.

Kramer also said that SOE has tools that allowed it to track all the duped platinum and remove it. Thus, he said, while the EQ2 economy had taken a huge inflationary hit on Saturday, the company's customer service team put in a lot of overtime over the weekend and the problem was largely resolved by Sunday.

Halo 2An official Microsoft survey has caused some Halo fans to speculate (wildly) that the game is to get a reworking as a strategy simulation.

First, the email informing players of the survey contained this statement: "Commanding the battlefield takes strategic thinking."

Combine that with a question about simulation games in the survey itself and someone somewhere was bound to jump to conclusions:

These clues spawned one eagle-eyed GameSpot editor to be rich with curiosity, and he/she promptly galloped to the conclusion that a Halo-themed strategy game may be in the works. Logic says that if Solid Snake can be featured in a card-based strategy game, then Master Chief could meet the same fate, right? However, given developer Bungie's track record with its popular franchises (Marathon was always a FPS, Myth was always an RTS), it seems unlikely that you'll be reading the text "M Chief needles Covenant Elite for 20 points of damage."

Capcom have released a huge batch of new screenshots for the PlayStation 2 version of Resident Evil 4, some showing off the PS2-exclusive weapon, the PRL (Plagas Removal Laser) 412.

The game is set for a release in the U.S. on the 25th of October, and in Europe on the 4th of November this year. Upon release, fans will also be able to pick up a "Premium Edition" version for no extra cost that includes goodies like a making-of DVD and a laser cell of character Ada Wong.

John Woo's Stranglehold

Back in May, Midway Games announced that director John Woo would team up with movie actor Chow Yun Fat to produce Stranglehold, a game that would see Fat reprise the role he played in 1992's Hard Boiled.

Today, Gamespot reveal that Midway plans on releasing the game as a launch title for the PlayStation 3, with an Xbox 360 version following in autumn 2006.

Midway also shed some light on their strategy for next-gen consoles in general. The company don't plan on ditching the current generation of consoles just because a new wave of hardware is coming out. In fact, as far as they're concerned, the PS2 still has plenty of life left in it, and plan to support the console for a further four years by releasing a combination of big-name titles and games aimed at kids.

Arnold SchwarzeneggerCalifornia governor and action-flick guru Arnold Schwarzenegger is having a conflict of minds over pending legislation in San Francisco. The legislation (if passed) would prohibit retailers from selling or renting violent or sexually explicit games to minors. Arnie can vetoe the bill, but this may present him as some sort of lap-dog owned by the video game and entertainment industry lobbies. If he does indeed sign the bill, games with a rating of "M" (mature) will be limited to minors, forcing kids to opt for "T" rated games instead, like Arnie's Terminator 3: The Redemption game.

This kind of leaves the former Terminator in somewhat of a catch-22 situation.

The controversy surrounds the pending video game legislation of Assemblyman Leland Yee (D-San Francisco). Yee's bill would prohibit retailers from selling or renting violent or sexually explicit games to minors. The bill is currently stuck in committee, although Yee hopes to push it forward. The Assemblyman plans to hold hearings on issues surrounding hidden content and video game ratings later this month.

Critics see the ethical dilemma for Schwarzenegger as follows: If he vetoes the bill he will be seen as a pawn of the video game and entertainment industry lobbies, which are very powerful in California. If he signs Yee's bill, it will most likely limit sales of "M" rated games, theortetically driving those consumers to buy "T" rated games - like Terminator 3: The Redemption - instead.

In other words, the Guv is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.

Xbox 360Electronics Boutique (EB) has posted up a list of 21 purported launch titles for the Xbox 360. The list is by no means official, so apply with the usual smidgen of salt:
  • Amped 3 (2K Games)
  • Call of Duty 2 (Activision)
  • Condemned (Sega)
  • Dead Or Alive 4 (Tecmo)
  • Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Bethesda)
  • Final Fantasy XI (Microsoft)
  • Full Auto (Sega)
  • Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
  • liKameo: Elements of Power (Microsoft)
  • Madden NFL 06 (EA)
  • NBA 2K6 (2K Games)
  • NHL 2K6 (2K Games)
  • The Outfit (THQ)
  • Perfect Dark LE (Microsoft)
  • Project Gotham Racing 3 (Microsoft)
  • Quake 4 (Activision)
  • Ridge Racer 6 (Namco)
  • Saints Row (THQ)
  • Tony Hawk'’s American Wasteland (Activision)
  • Top Spin 2 (2K Games)

Also included in the initial list released by EB, were three games that will definitely not be ready by launch: The Godfather, Too Human Part 1, and Burnout Revenge. However, Perfect Dark and Kameo have been confirmed as day one launch titles, —there is still some question about PGR3. EB expects each game to retail for $59.99, except for Kameo ($49.99), but these prices are not final.

Ok this should be fun, competitions like this usually bring out some real talent. Talent that makes most of us wonder what wrong steps we took. id Software has announced a new contest in which Quake fans are asked to design some Quake 4 art of their own that incorporates the official Quake 4 logo.

The most creative and inspiring works will be voted by the Quake community, so fans get a chance to have their say. id and Raven Software will carefully select from the top-ten artworks voted by fans, these winners will receive a signed copy of Quake 4 special DVD edition for the PC, plus an official Quake 4 t-shirt.

So all you creative types, get working on something beautiful, something that the rest of us non-artisan folk can drool over. The winners will be announced on the official Quake 4 website.

The following prizes (with corresponding estimated retail values) will be awarded at the conclusion of the competition: One Grand Prize will be awarded consisting of one QUAKE 4 T-shirt (approximate retail value $18.00), a autographed copy of the QUAKE 4 Special Edition game (approximate retail value $59.99) and an exclusive QUAKE 4 poster (approximate retail value $10.00). Japan's online folk are really and truly embracing online gaming with about as much affection as water. New figures coming in from trade group OnlineGameForum suggest that this year will see a staggering 62% growth in the sector's revenue. Japan's online gaming revenue reached 57.8 billion Yen (423 million Euro) last year, but this year is seeing those figures blown out of the water with online gaming expected to top 93.8 billion Yen (687 million Euro) by the year's end.

The meteoric rise of the sector has been fuelled by a number of factors, with console online gaming and PC online gaming both contributing to growth. Key online titles in Japan include Square Enix' PS2 and PC MMOG Final Fantasy XI and Korean-developed PC MMOG Ragnarok Online.

Online gaming in Japan is expected to go from strength to strength with the introduction of online game services for both Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS offering in the handheld market. Also, with the next-gen consoles bringing more and more innovation to the gaming-hungry, Japan is expected to reach dizzying new heights by the end of next year.

The growth in online game revenues is also reflected in many other territories; the current market leader in the MMOG space, Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft, has over 3.5 million subscribers worldwide at present, and other online sectors such as casual gaming have also shown significant growth over the past year.

