Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesWow, I thought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would have been forever consigned to history at this stage, but it was news to me that an animated series was produced as recently as 2003.
And it has just been announced the venerable franchise is going to make an even bigger comeback next year in a new, completely CG-generated movie and a set of new console games from Ubisoft.

There are no details as of yet on the games, but we do know the light-hearted theme of the 90's cartoon series won't be making a comeback in the movie. The PG-rated movie will "derive its tone" from the original comic books, and will be even grittier than the previous movies (which I seem to remember weren't all that light to begin with).

For more details on the movie, check the official site.

GTA made me do it
A group of Florida Legislators are trying to jump on the game banning bandwagon. They want to make it illegal to sell or rent games rated for violence or mature content to children under the age of 18.

Following in the footsteps of other states, such as California, and a proposed law put up by U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Joe Lieberman, the Florida proposal would include a 60-day jail sentence and a $500 fine for those who sell or rent games marked as mature to minors.

While laws of this nature seem futile, as evidenced by a judge’s ruling that California’s proposal was unconstitutional, lawmakers across the country continue to try and pass them anyway. Maybe it’s easier for them to waste time in an attempt to baby sit America’s youth than it is for them to come up with ways to pull the pork out of local, state and federal budgets or, god forbid, address issues such as violent crime and punishment, Social Security reform or ethics violations within their own ranks?

Maybe they continue to try and fight the losing battle simply to appease constituents who would rather let government raise their children than have to do the dirty work of saying no themselves? Or maybe, just maybe these folks actually think it’s possible to legislate morality effectively?

On the upside, Florida Governor Jeb Bush opposed the idea of the ban, saying parents, not lawmakers, should regulate what kids watch.

A politician with common sense? It can’t be!

dungeons & dragons
European gamers itching for their chance to check out Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach got some good news today when the official European online portal went live.

It seems it won’t be too much longer before players in both Europe and North America will be battling orcs, bugbears and other baddies in the MMORPG that is based on good old fashion paper and pencil D&D rules.

The new web site contains daily news and community information about the game, which does not have a set European launch date as of yet. The North American launch has been set for Feb. 28. Pre-orders are now being taken in North America and special purchases are available that allow players there to get in on beta testing.

The European web site is written in three languages: English, French and German. It is the official location for all European activity related to the game.

According to the official release issues by Atari, Codemasters and Turbine, European beta testing will begin soon. Players can sign up for beta testing on the site.

After much work we are extremely excited to finally launch our dedicated European portal for Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach," commented Samantha Russell, Community Manager at Codemasters. "We already have an extensive line-up of activity and updates planned for the site in the coming months and encourage all of our European fans to check out the website as soon as they can."

D&D
With a little more than a month to go, the countdown for the much-anticipated unveiling of Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach has begun.

Turbine, the company developing the game, has launched its preorder package for the title that is based on the good old-fashioned paper and pencil version of the game.

Players who preorder the game will receive a free 10-day Beta pass, a bonus item that’s a +1 in-game defense amulet for combat, advanced access days before the game’s official release that will enable name reservation and world choice and a limited edition poster of a red dragon.

For DUNGEONS & DRAGONS fans, this is a great opportunity to become one of the first to play this online game and be a part of the dynamic community that D&D offers," said Jeff Burdeen, vice president for the Hasbro Properties Group.

"This preorder program was designed with the D&D community in mind," said Marc Metis, senior vice president, marketing, Atari, Inc. "By offering fans the opportunity to play the Beta version and gain early access into the completed game, we are giving them the chance to claim bragging rights of experiencing the D&D Online world - before anyone else."
Business Wire

The game, which had more than 250,000 eager players sign up for Beta, is being developed by Turbine and published by Atari. D&D is under license from the Hasbro Properties Group.

The game is expected to launch in North America on Feb. 28 for the Windows XP platform. Preorder boxes can be found at EB Games, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop and more. It will retail for about $50.

Google VideoI missed this little detail from the recent speech Google's co-founder Larry Page gave at the CES 2006; we now have the option to download clips from the Google Video service in a handy, PSP-optimized .mp4 file.

When you find a video you like, just select the PSP option from the drop-down menu beside the download button to save the .mp4 to your computer. You may have to rename the file to something like "M4VXXXXX.MP4", where "XXXXX" is a 5 digit number so the PSP will recognize it when you transfer it over, according to PSPUpdates.

Jake Ludington is running a clever contest for the fifth anniversary of the launch of his website.

He's basically going to reward whoever sends him the most traffic this month with a shiny new Xbox 360 Core System.

