Day of Defeat: Source

Valve have announced Day of Defeat: Source is set for release on the 26th of this month, and pre-orders are set to begin next week.

The game will be available over Steam for $19.95, or can be picked up as part of the Counter-Strike: Source retail pack or the Half-Life 2 Silver and Gold Steam packages.

Similar to the release of Half-Life 2, players who pre-order will be able to pre-load the game and begin playing the instant it is released.

As well as the physics and graphical improvements offered by the Source engine, DoD: Source is also set to include support for High-Dynamic Range, the new lighting technology that Valve are working into the HL2 add-ons, Aftermath and The Lost Coast.

Xbox 360It's looking like Microsoft have a price-hike planned for Xbox 360 games.
The U.S. giant has confirmed that the Xbox 360 title Perfect Dark Zero will have a suggested retail price (SRP) of £44.99 in the U.K.

By comparison, the SRP of current Xbox games is usually set at £39.99, though the common price at launch is generally £34.99 due to a standard discount.

According to Eurogamer, some retailers are listing PDZ and other Xbox 360 games at £39.99, presumably with the £5 standard discount in place, while some of the games are priced as high as £49.99.

All this suggests that gamers should expect to pay no less than £40 for an Xbox 360 game when the console launches:

... most retailers [are] stocking the likes of Perfect Dark Zero (standard edition) and Kameo: Elements of Power for £39.99 - presumably representing the standard discount - and £44.99 in other cases.

Worryingly, a number of third-party titles cost even more. The same retailers asking for £39.99 for PD Zero and Kameo want £44.99 for Ubisoft's multiformat titles King Kong and Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, while others are charging as much as £49.99. Likewise Call of Duty 2 and Need For Speed: Most Wanted.

In other words, you're going to be hard-pressed to buy an Xbox 360 game without spending £40, and probably £45 in many cases.

Xbox 360 controllerIt's looking hopeful that we will see some playable demos of Xbox 360 games at next week's Tokyo Games Show.

The respected Famitsu magazine has released a lineup of the event, and confirm that 3 of the Xbox 360 games, Namco's Ridge Racer 6, Rare's Kameo: Elements of Force and Taito's World Air Force, will appear as playable demos:

The biggest surprise by Famitsu is that Namco's Ridge Racer 6 for the Xbox 360 will be playable at the show, even though no screenshots or trailers for the game have been released yet. The magazine also reports that the general public will get its first chance to try out Kameo: Elements of Power, created by Microsoft-owned, UK-based development studio Rare. Another Xbox 360 game to be playable at the show is Taito's jet combat simulator World Air Force, which fully takes advantage of the console's calculation capacity for real-time physics.

Only trailers are to be shown for the other Xbox 360 games according to Famitsu, except for Koei's Dynasty Warriors 5 Special, the format of which is yet to be announced.

While the Xbox 360 list includes some juicy new details, details of the Playstation 3 games on show are pretty thin on the ground at this point.

Famitsu's preliminary list only features two PS3 games that will have trailers on display; Metal Gear Solid 4 and Koei's Ni-Oh.

Latin text on Origen Xbox 360The strange, Microsoft-owned OrigenXbox360.com has gotten its weekly update. The site now sports two rabbits whereas before it only had one, and two more pieces of fruit now hang from the tree.

In addition, an eagle-eyed player spied some tiny text printed on a root at the base of the tree-trunk, which on closer inspection turned out to be a Latin sentence that translates as: "In this space our tree blooms abundant with the unknown fruits of Elysium, which will imitate in the place chosen, surrounded by the angels of Origen".

Your guess is as good as mine as to what that signifies except maybe that this ARG (if that's what it is) is shaping up to be the most obscure yet from Microsoft.

To follow developments in more depth, these lengthy threads on the official Xbox forums and Unfiction.com are good places to go for the latest information.

Blu RayKen Kutaragi warned us in advance that the PS3 would be expensive, and even suggested we ask the boss for more hours in order to get one. According to reports on the 'Net, one of the main culprits for the high price is the Blu Ray drive, which is set to cost Sony a pretty penny when the console launches.

The Inquirer reports that the company will have to pay $100 for each drive, which is given perspective by comparing the price of including a DVD-RW in the Xbox 360 - a DVD-RW can be picked up in a retail store for $50 now, and MS would be able to bulk-buy them at significantly less than that price:

[...] it's a very expensive step that Sony is willing to take as it will increase cost of Playstation 3 unit dramatically. Sony said Playstation 3 is going the be expensive and this is one of the reasons why.

