DOOM 3 Review by IGNIQ Members

In response to the question:
Is DOOM3 as good as the hype?
IGNIQ members replied:

YES!

I just bought the game this morning, and I love every bit of it. Even the average 4 person multiplayer featuring deathmatch and team deathmatch. It was so fun either way.

Graphically the game is amazing, the sounds are AWESOME, and the wide variety of monsters really keep you at hte edge of your seat. I've only been playing for about 2 hours, I started on the easy setting, then decided I wanted to turn it up a notch so went to medium, and even though I've only come close to dieing once, it's still one hell of a thrill. There've only been a couple seens where I've really "jumped", but the entire game is very tense, and full of suspense......

I've seen a lot of threads on other boards about people who say the game is a waste of money because it isn't what it was supposed to be.

Total bs.

id said they concentrated on single player mode. And the single player is what makes the game. And I even get a kick out of the multiplayer which a lot of people whine about. Another thing is that people say they don't see ragdoll effects 'cause demons dissolve in a fiery "blade" manner. bs once again, you see ragdoll effects whenever you kill just about anything, zombies don't dissolve unless you shoot them with some more bullets after they're dead, you can still watch 'em flip around, fall over eachother, its really nice.

Doom 3 is exactly what it was supposed to be. A thrilling fps.

DOOM III ScreenshotThere are some fine details this game overlooks that caught my attention because I'm a beast for details.

If you play Doom 3 you have to play it on high, with full shadow (no lighting plane you pansies), and you absolutely must have on cast shadows as they will provide some freaky moments in game. One shadow scene that stands out is when you're just leaving an elevator and enter a dim room only lit by the eerie orange glow of the martian dust storm. As you move forward you begin hearing the ambient sounds which so strongly drive up the fear factor then you see a quick shadow cast on the wall as an imp runs across the window catching a glimpse of you.

As for the physics, they're there and they're great; however catching them is hard unless you install a modded pak4 file which removes gibs. Creatures die in extremely lifelike ways, unlike the cool yet cartoony MP2 way where legs and arms go flying.

DOOM III ScreenshotThe sound is awesome and when you have to go through places that are not lit or you just open a door to darkness it is real scary. Especially when you hear the moaning very close to you. I have lost count of the amount of times i've questioned whether or not my heart was up for playing the game. Looks AMAZING. Far Cry was really something, but this just takes it one step further. In the bathrooms looking at the mirrors, the shadows that EVERYTHING reflects, those little robot crawly thingies that help you along the way, the shadows their little legs produce is stunning. So far AMAZING game, you have to play it to realize this. You can only watch so many video clips.....ok i'm rambling.....long story short....get the game....

This gets a 5 from me. 20 odd hours of pants wetting terror. I literally just finished it this morning. It definately has its flaws (what doesn't) but overall an exceptional package. I don't really need to say much about the engine that hasn't already been said , world class grounbreaking blah blah. What did it for me was the sound!! Some truly un-nerving audio in there. Babies crying , women sobbing , assorted moans and groans all make up for an unsettling experience. The storyline actually wasn't too bad either , helped along by some great voice acting.

... DOOM 3 was worth the wait, its managed to prove all my preconceptions wrong (which I gathered from the Beta) like tiny levels, slideshow framerates, 1 monster at a time. instead what I was met with was what has to hailed as a triumph. (or a load of shit as a lot of under spec users may well call it)

Though I would regard the gameplay as fairly Bread & butter in terms of originality, the technology behind the engine keeps you playing through the repetative first few levels, as the game progresses the levels seem to become more and more creative..and creepy.

What I Love!:

1.) Great engine, spectacular lighting though maybe not as advanced as we were led to believe it's nice but for every great effect i have seen so far, I can match it with one the Far Cry Engine has it doesn't....maybe it is the best indoor engine and Far Cry is best out door? Or will Half Life beat them both?