To participate, all you have to do is link him up from your site or blog and come top of his list when he tallies up the referals in February.

The winner will have the Core System + 12 month Xbox Live Gold Subscription shipped to them for free, while the second, third, fourth and fifth place sites will all receive a $50 Amazon voucher.

At the moment, the competition is pretty stiff; the top five sites have all sent him at least 160 hits so far (Igniq's at number 8 w/ 104 hits). The faraway winner thus far with 1320 hits is none other than Xbox Live's Major Nelson, who, you know, might already have an Xbox 360.

GamebertJason has informed us of his recent launch of Gamebert.com, a Wikipedia-like site aimed at gamers. Basically anyone with an Internet connection can visit the site and write a gaming article, add to an existing article or fix any inaccuracies they see.
The site runs off the same engine as Wikipedia, so it has the same look-and-feel, but also the same level of edit and customisation features.

Since it only launched recently, there's not much content; Jason hopes to remedy that by getting the word out to gamers who'd like to contribute and join the community.

World of Warcraft
As Blizzard Entertainment basks in the glory of hitting the 5-million player mark for its MMORPG World of Warcraft, players are beginning to complain, and complain loud about logjams getting into the system.

With long waits just to get into the game and problems with server crashes, players are beginning to wonder if WoW has grown too big for its britches.

According to TGDaily.Com, players have had to wait up to 30 minutes just to get into the game. Just like the old-fashion queue system from AOL’s antiquated version of NeverWinter Nights, players in WoW must wait their turn to play their toons and even then there's no guarantee the server will stay up for a good night's worth of gaming.

Blizzard Entertainment so far has not said what exactly is causing these problems. Sources however indicated that a rush of new accounts from the holiday season and newly added content, which requires players to gather massive amounts of materials for an upcoming virtual war, may have overwhelmed the game developer.

Up until a few months ago, players were able to almost instantly log into the game after typing in their username and password. Now many players have to wait from a few minutes to up to 30 minutes to log in. In addition to showing the estimated time till entry, WoW's waiting screen shows the player's place in the queue and players on the Medivh server have recently seen queues of more than 500 players deep.”

Seed robot
Runestone Game Development is now accepting beta testing applications for Seed, its upcoming MMORPG that will debut in April. Beta testing will start Feb. 1.

The online game is a first for Danish-based Runestone, which says its new role-playing venture will be different than anything on the market today. Rather than involve typical RPG combat sequences, Seed will put its emphasis on personal stories and community building.

We’re thrilled about being so near opening Seed to our testers,” said Lars Kroll Kristensen, CEO of Runestone Game Development. “This is the first huge step toward launch, and after years of work we’re all very excited to begin sharing it with thousands of gamers!”

In Seed, players find themselves on an alien world in the far future as desperate human settlers who must work together to ensure the survival of their colony and the whole human race. By using their intellect rather than their brawn, players alone will decide the fate of the entire colony, set within a highly mutable and interactive world.”
Runestone

Players can sign up for beta testing here. The game is expected to go into stress testing in March with an April full launch. The cost will be about 15 Euros a month to play.

American amp specialists Metro Electrics have taken PSP hacking to a new level with a concept car they showcased at the recent CES 2006.

The former '94 Honda Civic was given a funky paint-job, hollowed out and packed with a working electric engine, 24 LCD screens, "more speakers than an Aerosmith concert" and three amps.

They also made it remote-controllable by PSP; with a Wi-Fi connection you can use the handheld to open the doors, switch the lights and even drive the thing down the road:

The price tag? Pocket-lint was told that it was not for sale, however the spokesman said that if it was it would be in the region of around $250,000 (£130,000).

XBox 360
According to GameShout, Direct TV and Microsoft have announced their intentions to team up. Direct TV will soon make its digital television available on the Xbox 360 and also PCs that run Windows.

This partnership will give personal computers the ability to become DVRs, playing and recording Direct TV. The move for the 360 makes it a powerhouse for entertainment, provided customers can actually get their hands on a console. The 360 will now include support for the iPod, HDTV and Direct TV capabilities in addition to its primary function, which is– playing video games - maybe.

As the partnership was announced, shortages of Xbox 360s still plagued the gaming system'’s release. Microsoft has added on a third manufacturer to help with filling orders -– Celestica has joined the mix along with Wistron and Flextronics. During CES 2006, Microsoft announced that up to 5.5 million units would be on the market by July.

With Direct TV, gaming and iPod capabilities, not to mention is nifty doubling as a DVD player, the only question that remains for the Xbox 360 is when developers will be able to get it to do dishes?