GTA: San AndreasGames.net has posted what it considers to be 10 hugely over-rated games. Hardly surprising to see id's Doom 3 in there. Although we all loved it here at Igniq, the novelty did wear off pretty quickly. My buddy Mario, who has been getting a bad rap lately is still taking a beating as his Mario64 adventure takes the no.3 spot.

The no.1 over-rated game according to these guys is Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and I promise you will not see me contesting that decision. I found the game to be extremely predictive, and talk about stereo-typing!

Talk about overrated. GTA: San Andreas offers little more than brand appeal and played-out stereotypes. This bloated, glorified expansion pack added a few noteworthy gameplay enhancements, such as the outdoor terrain and some enhanced drive-by shooting segments. But the sheer size of the game works against it: "more" doesn't necessarily mean "better." In the end, San Andreas has a fair share of cool moments, but it was really an excuse for developer Rockstar to milk the gaming community one more time. Game reviewers stumbled all over each other in order to give San Andreas their highest honors. But upon closer examination, the game is little more than a half-assed retread. Unless Rockstar can break some major ground with its next GTA title, this series has just about run its course. And for the record, Vice City easily stands as the best, most innovative installment in the series. Vice City is a true classic; San Andreas is just more, more, more set to a corporate soundtrack.

Quake WarsThe people who brought you Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory are now at work on their next project, which will see their game upgraded with the Doom 3 Engine. Wedgewood's old mod was based around the aging Quake 3 Engine used in Wolfenstein 3D but the new port will get the fresh id treatment.

The game will have the look and feel of Doom 3 with a few differences. Instead of roaming down dark and dank corridors, there will be several outdoor elements to the game, with environments not limited to the inside. Also some new technology developed by id's John Carmack will allow developers to create environments that render levels and terrain all the way out to the horizon, where before games usually covered up the limited ability and draw distance with fog or forcing the game to absorb some parts of the terrain.

According to the developers, the new technology, called 'Magetexture' will also let them assign different physical properties to certain types of surfaces in the game. Like giving one surface the property of asphalt might allow for better traction with land vehicles but would also be more noisy to walk on.

Apparently, since the game takes place on earth, prior the first invasion conflict that preceded the events in 1997's Quake II (in which players took on the role of a lone soldier to hunt down the invading Stroggs' leader), the game will take place in varied environments on the planet; not just the desert region shown in the E3 demo movie, but also possibly temperate and jungle zones.

PeaceIn new long-term study trying to establish a connection between playing violent video games and violent behavior in the real world, gaming has come out on top.Players clocking up and average of 56 hours play over the course of a one month period on the the violent MMORPG 'Asheron's Call 2', were found to have no violent or aggressive side-effects as a result of playing the game.

Players were not statistically different from the non-playing control group in their beliefs on aggression after playing the game than they were before playing, Williams said.

Nor was game play a predictor of aggressive behaviors. Compared with the control group, the players neither increased their argumentative behaviors after game play nor were significantly more likely to argue with their friends and partners.

Although the leader of the project, Dmitri Williams said that there is no connection between the games tested and violent behavior, he did not rule out the possibility of some aggression from other games but stressed that a lot more testing needs to be done before his team can reach any definitive conclusions.

Williams, a professor of speech communication at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, is an expert on the effects of online video-game play. He conducted the study with Marko Skoric, a lecturer at the School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

Softpedia have an application that will allow Doom 3 users to play the original 'Doom' game under the Doom 3 engine, to experience the old classic with beefed up graphics. The only problem is, and I can't for the life of me understand this, you need to have a a Mac.

So anyway, if you're using a Mac and play Doom 3 then you might want to check it out and see what all the fuss is about.

The "G4M Classic Doom Launcher" launches Classic Doom for Doom 3. Simply drag it to your Application folder, choose your Doom 3 Application and have fun with Classic Doom.

The mod is Classic Doom for Doom 3, and will feature the first episode of The Ultimate Doom. Simply download the Linux-Version of the mod here and put the "cdoom"-Folder into the Doom 3 Folder.

G4M Classic Doom Launcher 1.0

Hopefully some bright spark can get working on a Windows alternative so the rest of us suckers can get our hands on some of the action.

Update: Grab the Windows version from developers Sonic Clang's website.

Xbox 360A contract between Microsoft and a third-party peripheral maker has shed some light on an MS plan to control exactly what accessories can connect to the Xbox 360.

According to a report on C|NET, the Xbox 360 will feature a security system that allows only authorised peripherals to work on the machine; to be placed on the authorised list, manufacturers will have to shell out royalties to Microsoft.

Microsoft's explanation for locking down what connects to the console was simply that they wanted to "make sure the customers are getting the best experience possible", the reasoning being that only companies that make high-quality products will be willing to pay the royalties.

The alternate view of the plan however is that Microsoft see this as a way to squeeze even more profit from the console:

The new royalty program could be part of Microsoft's goal of turning a profit with Xbox 360, something the company was not able to do with the prior generation console, said IDC analyst Schelley Olhava.

"Microsoft has made it very clear that it's all about profitability" with this generation of console, Olhava said. "Maybe this is a way they are looking to make additional revenue off of the Xbox."

Real-life KatamariI've been dying to try out the crazy ball-rolling Katamari Damacy since it started building up a cult following on the Web, but alas, the game was never released in Europe. Now it seems I'll get a chance to try out the sequel at least; Namco and EA have signed a co-publishing deal to bring We Love Katamari to the EU next year:

"At last, the time has come for our fans in Europe to enjoy We ♥ Katamari," said Keita Takahashi, the game's Director at Namco. "I am so excited about this! Basically, this is a silly game that doesn't involve a whole lot of thinking, but if you will just laugh and sing along as you roll, roll and roll, I'm sure you will find it to be a lot of fun."

PSPGamespot reports on an interesting interview SCE's Isumu Kawanishi gave to Famitsu. Kawanishi is the Sony software chief who brought us the official browser for the PSP, and he talked of some new features that might be coming down the line for the console.

Among them is an advanced email application that would allow video and voice chat, and a way for the PSP to stream video directly from the Internet, rather than the cumbersome process of first saving files to the memory stick and playing the video back from there. A brief mention is also made of a Digital Rights Management system for the PSP, that will allow paid content to be viewed on the console.

Another interesting aspect mentioned is game developers making full use of the new browser. The browser can be opened during gameplay, and Kawanishi sees this as a way to improve future game releases:

For example, a player can pause a game, go to the game's site, download new data, and resume playing the game with new content.

Kawanishi also mentioned the possibility of viruses hitting the PSP, saying that the console is not as vulnerable in general as a PC, but that his staff are on hand to make sure countermeasures are in place if a PSP virus were to surface.

Just as Nvidia usher in this generation's graphics cards in the form of the GeForce 7800 GTX, we are now set for the card's little brother. If you just can't summon the cash for the coveted graphics board then maybe the 7800 GT will be more to your liking.

