According to statistics from The NPD Group Nintendo has shipped a staggering 35 million Wii consoles in the US alone. This makes it the fastest console to reach that sales figure. In February alone over 450,000 Wii units were shipped, placing it not far behind the Xbox 360 which clocked in at 535,000 sold.
Someone has already modified Microsoft’s Kinect controller to operate 1985′s NES classic Mario Brothers. Although it doesn’t look easy to play, it might be a great way of shedding those holiday pounds.
25 years ago yesterday, Nintendo launched their Nintendo Entertainment System in the U.S. changing the world of home entertainment forever. What better way to celebrate the NES’s 25th birthday, than a Mario speed-round video. Man can this guy jump..
If you’ve been taken by all the talk of the 25th anniversary of Mario this year, buying one of 5 Mario titles on Amazon will get you a discount off a Wii remote. The remotes usually retail for about $45 but picking up one of the Mario titles below drops the price to $29.99.
The featured games are: Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart Wii Wheel, Mario Party 8, Mario Super Sluggers and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Most everyone who is literate in gaming history knows how important Mario Brothers is, and the impact it had (and continues to have) on the gaming culture. It’s right up there with the wheel, but despite world-wide praise and acceptance, creator Shigeru Miyamoto gets a little red-faced when he sees his 25 year-old creation running today.
“When I see this [Super Mario Bros.] so clearly, it’s a little embarrassing. Back then, with tube televisions, it was a little blurrier and the images weren’t quite so sharp. The places where we tried to fudge it a bit really stand out!
Whenever we work on the re-release of an old game and I feel like something isn’t right, I’ll ask someone, “It wasn’t like this, was it?” but most of the time they tell me, “Yeah, it was like that.”
I personally wouldn’t change a thing. The flaws are part of what made it what it is. Let’s not get all George Lucas about the whole thing.
December 3rd is the day the UK can get their hands on Super Mario All-Stars for the wii. We already knew for some time that Japan was getting it on October 21st but now Nintendo has nailed down a release date for the Brits.
Super Mario All-Stars is essentially a re-packaging of the classic Mario bundle from the SNES console. The shiny red box also includes a soundtrack with music from all the games, plus a special booklet with unseen artwork and development materials. It’s a retro junkies heroin fix if ever there was one. This long-time Mario devotee is drooling over the keyboard just looking at the box art.
There’s no doubt about it, this will be a much sought after stocking filler this Christmas.
In other Nintendo news, a new Mario-themed wii has also been announced. Continuing with the Mario Anniversary celebrations like a late-night stag party that just won’t quit, Nintendo will be unleashing a shiny new red wii with matching wii-mote.
The console will come bundled with the classic Mario Brothers NES game, but with a few twists. For one, the coin blocks have the number 25 in them. Japan will see the anniversary edition wii hit the shelves on November 11th, with a rest-of-the-world date to be announced.
Nintendo America are encouraging users on Twitter to download the new Mario Brothers Anniversary logo to use on their public profile when tweeting.
Today is the day folks, Mario debuted in Japan on the NES console a quarter of a century ago. It’s hard to believe. I’ll never forget the day my Dad drove me out to a friend of a friend of a friend, to pick up a second-hand NES console for my Christmas present. The console came with Duck-Hunt and Mario Brothers. That was probably the most awesome-est gift I ever got. Nothing has come close since, even the wii and my Blu Ray home cinema system.
According to andriasang.com Nintendo have confirmed an upcoming Mario pack for the wii entitled “Super Mario Collection Special Pack”. Many have speculated that this will be a re-release of Mario All-Stars on the wii console, with updated graphics and such. As a life-long Nintendo/Mario fanboy this will be a veritable dream come true, if true.
There’s still no official word from Nintendo though, but we’ll keep you posted on any developments.
According to the latest data from Nintendo, a milestone has been reached in American Wii sales. Our Yankee counterparts have parted with cash to the tune of 30 million Wii units. A standard Wii from Amazon costs $200 US Dollars. A five-year old could do the maths on that one. Someone fetch a five-year old!
Also released by Nintendo in celebration of the impressive figures, was the top-ten best selling Nintendo-published/third party games. Not surprising, Mario Kart and New Super Mario have made the list along with Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Party 8.
