Robert Kotick, the chief executive at Activision has given a speech at an investment conference in the U.S., predicting both good and bad news for gamers.

Kotick predicted that next-generation games will likely cost about $10 more than a current-gen title, and said that he expected developers to rapidly move away from creating games for the PS2, Xbox and GameCube as the new and improved hardware becomes available.

On the plus side, he said we are also likely to see price drops on all current-gen games in 2006:

This week, though, a major industry player predicted that gamers will soon be able to save money for a change. Speaking to the Bank of America Investment Conference in San Francisco, Activision CEO Robert Kotick told the audience that in 2006, "You're likely to see price declines on the older-generation software."

SWAT 4: The Stetchkov Syndicate

VU Games have revealed an expansion pack is in development for the popular FPS SWAT 4 and is due to be released in the first quarter of 2006.

Entitled The Stetchkov Syndicate, the expansion will add 7 new single and multiplayer levels to the game as well as new weapons for both the SWAT and the suspects. The expansion will see the crime level rising on the streets, with an eastern European crime family at the root of the problem. The SWAT will be sent in to take care of the disturbances, fighting through to a final battle with the ruthless Stetchkov Syndicate.

Other new features include in-game voice communication with other players through VoIP, the option for 10 players to play together with 2 teams of up to 5 and a new Smash & Grab option for multiplayer.

No specific release date or price information for The Stetchkov Syndicate has yet been announced, though a batch of screenshots is available to view here.

MYST V: End of AgesCyan Worlds have announced the fifth and final part of the much-loved MYST series has been released to retail.

The standard version of MYST V: End of Ages is available to buy for $49.99, while paying an extra 10 dollars for the Limited Edition will get you an extra 22-min video covering the making of the entire MYST franchise, the original MYST V soundtrack, a frameable collector's art piece and the official strategy guide.

The release follows the surprise announcement earlier this month that Cyan would be drastically cutting back its staff from forty to two because it was unable to secure financial backing for future projects.
Some hope remains that the company will bounce back however; they have said they intend to bring back any employees who haven't moved on if things pick up in the future.

GameMan SystemAs part of a project at university, an art student has fashioned himself a 3 foot GameBoy complete with custom cartridges weighing 8lb. The GameMan System was actually intended to be much larger (7 feet) and is powered by an old P200 computer that he modified. It's also fully playable and there are currently 5 games to choose from including Tetris and Super Mario Land:

Q: So I understand it was your senior project... but why a large Gameboy?

A: My original plan was to make a huge 8-ft long NES controller that you would stand on and hit the buttons with your feet. As I began to plan for that project, I came up with the idea of making a huge GameBoy instead.

WWW.CITIZENSUNITEDNEGATINGTECHNOLOGY.ORGAnti-game lawyer Jack Thompson's crusade against Rockstar Games has earned himself a spot in the viral-marketing campaign for Grand Theft Auto for the PSP, and as you'd expect he's not best pleased about it.

The official website for GTA: Liberty City Stories includes the mock "Inbox" of a reporter at the fictional Liberty Tree newspaper that you can browse through.

One of the spoof emails is a not so subtle parody of Thompson; it's from a JT@citizensunitednegatingtechnology.org, who raves against the evils of the Internet, computer games and liberals:

The fact is, this may be an e-mail, but I am revolted with myself, and will punish myself, vigorously. We need to be free from the internet. It's getting mankind in a hideous and vice-like grip and before you know it, our lives, which were once perfect, will be reduced to nothing but cyber sex and learning things we have no business knowing, like the fact the government lies, or you can safely go on vacation outside the old 48 contiguous. It's revolting, and we're all suffering.

Only last week, I was using the internet to look up some information for my 15 year old niece, who is a keen water skier and state wide sailor. Trust me when I say this - searching under the subject matter "Teenage girls water sports" is not for the faint hearted. The fact is people who care about our society really should join our society. CLICK WWW.CITIZENSUNITEDNEGATINGTECHNOLOGY.ORG FOR MORE DETAILS.

Thompson failed to see the funny side, and shortly after the site was launched sent an email to GamePolitics.com accusing Rockstar of trying to paint him as a "bisexual paedophile" with the prank:

"When you click on the fake e-mail, banner headlined at the tope of the home page, from "JT," the Miami, Florida (Liberty City) anti-violent video game crusader, you will find that JT (Jack Thompson) likes to surf the Internet for pictures depicting deviant sex acts by teenage girls. Additionally, there is at the site an audio ad featuring a man whose name is "Jack" who is found naked by a mother in her son's room. Bisexual pedophile Jack Thompson is the combined message."

World of WarcraftThe recently introduced version 1.7 patch for World of Warcraft included a new area called Zul'Gurub for players to explore, but it appears it also contained a virulent plague that is spreading throughout the game and killing any players under level 50 it comes in contact with.

If you get into a fight with the Hakkar in Zul'Gurub, there's a good chance he will use a spell called Corrupted Blood on you - the strong spell kills most, but the ones it doesn't become infectious and spread Corrupted Blood on to others.

Apparently there have been attempts to quarantine the plague, but according to a report on Shacknews it is out of control on some servers:

It starts spreading amongst the genral population including npcs, who can out generate the damage. Some servers have gotten so bad that you can't go into the major cities without getting the plague (and anyone less than like level 50 nearly immediately die).

GM's even tried quarantining players in certain areas, but the players kept escaping the quarentine and infect other players.

Okay, you absolutely MUST do a story on the recent Plague that is affecting world of warcraft... via The Register