Nvidia launched the 7800 GTX just over a month and a half ago with a price tag of $449. Now a 'slightly' slower version will soon be introduced at a reduced price, without sacrificing that much of the card's power. The GT equivalent of Nvidia's recent beast was showcased at Quakecon today.

With the introduction of GT-flavour 7800s, the 6800 series is also set to take a price drop.

With the 6800 Ultra still a little overpriced at between four and five hundred USD, the introduction of the 7800 GT will either push the 6800 Ultra way down in price or out of the market. With the line of G70 parts, we don't see a fundamental feature set expansion from the previous 6 Series parts. Moving from the GeForce 4 to the FX series, DX9 was first introduced, and the 6 Series brought SM 3.0 real programmable shader performance and native PCI Express. Without offering extremely compelling new features, the spotlight will shift to pure performance, cost, and power/heat. Rounding out the high end, the 7800 GT fills in the performance gap between the 7800 GTX and the 6800 Ultra.

In our minds, there is really no reason for NVIDIA to release any more consumer desktop parts based on G70 when the NV4x series takes care of the rest of the line up very well. Perhaps it would be possible to release a faster passively cooled card based on a very low clock speed part with more pipelines than the current low end for the Home Theater PC (HTPC) crowd who demand silence along side performance. Other than that, the mobile space is the only other segment we see really yearning for G70 power. Until performance is increased beyond the 7800 GTX, it will be hard for us to see a reason for a new desktop 7 series part.

Dungeons & DragonsJust a week after alpha testing began for Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach, Atari have delayed the release of the game until next year.

The game was due for release at the end of this year, but has now slipped into early 2006. No specific reason for the delay is given in a report, though Eurogamer mention the fact that the delay comes in the same week as Atari announced a sharp loss - $32.8 million - in the quarter that ended on the 30th of June.

Development on Dungeons & Dragons Online has been ongoing for over two years at Turbine Entertainment, and despite the delay, fans can still apply to play the game early as part of the alpha test.

To take part in the test, sign up here, and register on the community forums for the game, as Turbine have said they give preference to members when deciding the testers.

I stumbled across this mildly amusing flash game. The object is to ogle and mentally undress your friend's sister, without getting caught. It's kind of like in those Tom Clancy games where you can't be seen or you fail the mission, this time though you have an ogle-meter that rises everytime she is getting suspicious of you.

It's just good fun, it's Lust for Bust.

nomorehotcoffee.comRockstar Games have launched the site nomorehotcoffee.com to provide instructions on how to apply a recently-released patch that disables the Hot Coffee modification for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

The site begins by stating "The "Hot Coffee" scenes were not intended to be part of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas experience", and an F.A.Q. goes on to distance the company even further from the content by calling Hot Coffee an "unauthorized third party modification" and there is "absolutely no way" users can be exposed to controversial sex scenes without installing it.

Metal Gear Solid 4The official list of exhibitors and games on display at this year's Tokyo Games Show has been released, and Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid 4 is due to make an appearance.

The long-awaited PS3 game made waves when a trailer was shown at the E3 back in May, going on to win 1UP.com's best trailer of the show, but no other media has been released since then.

MGS 4 is one of four next-gen games confirmed so far for the show, though it's unclear at this point whether it will be playable.

The other next-gen games on the list are Konami's Rumble Roses XX for Xbox 360, and Koei's Ni-Oh for PS3 and Dynasty Warriors 5 for the Xbox 360.

The Tokyo Games Show is set to kick off on the 16th of September until the 18th, check back here for more updates on MGS 4 and the other next-gen games then.

Rampage: Total DestructionMidway's King Kong-esque arcade classic Rampage is set to make a reappearance on the Playstation 2 and GameCube.

Midway showcased the game recently at their headquarters in Chicago, and revealed it will be titled "Rampage: Total Destruction":

Like the original, gamers can unleash their inner beasts by playing the supersized simian George, the larger-than-life lizard Lizzie, or the whopping werewolf Ralph. And this time there are even more monsters to unlock and play as. The destruction is rampant as gamers will scale skyscrapers, fell helicopters, and eat a few hapless citizens.

The game is due to be released next spring for $19.99 on both PS2 and GameCube.

In the meantime, GameSpot have posted up the first-look and trailer for the game.

ZBoard Key Command UnitIdeazon, the company behind the customizable ZBoard keyboards, have announced a new variation of the ZBoard that is helping U.S. soldiers train for combat duty. The ZBoard Key Command Unit is designed for use with a military training console that simulates real-world battlefield situations.

Much like the gaming keyboards, the main advantage the ZBoard brings to the army is the labeling of the special key functions to control the console; soldiers don't have to spend valuable time memorizing individual key functions:

"Using Ideazon's proprietary Key Command Unit with our VBS1 training consoles is saving precious time and allowing soldiers to focus more completely on learning from simulations before shipping out to combat zones," said Fred Bonilla, a project engineer at Coalescent Technologies Corp. of Orlando, Fla. "Instead of taking time to learn necessary keystrokes before being able to launch into simulations, military personnel are taking advantage of Ideazon's technology to maximize the benefits of simulation learning."

World of WarcraftWorld of Warcraft players will probably be pleased to hear that Blizzard apologises for recent gameplay disturbances by granting a two-day time extension for all accounts that were active last weekend. Here's the explanation from the official website:

Therefore, due to some recent disturbances in gameplay all World of Warcraft players in Europe will receive a two-day time extension. In the next few days the two-day extension will be added to players' accounts that were active during the last weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we once again wish you all good luck in your adventures in Azeroth!

This 30-year-old nerd was looking for the right tattoo until it dawned on him that he wanted to pay tribute to some of gaming's most notible icons. Slashdot links to the blog of a guy who wanted to...well, blog his experience creating the ultimate game tattoo. It looks painful, although he did have his wife by his side for support (that poodle-walkin' butter-cup). Was the end result worth all the effort? I think so.

i'd always wanted a tattoo, but could never decide what to get. a couple years ago, however, inspiration struck and i began working on an idea. maybe it was because i was living in vancouver at the time, i'm not sure. anyway, my recent (june 2005) 30th birthday fueled a furious design phase which has resulted in the following, now prominently displayed on my lower left leg (most of the leg, too)!

as the native people in the pacific northwest (and other places) used totem poles to tell stories and keep family chronologies, my design was intended to tell a history of some of the important games that influenced me and my family as i grew up.

sorry about the blurriness of some of the pics... it was a borrowed digital camera and we didn't understand the settings.

holy crap, this hurt a lot

Xbox 360The Xbox 360 rumour machine just doesn't let up, and the latest news is quite promising if it turns out to be accurate. One ray of hope just appeared on the horizon, in the form of Amazon listing Xbox 360 games at a much lower price than expected. Could that fat guy be dropping down a chimney near you early this year?