Microsoft is playing a safe game here, it will launch with DVD+RW but in some point in the future might release a new Xbox 360 version with HD-DVD or a Blu Ray drive. We don’t expect that this will happen anytime soon, but we are sure it will happen at some point in the next few years.

Playstation 3 Blu Ray drive will cost Sony $100+ via Slashdot

Day of Defeat Source Allied Rifleman Player ModelValve have been teasing Day of Defeat fans for the best part of a year over when the Source conversion of the WWII shooter would see a release. But things are looking up after last Friday's Steam Update included the most specific date from the company so far.

Valve say they aren't quite ready to announce an exact date, but that they are "confident that it will happen in September".

They went on to say there will be a period of one week (at minimum) before the release that gamers will be able to pre-order the game and pre-load it so they can begin playing instantly it is released.

The game will be available as a stand-alone purchase through Steam, or as part of the Counter-Strike: Source retail box. Gamers who bought the Silver or Gold Half-Life 2 packages will also be able to play automatically.

As an extra sweetener, Valve included two new player models in the update, which can be viewed on the Steam Website.

Microsoft Laser Mouse 6000Microsoft have announced the Laser Mouse 6000, a snazzy looking mouse designed specifically for gaming.

The ergonomically-designed mouse uses advanced laser technology to provide greater accuracy and comes with a programmable "Gaming Toggle" that you can set up to choose your favourite weapons/items/frequent action sequences with one push of a button.

In addition, the wire is ultra-thin, which Microsoft claim gives the "closest feeling to wireless while still having a wire".

Other features include a new Magnifier tool and a Precision Booster that lets you switch between ultra-fast mouse speed and more precise control for targeting.

The Laser Mouse 6000 is set for widespread availability in October and will cost $54.95.

Microsoft also announced that the Xbox 360 controller for Windows is set to launch in November; the wired controller will work with Windows XP based PC's as well as the Xbox 360 itself and will be priced $44.95.

PSPAccording to Chart-Track, a monitoring firm that tracks over-the-counter retail sales in the U.K. and Ireland, Sony shifted 185,000 PSP's in the first four days of its release to become the fastest-selling console of all time in the U.K. To illustrate the level of success for PSP, the rival Nintendo DS sold 87,000 units in its first week back in March according to the BBC.

Further, of the 24 PSP games at launch, 20 of them have made it into the All Formats Chart, which tracks game sales across all platforms. Ridge Racer for PSP in particular has been very popular:

20 out of the 24 PSP launch titles enter the All Formats Top 40 with Sony’s ‘Ridge Racer’ (PSP) topping the list, knocking Codemasters’ ‘Brian Lara International Cricket 2005’ (PS2/XB/PC) down to No2 and becoming not only the fastest selling PSP game but also the fastest selling Ridge Racer game across any format. 1 in 5 people who bought a PSP game bought ‘Ridge Racer’, but it was over 6 years ago since a Ridge Racer title reached number 1 in the All Formats chart with Ridge Racer Type 4 (PS1) back in week 17 1999.

World of Warcraft

CNN's Game Over column has a feature covering the mammoth success Blizzard have had with World of Warcraft, and tucked away near the end the company reiterate they have no current plans for a console version, despite console makers showing an interest:

"While there is an interest [from console makers] and while that sounds cool to us, we're not going down that road at this time," said [Blizzard's VP of business operations, Paul] Sams. "Once we get to the point where we feel we've achieved best of class and it's sustainable... then we'll start contemplating those types of things."

Back in June, it was rumoured that Microsoft had tried to snag WoW as a title for the Xbox 360, but Blizzard turned them down, citing the lack of keyboard and mouse as obstacles to successfully porting the game.

The CNN feature also sheds some light on Blizzard's strategy (and eventual success) with regard to China.
With Warcraft III, the company tackled the widespread piracy in the country by releasing the game at a reduced price that was "within arms reach" of the price of a pirated copy:

"The idea was let's create a real market of authentic players and see if we can change the mindset," said Sams. "Let's see if we can change the mindset by showing we're willing to meet them partway."