2.) Art. Killer Art design and mapping. The levels go from very functional and realistic looking to just damn scary. Lighting effects are nice, but they work because of the sorts of rooms they are used in. The Art team rules!!!! could not be better!!

3.) Sound. Sound is the scariest part of the game. probably what makes it impossible to play after 15-25 minutes without a breather. The worst part is low level heartbeat, it's not loud enough to sound hokey, and not too subtle I don't hear it. It is so unnerving I keep thinking it really is my heart, and I think my heart starts to sync with it. The little sounds that make up the atmosphere just make this game wonderful. This game was made for my Koss headphones and a dark room.........I rate this games sound as the best EVER DONE!!!!! Perfect!

4.) Story. Yes it's the old Doom story, and we basically already knew it but it's a good story for a game. Convincing voice acting which is no small thing given how badly some have been in prior games.

5.) the PDA.....ok give credit where it is due. They took quite a few pages from System Shock 2 on this one. System Shock 2 was probably the scariest game I played before this one, and they definitely borrowed some ideas, or just came up with the same ones.

6.) Creature animation.....very fluid, really makes them come alive when they first come into the room......(course then they go back to crappy AI)

7.) Overall Game just has a coolness factor that is hard to beat........the game has style.

8.) It scares me to death……I have never played anything scarier….this games fear factor rules! Lovecraft would be proud.

What I HATE!.

1) 2004 engine, and 1990's game controls.....WTF? I can't lean right or left, or go prone.....(not that I would want to go prone really in here but still.....it could be even a neat part of story going through a air duct or something. I never realized how much I use the lean key in games now like Call of Duty, Heat of Battle, Joint Operations etc.....but not being able to lean around corners in a game that really makes me want to is infuriating. I feel like a marine who has had a laminectomy and spinal fusion

2) I can shoot and hold a flashlight in real life, and I am no highly trained marine, what gives? Do they also not have duct tape in the future? Yes I know it’s to make it scary……hey how about draining batteries? Worked for half life…..it’s basically a video game plot hole that makes me feel that much more like my marine if handicapped….mentally in this case.

3) Beat you for taking the Candy level design……..”oh what’s this? Ammo? Health? But what would they be doing in a center of a room under a spotlight? Why is this room covered in closed security panels? Why does my spidey sense tell me to not pick them up? Gee I wonder what will happen?

I swear to god it was annoying in Doom 1 and Doom 2……..I thought the days of beating you for taking the candy were over. This is just plain lazy level design…..I mean every time you see something good just start firing randomly when you take it and you will hit SOMETHING. Oh well it does make it feel like Doom……..I guess ID has to have it’s narcissistic sadist level designers keep the pain alive.

4) Dumb AI. Monsters look awesome and fluid when they come in; very creepy. However then they get back on the “I’m an idiot drone” AI once they come into the room…….BAH! I guess Far Cry spoiled us…but this AI sucks.

5) Okay you do let me zoom in a little to aim…..why not look down the site? It’s an awesome effect in Call of Duty, and Joint Operations…..I would have loved it here….I guess the Dev guys didn’t have time to ad this being that they hurried this game out so fast….*cough*

7) The weapons didn’t seem very accurate……of course I’m no expert on 24th century weapons….but they just don’t feel as good as modern weapons……maybe Pacifist take over awhile, and we have to reinvent how to make decent weapons again….or Maybe the French take over? I dunno…..also wish I could use my weapons for melee too like you really would if something was all over you.

6) I hate there is not more………for all the flaws……….I wish it was 30 times longer…….and I think most of the flaws could be patched or modded easy………..it just tells me something about the Dev teams views for not adding things like leaning when they are in EVERY new game.

Overall: Scary scary game…….best scare I have had from any game since System Shock 2. Lighting is incredible, and the Art team deserves a big BONUS! Simple controls, and beat you for taking the candy level design made me feel like they cared more about a good X-Box port then making this game all it could be. Again it’s incredibly scary though and the best sound ever done. I just hope modders have the tools to fix the annoyances.