We were earlier lead to believe that games for the upcoming console would debut at UKP 44.99 this coming November. Despite this, Amazon seems to be either guessing like there's no tomorrow or they know something we don't. The online-shopping giant is listing games for as low as UKP 29.99.

So far the only games listed are Call of Duty 2 - £29.99, Kameo: Elements of Power - £29.99, Perfect Dark Zero - £32.99, Quake 4 - £29.99, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland - £29.99 and GUN - £29.99.

Release dates are also mentioned for some upcoming titles like Quake 4 and Tony Hawk's for October 28th, Call of Duty 2 for November 24th and GUN set for November 11th. Of course we cannot take these dates as concrete just yet. If the prices do hold up (give or take a few bucks), next-gen gaming may be a more accessible endeavour than previously expected.

MarioAs a Super Mario Brothers fan, it's very distressing to point you in the direction of an article that looks at the fat plumber indulging in too many slices of corporate pizza. A pizza so stale and wretched that the salami turned years ago and it looks like Mario himself is choking on the crust.

Games.net point out the top ten 'Mario sellout Moments' in a bizarre look at the Nintendo icon.

Among the shameless acts are the utterly sinful Mario Brothers film starring Bob Hoskins. I have not even seen it, but there's all the information I need to know about it right there, Baby Mario (nuff said?) and the number one spot going to the much anticipated 'Mario Kart Double Dash!!'

Without a doubt, the biggest letdown in Mario land was Mario Kart Double Dash!! for the Nintendo GameCube. Perhaps the most anticipated Nintendo release of this generation, Double Dash!! is proof that little has changed since Mario Kart on the SNES. The sense of speed is mediocre and little was done to compensate for the lack of online multiplayer play, with the exception of a Crash Team Racing power slide rip-off and two-in-one kart action. Big deal.

PSP Grip DockKotaku links to an admittedly ugly but useful grip-dock for the PSP. It looks to be little more than a modified PS2 controller from here, but includes an intake fan and hand-cooling vents on the handles that should make long stints on the PSP a lot more comfortable.

It also features built-in stereo speakers, dual headphone ports and a rechargeable battery pack and is due to be released on the 24th of August, though no price has been posted yet.

Jack ThompsonChatterbox Video Game Radio have a full 1 hour 20-minute interview with Jack "I Love Grand Theft Auto" Thompson available to download.
The interview was conducted on the 31st of July, and Thompson gives some opinion on the ESRB, the Hot Coffee mod, and how TakeTwo Interactive made a mistake in trying to "play chicken" with Hillary Clinton.

He also goes into how the modding community for The Sims represents an "illicit collaboration" between Electronic Arts and the porn industry, because websites that carry nudity mods for the game carry the name "Sims". According to Thompson, EA don't protect the Sims copyright because it is financially attractive to have porn mods available.

It's all very entertaining, so go check it out here.

Robert LudlumVivendi have snapped up the rights to create games based on the books of Robert Ludlum, the author behind the Bourne Identity and the Bourne Supremacy.

Ludlum had written 21 novels before his death in 2001, though only the Bourne books and Covert One are mentioned in Vivendi's release.

Vivendi say they plan on aggressively pushing Ludlum's creations as game brands, and that they will go head-to-head with the other major spy-action games in the market.

No further details were given, though the release says the novels will inspire "next-generation" games.

Blu-rayThe Blu-ray Disc Association has announced the security features of the Blu-ray, which is set to make some waves next year as part of the Playstation 3.

The discs will include a new feature called ROM Marks that will act as watermarks embedded into music, movies and games; the Marks can only be added using equipment licensed for producing the discs and will prevent the discs from playing on unauthorized BD-ROM players.

Another feature will act as a second defense if hackers come up with cracks or workarounds. "BD+" will essentially be a patching system that allows the rights-management system to be updated when exploits are discovered:

"Content protection is a critical issue for next-generation media distribution," said IDC's Joshua Martin, Associate Research Analyst, Consumer Markets. "Finalizing the content protection scheme is critical for the launch of blue laser optical disc technology, and new protection schemes should allow for increased consumer flexibility while better protecting prerecorded content compared to current DVD technology."

PSPWith the massive popularity of the PSP and its newly released Web browser, a significant population of Web users are going to be hitting your website with the device and it may be worthwhile optimizing it to display properly.

Basically, the page must fit into a 480 pixels wide monitor; this can be a nightmare, but plasticshore.com has posted up some instructions that will allow you to serve your PSP visitors with an alternate stylesheet so no major redesign of the site is needed:

I simply translated the current look and feel into the new environment and had absolutely no trouble doing so. It is all live and running now, so if you have a PSP at hand go ahead and give it a try.

And If you think it is crazy to do all this just to have one’s site work on a portable gaming console - keep in mind, that the same modified CSS files can be used now, to port this site onto any mobile device (small screen) by simply embedding it with the correct media declaration.

Xbox 360A respected market analyst has revealed the planned European Xbox 360 event will take place in Amsterdam on the 4th and 5th of October this year.

Microsoft had announced the X05 event last month, but did not reveal its location. However, P.J. McNealy of American Technologies Research has spilled the beans in a memo sent to investors and the media:

the other big event is expected to be X05 in Amsterdam in early October, where launch titles and hardware are expected to be showcased for developers worldwide.

Microsoft refused to confirm or deny McNealy's claim, saying only "We have not yet confirmed the location".

McNealy also wrote of his expectations for the price of the console in the memo, saying that he believed the November launch was on track and that the price will be about $399, with an optional 20GB hard-drive costing an extra $60-$99.

EA have announced a new study in conjunction with NESTA Futurelab that aims to put computer games into European classrooms. The project will begin with trials in select secondary schools in the U.K. next month, that will see what kids can learn from games and what changes might be needed to introduce games to the classroom environment.

The press release announcing the study points to the intellectual challenge and stimulation games give compared to other media and mentions the study could give developers some guidelines on how to create games that do well in the educational market:

There has been a lot of interest in using computer games for learning but to date no one has really investigated what young people might be able to learn from games and how they might best be introduced in schools. We propose to do this by working closely with teachers and students to design new support materials for use with commercial games. We will evaluate the success of these materials and identify aspects of games that developers could make more relevant to an educational environment. This way we will begin to produce a road map for educators across Europe and go some way to being able to help game developers understand how they could produce games that are well-received in the educational market.

PeekaboomBoingboing link to an interesting project out of Carnegie Mellon University that aims to harness the power of casual gamers and use it to train computers to recognize images.

Peekaboom involves two players, one who has a random image pulled from the Web, and another that must guess what the image represents from portions revealed by the first player. For instance the first player could have an image of a pig, and show player two the portion containing the snout; player one can encourage player two by telling him if his guesses are warm or cold. Behind the scenes, data is collected on which portions were needed to be revealed before player two fully recognized what the entire image was:

"The collected data can be applied towards constructing computer vision algorithms, which require massive amounts of training and testing data not currently available," von Ahn told New Scientist. "The target database will contain millions of images, all fully annotated with information about what objects are in the image, where each object is located, and how much of the image is necessary to recognise it."

