Battlefield 3 gets a release date

The latest news from this year’s E3 is that Battlefield 3 will be hitting store shelves on October 25th of this year.Battlefield 3 coming October 25th

The 3rd instalment in the Battlefield series will be using a new gaming engine, Frostbite 2.0; which will have full support for DirectX 11 and 64-bit processors.

The game was 3 years in development and promises to be a true PC experience, with development set on taking advantage of modern 64-bit CPUs. It will also ship to PS3 and Xbox 360 simultaneously.

Dice is promising to “squeeze every bit” out of the ageing consoles to bring “a stunning looking game on the console”. But make no mistake about it, the PC version is going to be the Mothership as far as Dice and EA are concerned.

You can pre-order a retail copy for PC, Xbox and PS3 from Amazon.

EA raises over 1 million for Japan

EA raises over 1 million for Japan.EA announced that through a series of initiatives and help from various internal studios and gamers it has raised over 1 million dollars to support relief efforts in Japan, after last month’s devastating earthquake. The proceeds will be distributed by the Red Cross, Mercy Corps, and AmeriCare charities.

From the press release:

Electronic Arts Inc., (NASDAQ:ERTS) is pleased to announce that it has raised over $1 Million dollarsfor Japan earthquake and tsunami aid. In the wake of the disaster, EA immediately mobilized internal studios, employees and gamers to join forces and raise relief funds for the people impacted by the disasters. EA implemented giving programs through its titles, fan communities and social gaming platforms, all proceeds of which will be distributed via the Red Cross, Mercy Corps and AmeriCares.

EA are not the only games company to chip in with Japanese aid; Valve, along with the Team Fortress 2 community raised nearly half a million by way of selling hats in the popular online shooter. Meanwhile BioWare’s founders have their own charity auction set up to raise funds; flogging off signed BioWare paraphernalia.

EA to Activision: bring it on! The marketing wars begin

EA wants to win the marketing war against ActivisionIt just goes to show how important advertising is to games publishers. In order that you don’t miss their logo, the next CoD and Battlefield instalments will be spending a staggering $200m on advertising alone. This is according to EA CEO John Riccitiello.

In a speech to the Ad Age Conference Riccitiello explained that the number of worldwide gamers has sky-rocketed from 200 million in the year 2000 to 1.5 billion now. This number will double next year; EA on its own can boast of a 230 million consumer base.

In recognizing the importance of advertising in the current age, Riccitiello praised the massive success of CoD: Black Ops, which made $400 million on day one of sales. The EA CEO actually said to look out for a new war between Activision’s next CoD iteration and EA’s Battlefield 3, comparing it to “Google vs. Microsoft”.

Call of Duty Black Ops is the best-selling game of all-time, according to figures from the NDP. Activision clearly have their priorities in order.

Although Riccitiello is talking up EA and Battlefield this won’t be a war easily won. Either way I hope the publishers can see through the numbers and let the developers make good games, without putting profit ahead of that goal.

Check out the full video presentation here.

Crysis 2 in crisis

Crysis 2Crytek’s luck with Crysis 2 seems to be going from bad to worse. Put aside the fact that the PC game doesn’t support DirectX 11 upon release, and the screen-flickering issues with certain dual-card setups. Now it seems many players can’t even login to play the game.

A long thread has been started over on the Crysis 2 forums full of complaints from people who say their credentials are not being recognised by the ‘MyCrysis’ login screen.

EA announced a fix for a separate issue with regards to serial keys not being recognised, but it is unclear when a fix will be made available for the login problem. Some users have even resorted to changing their emails in order to play the highly anticipated Crytek sequel.

Here’s hoping Crytek and EA put these issues to bed, and we finally get a concrete release date for the DirectX 11 patch.

Nathan Camarillo

In an interview with The Guardian’s Games Blog, Crysis 2′s executive producer Nathan Camarillo thanked fans of the franchise for discouraging (or attempting to) others from acquiring the recent beta that appeared online.

Camarillo talks about how the leak of the game deflated the atmosphere in the Crytek offices, where all the hard work that went into the game was potentially put in jeopardy.