Donkey KongaNintendoRevolution.ca has found an interesting Revolution tidbit in a recent issue of the National Geographic Kids Magazine.
The magazine was invited to try out the new console, and the issue features a brief mention of a version of Donkey Konga for the Revolution that will make use of the unique aspects of the controller:

Use two controllers like drum-sticks. Whenever you bring them down, you hear a drum beat or cymbal crash. Other players could get into the groove by shaking controllers like maracas or tambourine.

There has been no official word yet on the game from Nintendo.

BioshockTake Two Interactive, the owners of the Rockstar Games' label, have announced their acquisition of Irrational Games.

As part of the announcement Take-Two revealed Irrational have multiple games in the works at their U.S. and Australian studios, including BioShock, the role-playing FPS for PC and next-generation consoles that has been in development for over 4 years.

Irrational's Ken Levine also revealed the developer is working on more than one next-generation title:

"We are excited to be aligned with a publishing label like 2K Games that shares similar development goals and vision," said Ken Levine, co-founder and President of Irrational Games. "Fans will be blown away when they see the next-generation titles we are working on."

Irrational Games was created by former employees of Looking Glass Studios in the late 1990's, and its previous games include System Shock 2, Freedom Force, Tribes: Vengeance and 2005's SWAT 4.

BioShock is said to be the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2, and is set to be released in 2007.

TO THE EXTREME!!1UP have an entertaining round-up of the ten most idiotic happenings in the world of gaming in 2005.

Included is SOE's "enhancing" of Star Wars: Galaxies, which basically ruined the game according to thousands of players who had already shelled out their hard-earned to play.
The bizarre, gun totin' Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off also gains a special spot; surely one of the most transparent attempts at creating a "hip" character for a tired franchise since Poochie the dog.

The most obvious inclusion is none other than Jack Thompson, though the number one WTF moment goes to the Xbox 360 surprisingly enough...

PlayStation Portable
Not everyone is in love with Sony's guerrilla marketing campaign for its PlayStation Portable consoles. In fact, one New York City Councilman wants them removed and thinks Sony should pay $20,000 toward the city'’s anti-graffiti campaign.

According to UPI, Queens Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. said the ads, which use no words, but depict cartoon characters playing with their PSPs, amount to nothing more than graffiti.

Sony says the ads are legitimate, despite the councilman's concerns. They all appear on buildings where public advertising is allowed by law.

Sony has been using the guerrilla marketing campaign in cities such as New York, Miami and San Francisco to draw new players to its hand-held consoles.

Half-Life 2
According to its official site, Prize Fight, a new online gaming site that will allow players to match their skills against each other in a battle for real cash, is ready to go live Jan. 10.

Hoping to entice players willing to put their money where their mouth is in regard to their video gaming skills, Prize Fight is offering £5 to the first 300 people to sign up.

Prize Fight will enable gamers to play their favorite games for cash prices. The launch is expected to include Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, but developers promise rapid expansion to include not only shooters, but also driving and sports games as well.

Working like a poker site using PC games instead, gamers will pay an entrance fee to play on Prize Fight. This will form the pot available for winners to share. The house, of course, will get its cut of the entry fees.

Those interested can register for free to gain access to a listing of events, which lets them see what games are available at what times. At the launch, Prize Fight will operate between 4 p.m. and midnight. Eventually it will expand to a 24/7 schedule.

The site will use a seeding system to rate players and match them against others of their equivalent skills to enable a more level playing field.

GameCube
Anyone who saves the world on a repeated basis, shouldn'’t have extra luggage in the rear or a spare tire hanging over the front. At least that'’s what ISOCOR thinks.

The company unveiled its Exer-station at the CES 2006 in Las Vegas to give gamers a viable option for exercising while playing their favorite PC, PlayStation, Xbox or GameCube game. The machine works by turning the player'’s movement on screen to force applied to a 24-inch tall joystick.

Using a home-grown technology developed by the company called ISOCOR, the technology allows isometric muscle contractions to control computer and video games.

According to the company behind the device, recent research has indicated that the system can increase metabolic rate five times resting levels and can burn 350 calories per hour.

The controller offers 24 levels so you can build on your performance and the top level is equivalent to Olympic weight lifter hard. ”
Pocket.lint

The machine uses a LCD screen to clock total workout time, calories burned and more. It will cost about $200 when it'’s available later this year.

Who knows, thanks to the Exer-station the next gen of video game players could be as buff as their buddies who spend hours in the gym?