SpyingAn interesting write-up from a Swat 4 fan reveals more than you might like to know about the online shooter. The recent patch for Swat 4 introduced 'Massive Streaming Ad Support'.

One gamer speaks of 'suspicious' packets being sent to online ad servers. By using a packet-monitoring tool, they were able to trace the destinations of the packets and even some content.

While playing the latest version of SWAT4 with a friend, we noticed something was rather different. The particular level we were playing was modelled on a random gas station and convieince store.

In the game, the player can enter the store, and is immersed in a realistic environment, including goods for sale on the shelves, and posters advertising fake products on the walls. Until we updated the game to the latest 1.1 patch release.

With the new patch in place, we played the level again. This time, we noticed the posters were actually advertising real products. One told me of a new show on a sci-fi channel, and the other about a new brand of soft drink. We noticed these posters throughout the level. Then I remembered in the patch readme file, the one line that read:

* Added Massive Streaming Ad Support

With this information, we could only wonder what 'massive ad streaming support' was. Obviously it was adding adverts to the game we had already paid $50 for, but we wanted to know how, and what information was it sending to the servers? With these questions in mind, we loaded up our favourite packet dumper.

Resident Evil 4A 'Premium Edition' of Resident Evil 4 is coming to the PS2, according to an article on 1up.com. The game was initially launched on Nintendo's GameCube, when GameStop organized a 'Limited Edition' of the game with Capcom. This edition will be ported over to the PS2 release of the popular franchise.

Apparently this edition is good news for fans as it comes at no extra cost, when compared to the original release. Some features of the 'Premium Edition' include:
  • Resident Evil 4 game
  • Making of Resident Evil 4 DVD
  • Limited Edition Laser Cell of Ada Wong
  • Brady Games' Resident Evil Prologue

The best part? It doesn't cost a dime more to pick up the Premium Edition; right now, it's listed at your standard $49.99. Chance are you'll just have to slap down a pre-order for the survival horror adventure, but that'll net you.

Doom 3The Dark Side of Phobos is a new site project offering fan-made Doom 3 musical mash-ups. This is just one of many projects aimed at tapping into the creativity of the gaming community to create unofficial, non-commercial fan arrangements of entire game soundtracks.

Many games have been given the treatment already, including Sonic 2, Kirby, Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid.

The latest outing is a mix-up of the Doom 3 soundtrack and you can grab the tunes on MP3 or a lossless alternative.

The Dark Side of Phobos was an OverClocked Remix site project that had the intent to mix a large portion of the soundtrack to one of the most important games of the first person shooter genre, DooM. The project was created in the wake of Kong in Concert and was originally maintained by klm09. After some months, the project began to slip away into obscurity and in November of 2004 I was asked to take control of the project and try to salvage it. After months of hard work on the part of all the mixers, controversy and arguments, and artists dropping and picking up songs (amongst other travesties) we are finally here, at the end: The successful completion of The Dark Side of Phobos.

GTA made me do itA jury in Alabama have convicted a 20-year-old man of killing three police officers, while the man pleaded with the jurors, claiming that Grand Theft Auto was somehow involved in the killings.

Apparently the guy tried to please 'not guilty' by reason of mental defect, but the jury were having none of it.

After the shooting, Moore told police that '“Life is a video game, everybody has to die sometime.'” Maybe he should change his motto to: '“Life is a video game, everybody has to be annally raped in a dank Alabama prison every night for the rest of what amounts to their pathetic excuse of a life.'” I suppose that doesn'’t have the same ring to it.

Dell XPS 600After we reported yesterday that Dell will be using two graphics cards in their latest XPS gaming rig, PCMag has a review of the new gaming PC from Dell. This bad-boy is host to two Nvidia 7800 graphics cards, a 3.8-GHz P4 670 processor, 1Gb of ram and a whooping 1Tb (1,000Gb) of harddrive space.

Of course, with a $5,000 price-tag, little-Johnny won't be juggling his SLI configuration anytime soon. Still though, it's always fun to see the bleeding-edge of technology that you can't afford.

The Dell XPS line is all about delivering ultrafast 3D performance to gamers. The Dell Dimension XPS 600 ($4,999 direct, as tested) is the company's follow up to the popular Editors' Choice–winning XPS Gen 5, and it doesn't disappoint.

The XPS 600 packs a serious gaming punch, with an obscene 1TB of hard drive space, a speedy 3.8-GHz P4 670 processor, and two top-of-the-line nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX graphics cards in an SLI configuration. (SLI combines the power of two graphics cards to produce blistering frame rates on many 3D games.) It also comes with the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system and two standard TV tuners. Make no mistake, though, the rationale for getting this system is not to make music but to crush your enemies.

XBox 360A new prediction coming in from analysts Piper Jaffray is suggesting that software giant Micrsoft may be leaving Europe with not nearly enough boxes to fill consumer demand.

Jaffray estimate that when Microsoft launches the Xbox 360 at the end of this year, Europe will only see 400,000 units by January of 2006.

Forbes magazine also reported on the predictions, which would see 1 million Xbox 360s shipping in North America, 400,000 in Europe and 200,000 in Japan.

Piper Jaffray believes that Microsoft will hit a November launch in the USA and Europe, with Japan following a few weeks later - but if their estimate of only 400,000 units in the channel for Europe is correct, the launch in this territory could be affected seriously by shortages.

In terms of software, the analysts believe that Xbox 360 will be accompanied by 15 titles at launch, with 25 to 40 games available by the end of the year - and expect North American software pricing to be $59.99, which almost certainly ties in with the UKP 45 price point suggested by senior sources here last week for Xbox 360 games.

CoffeeRockstar Games have released a patch that disables the Hot Coffee mod which caused them so much bother/priceless publicity.
Rockstar had promised to release the "No More Hot Coffee" patch after two separate investigations on different continents handed down punishments over sex scenes found in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The ESRB in the U.S. imposed an Adult Only rating on the game, which is expected to stymie sales, and the ratings board in Australia outright banned the game in the country by removing it's classification altogether.

More woe over Hot Coffee could be on the way as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission recently announced it would be launching yet another investigation after calls were made by Senator Hillary Clinton.

The patch is available for both U.S. and EU/Australia versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the TakeTwo site. A copy of the changelog is also available here

GAME PSPThe major European retailer GAME has announced that all of their launch-day PSP's have been pre-ordered already, and that only those who ordered theirs before 4pm on the 5th of August are guaranteed to have the console when it launches.