We were really high off the feeling that wow, we’ve got this really awesome game that came together, that we want to play and which will be a lot of fun. Then, getting that kind of news swings your emotions in completely the opposite direction. Our offices are generally really energetic, upbeat and excited but suddenly, everyone was deflated and walking around with their shoulders hunched. We’re normally very communicative at the office, but people just weren’t talking to each other like they normally do – it hit really, really hard. We went through all the phases that you do when you experience a loss – denial, anger and depression. That’s the one that sat in the longest

Despite the presence of an early build on the internet most sites were in solidarity with Crytek in urging people to wait for the finished version. That fellowship with the game’s developers was felt by the Crytek team, as Camarillo describes:

What really got us out of that was our fans and the community, and even people who haven’t been the biggest fans of Crytek, all jumping to our side. They were saying, ‘Don’t download it, don’t post anything from it, don’t participate in file-sharing of this – it’s not the final version, so it’s not what they want you to see. Don’t spoil it for me – I want to see the final version. I’m glad, at least, that it runs on your PC – it runs on my PC as well, but you still shouldn’t have downloaded it.’ Everybody was very supportive, and the community exercised self-policing in that regard, so it didn’t quite erupt like when, for example, a final version is leaked.

Crysis 2 is coming to PC, Xbox and PS3 on March 22nd (US) and fans will be treated to a multiplayer demo on the 1st of March. Steam and Amazon are taking pre-orders of the game.

In-game footage of Battlefield 3 released

Over on the Battlefield blog, EA and dice have released the first trailer for Battlefield 3 with in-game footage. You get a short glimpse of game-play through the eyes of a US marine in Iraqi Kurdistan.

At only 44 seconds long the video is a bit of a tease but the graphics look pretty impressive. Battlefield 3 is of course based on the new Frostbite 2.0 gaming engine.

Also of note is EA’s pre-order incentive. Basically if you pre-order the limited edition now you’ll be eligible to receive the digital expansion pack ‘Back to Karkand’ when it is released. You can also pre-order the game from from Amazon.

This themed multiplayer expansion pack includes four legendary maps from Battlefield 2 boldly re-imagined with Frostbite 2 physics, destruction and visuals. Completing the package are classic Battlefield 2 weapons and vehicles, unique rewards, new achievements/trophies, and more.

With no firm release date set, all we know is that Battlefield 3 is coming to PC, Xbox and PS3 sometime in the Fall.

Crytek urges restraint with leaked Crysis 2 build

Jack Sparrow

Friday brought reports that an unfinished build of Crytek’s upcoming Crysis sequel was leaked to the internet and gone viral across the usual torrent sites. The beta build which weighs in at a hefty 9Gb plus, apparently contains the full single/multiplayer game with a way to circumvent the online authentication.

Crytek must be worried that this is going to somehow damage sales of the game. In a short post on the EA website they urged fans to wait until the finished version is released on March 22nd and not to bother with this early build.

Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites.  Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22.  Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion.  Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community.

I frankly don’t know anybody in their right mind that would download some early, unfinished version of the game from a dodgy torrent site, with the risk of infecting their PCs with a trojan or God knows what else. Not to mention the fact that you ought to buy the game anyway. How can we expect companies to invest all this money into developing a game if every Joe “pinch penny” just goes and downloads it without paying.

You only have to wait a few more weeks and the full, polished game will be there to enjoy. I urge anyone thinking of grabbing it with Utorrent or whatever means to just hang on until March and support Crytek.

Crytek reveal minimum hardware specs for Crysis 2

Crysis 2

Anyone eager to find out if their PC will be up to snuff when it comes to playing the upcoming Crysis 2, may feel their burden lightened by Crytek’s recent announcement about minimum specs.

In 2007 Crysis ate up and spat out most high-end PC rigs. Even today a pretty meaty graphics card is needed to max it out.

This time around however Crytek promised a more forgiving engine. Although the recommended hardware requirements have not been announced, the minimum specs will appeal to anyone with a PC that’s a few year old.

Minimum System Requirements

  • Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2 2GHz or better
  • Nvidia 8800 GT or higher
  • 2 GB RAM
  • Windows XP/Vista/7
  • 9 GB free hard disk space
  • Internet connection

Crysis 2 is hitting store shelves and download slots on the 22nd of March (North America) and Europe 3 days after.
