Advertisements ![]() The upcoming third quarter release of the Korean MMORPG ArchLord will be distributed and operated in the U.S. and Europe by Codemasters. Now in open beta in Korea, the game is being developed by NHN Games. ArchLord offers some unique twists on the typical MMORPG format. The game puts a lot of the control over world shaping in the hands of players and includes some serious PVP for guilds. Once a month, a single player will call the shots in the game world, leveraging power from ancient relics. David Solari, Codemasters Online Gaming director, commented: "ArchLord is an incredibly important signing for Codemasters Online Gaming and NHN has delivered an amazing world and a unique player objective. This incredible feature, where players compete to become the ArchLord and personally shape the game world, has never been seen before in any MMO. It's sure to capture the imaginations of Western gamers and make ArchLord a landmark MMO launch for 2006." ![]() According to Phoney World, SEGA is taking the gaming jump into the cellular phone market to the next level. Rather than just produce games for cell phone users, the game giant has come up with its own phone instead. Dubbed the SA800i, the new SEGA phone will be geared to kids with its bright, kind of hokey colors, but its features make it worth a look for adults, too. Complete with a clamshell design, camera and speaker phone, the SA800i will also come with a lineup of arcade games, too. There’s no word on a release date or all the titles that will come with the phone, but coming from SEGA it’s likely the games will be great for those on the go. It’s hard to imagine a SEGA phone for kids without a hedgehog or three. ![]() The news about possible discrimination against Chinese players, issues with server stability and long entry queues has barely cooled. But that hasn’t stopped Blizzard from making the big announcement that its World of Warcraft has topped 1 million subscribers in Europe. This, according to some sources, brings WoW up to well over the 5 million players worldwide it recently announced. WoW was released in November 2004 on both the PC and Mac platforms, roughly about the time Sony released its EverQuest II. Although WoW’s numbers are impressive, fans of the MMORPG have been complaining in recent weeks about a number of game-related problems, including entry queues that have topped 500 players. News broke earlier this week about Chinese players possibly being discriminated against. It seems players of the game are trying to exclude them from groups, fearing they are only out for money. Blizzard recently banned 1,000 accounts for “gold farming,” although it did not reveal the countries of origin for those players. While it seems there are no MMORPGs without their issues, one can’t help but wonder if Blizzard is allowing quality to overcome quality. Source: Mac World Related: WoW Players Face Discrimination? ![]() According to GameSpot, Nintendo’s president Satoru Iwata said that Americans can expect a Revolution in time for the holidays. Because the company has been so tight-lipped about the upcoming next-gen console’s release, speculation has been that it wouldn’t actually release until 2007. Iwata’s comments to Japanese newspaper Sankei Shinbun nixed that notion. We can't disclose the Revolution's release period yet, but we have no plans to miss out on the year-end sales battle. As for North America, we need to release it by Thanksgiving, or otherwise we won't receive support from the retail industry. So the Revolution will be released prior to that period." ![]() According to The Inquirer, Chinese players of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft are facing a less-than-friendly play environment. As if the plague of problems reported about the game in recent weeks were not enough, now it’s said that Chinese players are being excluded from groups following rumors they’re playing for nothing more than the cash. The Inquirer’s report says that players are asking others to type in English prior to a group invite. If they have spelling or grammar mistakes, the player is rejected. (Which makes wonder how many native speakers are being excluded as well, but that’s another story.) The change in atmosphere follows Blizzard’s permanent banning of more than 1,000 players for gold farming. Although Blizzard has not identified what country the banned accounts originated from, players seem to be taking things into their own hands. This, of course, comes on the heels of reports of major server issues, backups on getting into the game and server crashes. Source: The Inquirer Related: Is 5 Million Too Many For World of Warcraft? ![]() Anyone who doesn’t think a video game can scare you out of your skin, hasn’t played a Resident Evil title. Combining just the right balance of graphics, music, storyline and jump scenes to perfectly meld horror and gaming, the Resident Evil titles have captivated fans for years. Now, as the Next-Gen era comes into play, CVG is speculating that Resident Evil might be brought back for the Nintendo Revolution. According to the site, Minoru Nakai is currently involved in a project for the console at Capcom. Work on the title can help increase his team’s ability to create games for the new system and might pave the way for a new entry in the creepy series. Even if the playability of Resident Evil 4 thus remains very led to my taste", Nakai explained (via Google translator, just in case you're wondering), "we would clearly like to use the potential of the [Revolution controller], because the players could end up wearying themselves of this style of game play.” Despites Nakai’s comments, it seems Capcom has no current plans to bring a Resident Evil 5 title to the Revolution although the company announced its intent to bring such a game to the Xbox 360 and the PS3 at some point. No dates have been announced for either system though. Looks like only time will tell if Resident Evil gets a full resurrection for the new generation of gaming. ![]() GameShout has an interesting piece on a new online support site for “gaming widows.” Found at GamerWidow.com, the site offers forums, humor and more to help those dealing with a loved one’s over indulgent play schedule. While most gamers remember there’s a whole world waiting beyond their computer, some folks have clearly become a little more than wrapped up in MMOGs as evidenced by the need for such sites. Users of the site identify themselves as WoW Widows, EQ Widows and more. A Gamer Widow is a term for those who have a relationship with a Gamer (one who plays video games, be it on a console or on the computer) who pays more attention to the game than to their partner....thereby making their partner a 'gamer widow' (female) or 'gamer widower' (male). In general we say 'gamer widow' and encompass both male and female community members. ![]() According to GamesIndustry, Tecmo will release its next-gen titles on more platforms than just the Xbox 360. Rumors of the single platform commitment were squashed recently by Tecmo’s Yoshimiri Yasuda. Yasuda said that specific titles would be announced "shortly", and though he declined to offer any further details the news is likely to provide a significant boost for Sony as the company prepares to launch its next-generation machine. ![]() According to Reuters, about 600,000 Xbox 360s have been sold in the U.S. since the next-gen console’s launch on Nov. 22, 2005. While interest among buyers has been high, supplies of the gaming unit have been low for a number of reasons. Despite this, Microsoft is holding tight to its projected target to sell between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by June 30, which might prove difficult this year since the availability of Xbox 360s consoles is still low. Complications number two and three are due to hit the market soon as well - both Sony and Nintendo plan on releasing their next-gen consoles this year. The PlayStation 3 is expected to hit the market in the spring while the Nintendo Revolution gaming console is targeted for sometime in the early fall. While the upcoming next-gen releases are not good news for the 360 making its targeted sales, some American retailers (Wal-Mart and Amazon) are starting to have 360 bundles in stock, showing some promise that the logjam to buy the console might ease up soon. It should be an interesting year for gamers as the Big 3 battle it out for market supremacy. ![]() What can be better than tooling around in a racecar that comes equipped with fully automatic weapons? It’s a driver’s dream after all. Come on. Admit it. How many times have you been stuck in traffic wishing you had a hood-mounted machine gun or maybe even a rocket launcher to help you bust your way to the head of the line? SEGA’s upcoming Full Auto release will let you live the dream, on screen of course, as you pit yourself, your racecar and your fully auto weapons in a battle for road supremacy. But, it gets better. Those who preorder the game, which is due to ship in early February, will also receive a limited-edition Xbox 360 faceplate that commemorates the release. Preorders are now being taken by EB Games for a mere $59.99. Not bad considering the hood-mounted machine guns and the faceplate.