The retailer has now moved on to taking pre-orders for the second batch of consoles, which won't reach GAME until September.
A large retailer like GAME seeing such early high demand raises the question of whether there will be a shortage of PSP's in the U.K. and Europe on 1 September:

Whether or not this situation is the same at all retailers isn't clear. The £179 price was thought to be rather expensive, especially as importing the console proved to be cheaper. However, with Sony clamping down on retailers selling imports, it seems that people are more than willing to pay the money for the handheld.

Reuters is reporting on yet another game-related tragedy, this time in South Korea.

A 28 year-old man identified only by his surname, Lee, has recently died after spending 50 hours playing online games. The report has it that Lee recently gave up his job in order to play more games at a CyberCafe; he started playing on the 3rd of August and didn't stop, save for occasional trips to the bathroom, or to take a brief nap on a makeshift bed. The police have presumed the cause of death was heart failure caused by exhaustion:

After he failed to return home, Lee's mother asked his former colleagues to find him. When they reached the cafe, Lee said he would finish the game and then go home, the paper reported. He died a few minutes later, it said.

DOOM 3 - Resurrection of EvilThe annual QuakeCon convention is due to begin on the 11th of August and id Software have sent out a release detailing what attendees can expect to see.

The first official mention of the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack for the Xbox is contained in the release, and attendees at the convention will be the first to try it out:

Giving fans a sneak-peek at some of the most anticipated upcoming titles has become a tradition, and this year is no different. For the first time ever, QuakeCon attendees will be able to get their hands on DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil for Xbox. Co-developed by Nerve Software and id Software, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil is a stand-alone extension of the DOOM 3® saga and delivers more terror and fast-paced action in mankind's battle to overcome Hell. The game features a fresh storyline with all-new levels, beasts and powerful weapons, including the gravity-defying "Grabber," the time-manipulating "Artifact," and the return of the double barreled Shotgun.

The QuakeCon will also see the unveiling of Quake IV multiplayer - gamers will get the first chance to see the feature, which is said to be based on the style of Quake III Arena.

Other highlights of the conference include a talk by the legendary John Carmack, and a panel discussion about the upcoming DOOM movie.

Tales of Eternia OnlineGamespot reports that Namco have begun a Japan-only closed beta test of Tales of Eternia Online, the company's first-ever foray into the massively-multiplayer-online genre.

The game is derived from Tales of Eternia, an RPG released for the original Playstation in the year 2000; the PS game is better known in the U.S. as Tales of Destiny II.

It's unclear when the final version of Tales of Eternia will be released, or if it will see a release in the U.S. It was originally due for release in spring 2005, but Namco subsequently pushed the release back citing "quality improvement issues".

Xbox 360Gamefront.de has yet another report on the price of the Xbox 360 in Europe. Austrian dealers have said that Microsoft have given them a "non-committal" price of €349 for the console, though the report implies the trade price may be flexible enough to allow retailers to sell as low as €299.

The new report is in line with the price currently expected for the U.K., £249 sterling, which converts to about €360.

Microsoft's J Allard originally said back in May that the Xbox 360 would cost in "the neighborhood" of $300 (about €242, £168) when it launches, but recent speculation has it that Microsoft have been swayed by comments from Sony boss Ken Kutaragi that the PS3 would be "expensive"; rumour has it that Microsoft may raise the Xbox 360 price in response.

Spiderman tech demo for the Playstation 3The dazzling footage we've seen so far for the Xbox 360 and PS3 has raised questions in Adrian Smith, the co-founder of the studio behind the Tomb Raider series.

Smith has cast doubt on whether the consoles will actually be able to render super-detailed characters while a lot of other things are happening on the screen. He also pointed out that the tech demos we've seen may be misleading:

We've seen games with 500 people of a PlayStation 2-type quality or we've seen one character which looks movie-esque.

But Smith - who also co-founded Core, the studio originally responsible for the Tomb Raider series - warns that such images may not be representative of what is actually possible.

"I don't know at this moment in time that either the PS3 or Xbox 360 has the ultimate power to do such massive, high quality main characters in environments with lots of things happening.

While casting doubt on the visual capabilities of the next-gen consoles, Smith talked about what he thinks will be the true technical leap for this generation of gaming:

The level of interaction that you're going to have with a game is going to rocket. Players are going to be able to really interact with the environment like they've always wanted to.

Massive INC. In-Game AdsMassive Inc's in-game billboard ads are set to appear in Sony Online Entertainment's MMOG PlanetSide. Massive announced SOE had joined their Massive Network yesterday, and that the ads are due to begin appearing in the game later in August.

SOE is just the latest big-hitter to join the Massive Network; Vivendi, Ubisoft, Eidos and Atari have already signed up in what's set to become the norm for online games.

Massive's technology injects ads into certain game locations selected by the developers, opening up a lucrative new money-stream for game producers.
PlanetSide will feature relatively innocuous billboards, though Massive also provide them the option of streaming full-motion video and audio ads if they so choose.

GameSpotGameSpot has started a new subscription-based service for online gamers. Dubbed a 'premium gaming service', for $9.99 a month gamers will be able to play at the highest speed connections in the most popular online games, with discussion groups, voice-chat services and even gaming tournaments.

Of course, most of what they offer is already freely available on the Internet, but GameCenter product manager Sam Parker points out that this new approach takes a lot of the hassle out of online gaming.

GameCenter will allow players to host their own online games. That means it will allow them to configure a Battlefield 2 game and customize it to their tastes so that as many as 64 players can fight it out without annoying hiccups in broadband service that slow down a game and make it all but impossible to play. About 11 games are available through GameCenter now.

GameCenter will be able to offer server hosting because it is leasing computing power from Super Computer International, an Atlanta Internet hosting company. GameCenter will be able to tap data centers on both the East Coast and West Coast to provide plenty of high-speed service, or bandwidth, to gamers.

Dell appear to be stepping on the gaming pedal lately, in news that they are incorporating Nvidia's SLI technology into their new gaming rigs. The new XPS 600, which will be debuting in the next few weeks, is set to feature two PCI-Express x16 slots, each of which will be loaded with Nvidia's very latest GeForce 7800 GTX graphics card.

ATI also have a double-barrel solution in the form of 'Crossfire' which has recently been delayed until September, but which is basically the same deal as SLI, two cards being better than one. It also equates to financial woes for anyone looking to go down that avenue.

Starting at $3,099 with a Pentium 4 single core processor, Dell's XPS 600 will automatically ship with Windows XP Home and come with a 160GB hard drive, dual 16X DVD-ROM and 48X CD-RW drives and 512MB of advanced computer memory.

Dell is also offering a combination of the two Nvidia cards with an Intel Extreme Edition 8xx series dual-core processor (two computer brains on one piece of silicon).

Dell and Nvidia, which have collaborated many times in the past, are expected to show off the new PC at id Software's QuakeCon 2005 computer game event next Monday.

Nes MouseIt always amazes me, the level of creativity out there. Take this one guy who picked up two Nes controllers from the Salvation Army and turned them into a laser-mouse for the PC.

