Advertisements A new Xbox 360 that features a HDMI port, a 65nm processor and possibly a 120GB drive is rumored to be in the works, according to a piece in Engadget.Dubbed the “Zephyr,” the new 360 may or may not have the 120 gig drive built in. Important to note on this one is that it is a rumor. Microsoft is not commenting one way or another. However, the need for a larger hard drive is becoming more and more evident – especially with the movie and TV downloads now available on Xbox Live. The HDMI port, too, will help make the 360 more competitive with the PlayStation 3, which could be important in the coming months. If this rumor pans out, it’s likely to be good news to 360 fans, especially with Halo 3 in the pipeline for later this year. Yes, you read that correctly. “Moral Kombat,” not mortal. That’s the title of a full-length documentary that puts a spotlight on video game violence. Directed by Entertainment Consumers Association founder Hal Harpin’s brother, Spencer, the movie includes interviews with those on both sides of the video game debate. Interview subjects include Joe Lieberman, Jack Thompson, Gamer Informer Magazine’s Andy McNamara and more. YouTube has a trailer out on the piece, and it’s getting a fair amount of attention right now. The overall movie is supposed to be a fair look at both sides of the coin, but the trailer does seem a slanted in favor of the anti-game folks. “We are what we pretend to be,” so we ought to be careful what we pretend to be, proclaims one interview subject. I recall pretending to be a gypsy, a witch and a laundry bag during the course of a few Halloweens as a kid. I don’t have wanderlust, a penchant for potions and charms or an overwhelming desire to do laundry. Jokes aside, I’m going to hold out final judgment until the piece is completed, but it will be one to watch. If the slant ends up on the anti-game side, you can believe it will be used as a tool to try and change the hearts and minds of those who logically see games as games. Nods to Game Informer. ![]() Microsoft has come up with a few creative ways to make getting into Halo 3 beta fair for fans. The company will reward actual players for their efforts with a chance to get a beta berth. According to Bungie, Gamers with Halo 2 only have to play the game via Xbox Live for a total of three hours between 12:01 a.m. EST Feb. 1 through 11:59 p.m. Feb. 3. Once three hours are logged, gamers can register at Halo3.com to have a chance to win a spot. The site will take the first 13,333 players to register. Also, gamers who buy Crackdown will get an auto entry into beta. To take part, gamers have to buy the title to activate and download beta when it goes live in the Spring. Sounds like two pretty interesting opportunities to take part in history. I particularly like the cutoff number and the playtime requirement for the mini-marathon of playing. If the writers at the Springfield News-Leader are adept at predicting video game console buying trends, the PlayStation 3 is in trouble. In making their New Year’s in and out list, the folks at Missouri’s News-Leader dubbed the Wii the in console and the PS3 the one on the outs. “With its innovative motion-sensing controller, the latest console from The House That Mario Built is taking the gaming world by storm and could put Nintendo back on top of the gaming biz in 2007,” they wrote. As for their take on the PS3, “Short on positive buzz, the long-dominant PlayStation brand could take a hit in 2007 thanks to the PS3’s shockingly high price tag ($599) and stiffer competition from the Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360.” Their statements are pretty harsh considering both consoles have only been on the block a bit more than a month, but still as it stands today, Wii is taking the world by storm and surprise. Ads for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 have rolled out already in Japan. The timing, however, could be a little off to help Sony in its first leg of the next-gen battle. The game isn’t expected to make its debut for at least another year, maybe two. As Kotaku points out, it’s only fair considering the Halo 3 coverage Microsoft has enjoyed, but in light of the lack of good titles for the PS3 right now, it feels more like salt poured into an open wound for PS3 fans and Final Fantasy fans in particular. Right now the console is reeling from an unexpected surge in interest in Nintendo’s Wii and the 360 is putting a pretty big trouncing on it with the release of Gears of War and the impending expansion of the Halo franchise. Yes, gamers who follow the PS3 know the good titles are coming, but dangling a carrot that far in advance might hurt rather than help sales. Related: Final Fantasy VII For PS3? ![]() One 14-year-old gamer got a little more than he bargained for when he began playing his shiny new copy of Madden NFL 2007 for the Xbox 360 this Christmas. Rather than heart-stopping, bone-crushing gridiron action, the teen got porn on parade. According to a report in Digital Battle, Kolton Mahoney tried to play the game and got a little more than an eyeful. The teen told his parents. After the shock wore off, they notified authorities. The Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force has launched an investigation. It seems the game was purchased from a store and was still sealed at the time of its gifting. How this one will turn out is up in the air, but you can bet a lot of “save the children” types will be “outraged,” “angry” and “up in arms” about the incident. As for the Mahoneys, the just want a decent copy of the EA title. Good for them! Related: Madden ’07 Breaks Its Own Records Jeb Vs. George W. ![]() He’s not saying exactly what’s on the horizon, but in his weekly update that wasn’t supposed to be, Frankie revealed the Bungie team plans a “small pre-beta” program soon. “Bungie will be tapping active members of our worldwide community to help us transition from the ongoing internal alpha multiplayer testing. Our hopes are to call into service experienced and active players of Halo 2 on Xbox Live, along with people who spread Bungie love (in safe, hygienic ways) and foster our community. Unfortunately we won’t be able to include everyone in this but we are hoping for quite a few (think thousands) spots. Once all the specifics are finalized we’ll provide more details on Bungie.net.” He also mentioned more information will be coming from Microsoft in the coming days about the official beta testing, which should start in the Spring. That seems like a long time to wait for some new Master Chief action, but it’s looking like the wait will be well worth it. The freaky video game with an even freakier movie adaptation is getting ready to hit the big screen again. That’s right, Silent Hill 2 is on the drawing board. Christophe Gans has confirmed a SH2 film is in the works – an adaptation that will “correct the mistakes of the first.” The original movie was dark, brilliantly shot and included some of the creepiest creatures I’ve ever seen on the screen, but its storyline left a little to be desired. Sounds like that’s what Gans is seeking to correct in this version. Gans has been quoted as saying Roger Avary will work on the script. Avary’s worked on such scripts as the first SH, “Pulp Fiction” and “Killing Zoe.” There’s also some confusion about whether Neil Gaiman of “Neverwhere” fame will assist in the writing, according to Gamespot. I have to admit, I’m pretty curious about this one. It might just be a DVD flick, but if it’s shot as strangely as the first, it could be more than worth the ride. The new Xbox 360 movie and television download service is clicking along with some reported success. In fact, some think the system’s service is one of the best going. To show users what’s hot and what’s not, the site has now added to its traditional Top 10 lists to include the TV and movie downloads. This week’s lists show what an eclectic bunch of shows and movies Microsoft has managed to get online to date. With offerings that span several decades, the service’s collection is pretty good and it seems to just keep getting better. Granted, it has a long way to go to rival the likes of iTunes, but for a first of its kind, it is impressive. The top movies right now include “Mission Impossible III,” “Nacho Libre,” “V for Vendetta” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” On the TV front, such shows as “South Park,” “Enterprise,” “Jericho” and “Robot Chicken” are found. This is really going to be a great service to watch develop, and what will be even more interesting is to see what, if any, response Sony will have with its PS3.
