The sequel to Call of Juarez, ‘The Cartel’ is under extreme pressure from Mexican state legislators who are seeking a ban on the game. The gun-slinging shooter deals with the drug cartels and violence in the City of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, where 6,000 people died in the last 2 years alone because of the unrest and drug problems
But local politicians and law enforcement see the game as a possible bad influence on children living there. Congressman Ricardo Boone Salmon voiced his concerns that the game will glorify what is going on and lead kids to grow up with a “lack of values.”
It is true there is a serious crime situation, which we are not trying to hide. But we also should not expose children to this kind of scenarios so that they are going to grow up with this kind of image and lack of values.
Children wind up being easily involved in criminal acts over time, because among other things, during their childhood not enough care has been taken about what they see on television and playing video games,” Serrano said. “They believe so much blood and death is normal.
The game is due out this Summer, but if people like Salmon get their way a Mexican release may be delayed indefinitely. But I do feel it a pointless endeavour by the Mexican officials. When children hear this game is banned (if that is what transpires) they will just grab a copy online out of curiosity. So in effect this will be leading them to piracy.
Online retailer Amazon is taking pre-orders on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the controversial game.