If you are like me you get really excited when you find two Nintendo controllers at the Salvation Army. One was priced at $1.00 and the other at $.37 (i didn't fight the pricing). Of course, they get home and meanwhile occupy a part of my brain that is like a broken stove. There is this back burner that is constantly on. Ideas get on there and just simmer away. So the idea for one of the controllers was to make it a card reader that i can plug my sd or compact flash cards into to transfer files. Sunday morning i came up with my idea for the second one... make it a mouse.

stale breadAlthough this article shouldn't really be all too surprising, I still can't help but be taken back by it. The new York Times are reporting that out of the 26 games EA is releasing this year, a staggering 25 of them are not new games at all, rather just continuations of aging franchises.

By year's end, Electronic Arts plans to release 26 new games, all but one of them a sequel, including the 16th version of N.H.L. Hockey, the 11th of the racing game Need for Speed and the 13th of the P.G.A. Tour golf game. The company also relies heavily on creating games based on movies like the James Bond and Lord of the Rings series, rather than developing original brands.

Gamers appear to be coming less and less interested in EA's game make-overs. I guess there really is only so much innovation you can throw into the same product, and that really seems to be enticing less and less fans to pick up the 'new' game each year that they have already paid for six times over.

Electronic Arts, based in Redwood City, Calif., recently lowered its full-year revenue estimates to $3.3 billion to $3.4 billion, from $3.4 billion to $3.5 billion, in part blaming a delay in the release of its game The Godfather, which will not be sold until next spring. The eagerly awaited game, based on the mobster movies, was supposed to be out over the holidays, when the game industry makes about 50 percent of its annual sales. But the company said it was still making improvements. The sizable financial effect of that delay is precisely the kind of trouble Electronic Arts avoids by putting out sequels. The company has been profitable over the years because it has been able to smooth out the volatility of its business with games that sell year after year.

BarbieVivendi Universal has announced it will be publishing games based on straight-to-DVD Barbie films this September. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus is coming to the PC and Game Boy Advance, while My Scene Goes to Hollywood will be a PC only endeavour.

The adventure game Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus presumably follows the plot of the movie as Barbie takes the role of Princess Annika and attempts to stop an evil wizard that has turned her kingdom to stone. The game will include 20 levels of minigames, puzzles, and other obstacles.

In My Scene Goes to Hollywood video game, the My Scene girls--a Barbie spin-off line that includes the Barbie, Madison, Chelsea, Nolee, and Delancey dolls--create their very own movie, and players must help them write the script, design sets, and do the hairstyles for the production. In the end, the My Scene girls will attend the premiere for the movie.

Both games will retail for an estimated $29.99.

XBox 360 Power ButtonsAccording to an article over on GamesIndustry.biz, highly placed sources in the UK industry have leaked information concerning the Xbox 360 launch date. The sources claim that November 25th will see the launch of Microsoft's next-gen console in Europe. Also worth taking note, the price tag is expected to rise above the initial said-price to UKP 299.

The sources also claim that the official word will come from the horse's mouth to its trade partners on the 15th of this month. Microsoft are purportedly undecided on the price tag, ever since our man Kutaragi hit home that it 'will be expensive', when discussing the Playstation 3. The original suggested price was UKP 249, but the sources claim this may rise to UKP 299 to at least seem credible against the PS3 tag.

Even allowing for the higher tax rates here in Europe, a UKP 299 price point would translate as around $500 in the US, which is significantly higher than is currently anticipated by most market watchers - among whom the general consensus is that the system will launch at $300, suggesting a UK price point of under UKP 200.

One area of pricing which our independent sources were more certain of was the pricing of software, with Xbox 360 titles likely to hit shelves at around UKP 44.99 - a price premium over current generation software which Microsoft is said to be unhappy with, but which has been driven by demands from third party publishers.

When contacted concerning the matter, Microsoft declined to comment. At least we know there's not that long left to wait. Hopefully MS will clear things up on the 15th and we can end the speculation and predictions.

Xbox 360Financial advising firm Piper Jaffray has released a report offering predictions on various aspects of the November launch of the Xbox 360.

The firm said the November launch is on track for the U.S. and Europe, while saying the console will likely launch a couple of weeks later in Japan.

They also gave an estimate on how many units will ship to the various territories: 1 million in the U.S, 400,000 in Europe and 200,000 shipping in Japan by the end of the year.

Interestingly, Piper Jaffray also expect that two versions of the Xbox 360 will retail, one at $299, with the other at around $399.
The more expensive model would include extra hardware like hard-drive and second controller:

Microsoft also would not provide specific pricing information about the Xbox 360, but Piper Jaffray expects Microsoft will make one unit available at $299, and another unit near $399, with the more expensive unit including "additional hardware components (e.g., hard-drive option, extra controller, memory option) that core users will likely buy anyway."

GVS Remote Controlled HumanForbes has a report on an interesting new technology that was recently shown at the 2005 SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference.
Attendees witnessed a woman wearing a funny pair of headphones who strained to keep balanced while researchers steered her with a remote control.

The headphones send a light electrical current to an area behind the ears that controls movement and balance; a weak current is enough to throw you off balance while a stronger one can alter your movement.

One of the commercial exploitations of the technology might be in gaming, and the researchers demonstrated this with a racing game created for the event:

The most persuasive commercial applications of Maeda's GVS device will most likely be in gaming; researchers put together a crude virtual racing game to demonstrate how GVS heightened the perception of centrifugal force as users watch the car wind its way around the track on a video screen. Manabu Sakurai, NTT's marketing manager, says the company is currently investigating whether or not gamers would be interested in the device. Flight simulators are another area of interest.

"Many people talk about that," Sakurai explained. "Because GVS causes you to feel the same kinds of motion as a large-scale flight simulator, it could be a much simpler and more cost-effective way to train people."

Prey

Gamespot have published a new in-depth preview of the upcoming PC/X360 shooter Prey, as well as a new batch of screenshots.
The game was initially begun way back in 1995 but was subsequently shelved while 3D Realms worked on Duke Nukem Forever, which still has not surfaced. At the E3, 2K Games and 3D Realms surprise-announced development on Prey had been restarted. The game is being developed by Human Head Studios with supervision provided by 3D Realms.

The new preview is a good intro to the story, and sheds some light on the features; for instance the character will be able to have out-of-body experiences that let him float ahead of his corporeal body and gain access to locked areas.
Another interesting angle taken in the game is the concept of "death-walking": rather than the boring standard of returning to your last save-point when the character dies, in Prey he has to fight his way back from the afterlife to the land of the living:

When death walking, Tommy takes on his spirit form on an otherworldly plateau in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by howling spirits that he must fend off with his longbow. Once he begins fighting spirits, he has only a limited amount of time before the earth beneath his feet swallows him up and drags him back into the world of the living (or in Tommy's case, the spaceship of the living). The more spirits he can kill off with his bow, the more health he'll recover before he returns.