The gamble worked. While there were still millions of pirated copies available, Blizzard sold 1 million authorized copies. More importantly, it established a larger brand awareness of the "Warcraft" name. When "World of Warcraft" (which is essentially pirate-proof, since players must log on to Blizzard servers and pay if they wish to play) went on sale, Chinese gamers bought it in droves. At present, there are more than 1.5 million paying players there.

MYSTCyan Worlds, the creator of the classic MYST series of games have all but closed up shop after failing to secure financial backing for their future projects.

Of the company's 40 employees, all have been laid off apart from co-founder Rand Miller and president Tony Fryman.

The news is surprising when you consider MYST was once the best selling game in history, only conceding the title after many years to the megapopular The Sims:

It may seem unfathomable for the company whose Myst and Riven games have exceeded 12 million units sold worldwide to fall on such troubled times. Unfortunately, the company risked many years and millions of dollars to develop the ambitious Uru, which ultimately failed to capture the massively-multiplayer audience it hoped to reach, leaving Cyan with financial burdens too deep to overcome.

There may be a ray of hope for Cyan fans however; Cyan's Bill Slease has said on his blog that the move is purely financial, and if the situation picks up in the future, Miller and Fryman plan on re-hiring any members of the team that haven't moved on.

End of Ages, the fifth instalment of MYST is set to be released on the 20th of this month, and will be the final part of the long-running saga.

The Japanese invasion of China in the thirties and forties is to get it's very own MMORPG, with a decidely pro-Chinese perspective.

"Anti-Japan War Online" is being developed by a Chinese online gaming firm, and reflects the especial bitterness the Chinese have over the invasion, which by all accounts was particularly cruel and barbaric (if you have the stomach for some heavy-duty horror, check these articles about the Nanking Massacre and the secret Japanese "Unit 731").

To make the Japanese "baddy" in the game as clearcut as possible, the Japanese soldiers have been made to look extra-ugly, and players don't have the choice of playing the game from the Japanese perspective:

"Our developers hate Japan, so they want to make the game very provocative, but the team leaders have tried to tone down the violence," said the project manager, Liu Junfeng of PowerNet Technology, a Shenzhen-based gaming company.

"Anti-Japan War Online is a patriotic online game that is both interesting and instructive to young players," the youth league's Chen Xiao said. "We will play close attention to the authenticity of historical facts in the game."

Resident Evil 5When Resident Evil 5 was announced in July, the first thing people picked up on was that there was no mention of a Nintendo Revolution version - unusual since RE4 was originally a GameCube exclusive.

Now Cubed3.com is reporting that the game is in development for Revolution, and that the only reason it hasn't been announced yet is purely because the specs and other details of the system have not been made publicly available.

This makes sense since at this stage we don't even know what the Revolution controller looks like, but Joystiq are taking the news with a bit of caution because neither Capcom nor Nintendo have made their own announcement of a Revolution version yet:

One problem with the claim is that he does not mention from whom he heard this story. Another is that the prior claim of Revolution’s hopeful Resident Evil 5 announcement also came from Cubed3. So who knows? We will try to confirm or disprove this as soon and as best as we can. In the meantime, feel free to be hopeful, but do not be surprised if you are let down.

Project Gotham Racing 3TalkXbox.com were recently invited to a swanky Need for Speed Most Wanted Community Day set up by EA, and got to have an inside look at the game and talk to developers about their expectations.

Interestingly, when asked about the game's prospects going up against the very impressive looking Project Gotham Racing 3 at the launch of the Xbox 360, the developers had a nonchalant attitude because none of them actually expect PGR3 to make it as a launch title. In fact, most of the EA developers said they expected it would launch as part of the second wave of titles for the console:

I asked about PGR3 and how they are planning to market Most Wanted with another racing title launching so close. The answer: most everyone there at EAX doesn’t expect PGR3 to make launch. Microsoft has apparently been giving EA all the help they can give with getting Most Wanted out at launch (which they are on track to do), and they wouldn’t be doing that as much as they are if they had their own racing game ready for launch. Also, PGR3 is very ambitious, and from what they’ve seen it won’t make launch. Most of them expect it to be in the second wave of 360 titles, along with Gears of War.

To throw fuel on the fire, when asked if PGR3 may not make the X360 launch, Microsoft gave a guarded, if not evasive statement:

"We haven't announced our launch line up yet, but we expect to have between 25-40 games at retail this calendar year," a spokesperson told GameSpot. "There are 160 Xbox 360 games in development right now from companies like Electronic Arts, Activision, Microsoft Game Studios, etc."