Lik-SangSony has initiated legal action against Hong Kong e-tailer Lik-Sang.com after the site sold PSP's to European customers - the PSP has not been officially released in that territory yet. Likely to be the source of Sony's wrath is an offer of free worldwide shipping for the PSP that Lik-Sang announced last month; the 205 countries covered by the offer includes the U.K. and European countries.

Lik-Sang called Sony's action a "total surprise" and described it as "cynical". They state they will do their best to fight Sony's charges, and were thankful of support from employees, friends and customers of the site.

The new lawsuit is just the latest in a string of such actions Sony have taken against smaller companies who sell the PSP in Europe before its official release in September. Last month, Sony successfully won an injunction against Nuplayer.com, who had to cease importing the console and pay substantial damages, while back in June they won a temporary injunction ordering Electricbirdland.com to cease selling the imported consoles. Electricbirdland is expected to make its defence against Sony when the two companies meet again in court later this month.

When will it end?The lawyer you hate to hate is up to his old shenanigans. This time, embittered anti-game lawyer Jack Thompson is taking aim at Capcom's Killer 7 for purportedly containing a 'fully-blown sex scene'. It seems that San Andreas and Sims 2 were only the beginning for the much hated anti-game lawyer.

Jack Thompson is nothing more than the boy who cried wolf. While his tactics are effective at first, eventually people will get sick of him blowing the whistle on anything that seems inappropriate to him. When they do, he will be left flapping is jaws and wondering why no one is listening to him.

If he wanted to go after GTA and get it an AO rating for the violence, I'd probably be fine with that. Considering the amount of violence in the game, it's not too hard for anyone who's ever played it to say it may be inappropriate for a majority of younger teenagers. Consider, for example, the movie Titanic in which you could see a breast that wasn't a really poor and clunky animation rendered on 5 year old hardware. This movie was rated PG-13. Consider several R rated movies with sex scenes that are more pornographic than the comical and largely unerotic scene in San Andreas.

This is merely the latest Salem witch trial. Eventually the whole thing will blow over. Eventually, Jack Thompson, like Senator McCarthy will go so far over the top that he will lose credibility. I think that this has already happened to an extent when he went after The Sims 2. When he does go, I can honestly say that I won't miss him one bit. Goodbye, moronic fuckwad.

This is surely the most impressive modded Xbox I have seen this side of 2005. Some guy really went all out for this one, and now he has to sell it. It also includes the Media Center OS for streaming videos from the 'net and such. The guy is looking for $350 and this might seem a little harsh for an aging console, but if you're into the creativity it might be worth taking a look at.

I just clicked on this picture and wow. Granted, people have been modding Xbox consoles since their release date, but this is a very nice package. Poor guy, he has to sell it, but damn if it isn'’t nice to look at. If you are not saving for a 360 or you just have some money to burn for the sake of art, give this a consideration.

Battlefield 2EA has taken their latest mod-editing tool for Battlefield 2 out of closed beta. It is now available for the public to beta test if they wish. The app is 50.5Mb in size and allows gamers to create their own multiplayer mods.

Although EA has made clear that the software is a little 'rough around the edges', so if you're looking for something bug-free then you might want to steer clear of this one but if you don't mind the odd glitch, why not give it a try.

The new tool isn't completely functional at the moment (Battlefield mod coordinator Lawrence Brown warns that it's "a little rough around the edges"), but most of the core functionality is there. Future updates to the tool will include a single-player editor and a patch to allow mods to work with Battlefield 2 dedicated server files.

EA is also expected to launch a website for the BF2 modding community, which will include detailed instructions on how to create mods for the popular online shooter as well as a downloads section with forums.

Doom on Ipod
Just when you thought iPods couldn't get any cooler, now if you play your cards right (or rather, install your Linux right) you can play the classic Doom game from id Software on your iPod. Head on over to ipodlinux.org for instructions on installing the open-source os onto your iPod.

Don't forget to check out the two cool videos they have posted, as if you needed and convincing.

Super Mario BrothersI stumbled across this cool site that explains how to perform the well (and not-so-well) known cheats and tricks of the classic Super Mario Brothers games. The site has an impressive list of instructions detailing some of the glitches found in both the Nes and Super-Nes versions of Nintendo's classic franchise.

If there's a trick or glitch that was missed that you want explained or if you don't think something is explained well enough, feel free to point it out at IRC or the forums. If you are an editor, you can add it in yourself if you know the game well.Note: Performing the tricks at this page often require very high precision. If you are using the "standard" Famtasia, that is 20 fps, you might want to patch it to 60 fps (or rather, use a different emulator such as FCE Ultra).

SG1JoWood has regretfully announced that development of Stargate-SG1 with partner 'Perception', has been put on ice. The game was due for release in October of this year, but the developers stress that the game in its current state does not meet their quality requirements nor will it satisfy their fans.

We will not release anything that does not do justice to this well known license. In recent months we have invested a lot of time and resources in helping Perception finish the development, but we now simply have lost confidence in their ability to finish this project in time and sufficient quality.

We all knew that Microsoft earlier announced support for the PSP with their upcoming Xbox 360 console. Well, one lucky individual with an Xbox 360 dev-kit has sent in screenshots of the PSP in action.

Xbox365.com are hosting the images which appear to be the user-interface of the Xbox 360 clearly showing the PSP being used to upload photos onto the harddrive.

The user's name and any possible link to their identity has been smudged out but the pics look pretty genuine, although they cannot be confirmed as authentic just yet.

I finally got an xbox360 dev kit today, and was able to see how well it interacts with the PSP. It worked great - I was able to listen to mp3s right off the PSP through the Xbox360 Music Player, and view images from the PSP at full screen.

Anyway, here's what it looks like in the Xbox360 Dashboard

One of the hlfallout crew has snagged an interview with a co-founder of the highly anticipated 'Black Mesa: Source' Half Life 2 mod. BM: S is a total Source conversion of 1998's classic first person shooter, Half Life using the new technology available from Valve's Source engine to soup the old classic up with new features.

Valve earlier released Half Life: Source, which yielded little excitement from fans. HL: Source was basically the Half Life game with a few new Source features but visually pretty similar to the original.

The Black Mesa: Source team are working on a total conversion of the classic shooter, bringing in all aspects of Valve's Source engine. Hlfallout has some exclusive screens of the game, which is still a 'work-in-progress'.

HL Fallout: On the subject of maps, will we experience any major differences between Black Mesa: Source and HL1, and if there are changes, how do you feel this will affect the game play?

Denzil: Major differences... not that I can think of, we are expanding the environments to make the facility and outdoor areas feel more realistic and used, but we do not want to deviate the levels too much. For example we will be creating run off rooms adjacent to the main path you take through the facility, many will be just for show to make it feel more like a working environment, whereas some will be there with some nice eye candy or ammo et cetera.
